Low-cost retailers like Dollar General face stiff competition from bigger retailers like Walmart in the grocery and food business, which has lifted its annual outlook as it offers lower prices on groceries compared to rivals Target Corp (TGT.N). Shares of Dollar General were set for their worst day on record, if losses hold, as it also said an earnings decline would be "most significant" in the second quarter. The Tennessee-based company's gloomy outlook echoes disappointing results at its biggest rival Dollar Tree (DLTR.O) last week, which took a hit from slowing demand for non-essentials and elevated cost pressures. The company's first-quarter same-store sales and profit were also below analysts' average estimate as customers appeared to have reduced their spending budgets. New York CNN Business —Family Dollar has lost ground in the dollar store race for years. “Family Dollar, from a pricing perspective, is in the best position in more than a decade.”The strategy appears to be working so far: Last quarter, foot traffic to Family Dollar stores increased for the first time in three years. Dollar Tree bought Family Dollar in 2014 for almost $9 billion, but these problems started before the acquisition, according to analysts. Some Wall Street investors have pressed Dollar Tree to sell Family Dollar. And new “H2” Family Dollar stores showcasing special Dollar Tree $1.25 merchandise sections and more freezers and refrigerators than traditional Family Dollar stores.
The increased footfall from discount-hunting shoppers helped the company lift its annual sales outlook and post a strong third quarter. An increase in prices at Dollar Tree banner stores to $1.25 from the traditional $1 supported margins during the period, but company executives said the lack of flexibility to adjust prices could lead to margin pressures in the short term. The price cuts, however, helped Family Dollar post its strongest quarterly same-store sales jump since 2020 and grow quarterly traffic for the first time in three years. Dollar Tree now expects annual per-share profit at the lower half of its previously estimated range of $7.10 to $7.40. The company raised its forecast for full-year net sales to between $28.14 billion and $28.28 billion, from $27.85 billion to $28.10 billion earlier.
Now is the time to buy into shares of Kroger, according to Evercore ISI. The firm on Wednesday upgraded the grocery chain to outperform from in-line and raised its price target to $56 from $49. He also sees further potential for upside when the merger between Kroger and Albertsons is completed, adding fuel to his bull case for the stock. Albertsons merger boost The planned merger with Albertsons could add a nice kicker to Kroger shares at the end of the year. If the merger doesn't go as smoothly as hoped or price cuts hurt Kroger's sales, the upside that Evercore sees could fizzle.
