The survey shows 84% of the 27 respondents, including economists, fund managers and strategists, see the Fed cutting by a quarter percentage point, with 16% seeing a half-point decrease. That compares with 65% probability of a half-point cut now priced into fed futures markets. "That forecast is more in line with a hard landing than a soft landing." (One basis point equals 0.01%)Soft landing expectedThe major difference could be that survey respondents appear less worried about the economy overall than futures markets, and more convinced the Fed has time to enact gradual rate cuts. Seventy-four percent said the September rate cut comes in time to preserve a soft landing, with just 15% saying it's too late.

CNN —Four ISIS leaders were killed as a result of raid in western Iraq late last month, the US military said Friday. US Central Command identified the four leaders as Ahmad Hamid Husayn Abd-al-Jalil al-Ithawi, who was responsible for all ISIS operations in Iraq; Abu Hammam, who oversaw all operations in the western part of the country; Abu-‘Ali al-Tunisi, who oversaw technical development, and Shakir Abud Ahmad al-Issawi, who was responsible for military operations in western Iraq. The US, in partnership with Iraqi security forces, conducted a raid in western Iraq on August 29, killing more than a dozen ISIS operatives who were “armed with numerous weapons, grenades, and explosive ‘suicide’ belts,” CENTCOM previously said. Amid the heightened tensions in the Middle East, Iraq has postponed announcing an end-date for the US-led military coalition’s presence in the country, CNN previously reported. CNN’s Philip Wang, Haley Britzky, Mary Kay Mallonee, Hamdi Alkhshali, Sam Fossum and Mohammed Tawfeeq contributed to this report.

Since Harris replaced President Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee, Trump has constantly attempted to portray her as weak on immigration and crime. On Friday, Harris also chose not to mention mass deportation during a radio interview with Univision, when the host asked her to summarize her argument to undecided Hispanic voters. “There is a way in which those [crime and immigration] issues in particular are also about bigger things,” said Adrianne Shropshire, executive director of BlackPAC, a group working to mobilize Black voters for Harris and Democrats. And many of those voters might recoil from these Trump policies on crime and immigration if they heard more about them. “What he is hoping is that the Black voters who he is [courting] don’t see that stuff,” Shropshire said.

More specifically, they're taking aim at a widespread rule that requires almost every new apartment building in the US to include at least two separate stairwells. This part of local codes, they say, is an outdated safety measure that really just makes apartment units smaller, more expensive, and darker (yes, darker). City planners there sometimes call these single-stair buildings "Seattle Specials" — they simply wouldn't be possible in pretty much any other city. Almost all of Europe, as well as Asia, Mexico and South America, allows single-stair buildings of six stories or higher. Germany allows single-stair buildings to stretch to about 20 stories, while Switzerland has no such limit.

The Justice Department’s in-house watchdog found no evidence of political interference in the reduction of a prison sentence proposed for the longtime Trump ally Roger Stone in 2020, attributing the stunning reversal to “ineffectual” leadership, according to a report released on Wednesday. The report concluded a four-year investigation into the decision by Attorney General William P. Barr in February 2020 to reduce Mr. Stone’s proposed sentence to about three years, after initially recommending seven to nine. The episode incited accusations of political interference and prompted four prosecutors in the case to resign. He denounced the sentencing recommendation as a “miscarriage of justice.”But the inspector general, Michael E. Horowitz, concluded that Mr. Barr had argued that the more stringent sentence was unreasonably harsh before Mr. Trump expressed those sentiments. Mr. Barr was blindsided by a subordinate who had led him to believe the department would request a lesser prison term, Mr. Horowitz wrote.

The meter at your home or apartment recording your electricity consumption is one of the portals to a clean energy future — and to consumers spending considerably less on their power bills. But to get to that future, those meters must be able to provide up-to-the-minute data to you, your utility company, the plug-in devices in your home and the growing array of businesses that can analyze the data and help you save on your electricity bills. For that to happen, though, your energy data must be available in a standard format. The Biden administration had the chance to accelerate that transition last fall when it awarded a little more than $1 billion in “smart grid grants” to nearly three dozen electric utilities to improve the efficiency of the power grid. As a condition of the grants, the Energy Department should have required those utilities to provide electric meter data in a “portable” format so the information could move easily among different software applications, platforms and services.

Ancient relative of the great white sharkMost species of Ptychodus lived between 100 and 80 million years ago during the late Cretaceous period. Because shark skeletons are made of cartilage, they do not fossilize well, typically leaving archaeologists only teeth and few skeletal remains to find. Lamniformes also includes the modern species of megamouth, sand, goblin and basking sharks, among others. “The crushing teeth together with the gigantic size make Ptychodus a very unique shark,” Amadori said. … Modern durophagous sharks (that consume hard-shelled organisms) are demersal, feeding on or near the bottom.

It’s unclear how far along the talks between IAC and National Amusements are. A bid to take control of Paramount would be a coda of sorts for Mr. Diller, 82, who tried to acquire Paramount Pictures in the early ’90s. Mr. Diller was named head of Paramount Pictures in 1974 at the age of 32. After Mr. Redstone outbid him for the company, Mr. Diller set his sights on continuing to build his new media empire, striking a series of audacious deals to expand IAC. “They won,” Mr. Diller said in a statement after losing out to Mr. Redstone.

Several stocks are well-positioned to benefit from any power supply bottlenecks resulting from rapid growth in data centers, according to 11 analysts at TD Cowen who compiled a 169-page report. As a result, they're building data centers where power is available, investing in transmission lines and exploring the use of nuclear energy . Brookfield Renewable Partners , an international renewable power producer and developer, is another beneficiary of the data center boom. "The recently signed framework agreement... is a clear example of BEP's exposure to corporate [power purchase agreement] momentum associated with data center demand. The United States dispatched its top military commander for the Middle East to Israel on Thursday, after President Biden stated that, despite recent friction, American support for Israel “is ironclad” in the event of an attack by Iran. Iran’s leaders have repeatedly vowed to punish Israel for an April 1 strike in Syria that killed several senior Iranian commanders. Israel has put its military on alert, and Mr. Biden said on Wednesday that Iran was threatening a “significant” attack. Gen. Michael E. Kurilla, the American commander, will coordinate with Israel on what is widely expected to be imminent retaliatory action by Iran and will also discuss the war against Hamas in Gaza and humanitarian aid operations there, according to officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel acknowledged on Thursday that Israel was facing “challenging times,” noting that “in the midst of the war in Gaza” his country was “also prepared for scenarios involving challenges in other sectors.”

Two competing slates of board seats are now up for a vote against Disney’s. Peltz has criticized Disney’s recent theatrical flops and said the company should reach “Netflix-like margins” with its Disney+ streaming service, among other issues. If Peltz is successful, he and Rasulo could gain up to two seats on the board, displacing Disney’s picks. More than 35% of Disney’s shares are held by these individuals, who could seriously sway the vote. The influential advisory firms Institutional Shareholder Service and Egan-Jones have also thrown their support behind Peltz for at least one seat on the board.

The group got a dramatic second wind soon after the Taliban toppled the Afghan government that year. The attack raised ISIS-K’s international profile, positioning it as a major threat to the Taliban’s ability to govern. Counterterrorism officials in Europe say that in recent months they have snuffed out several nascent ISIS-K plots to attack targets there. Niger said it is revoking its military cooperation deal with the United States, ordering 1,000 American armed forces personnel to leave the country and throwing the United States’ strategy in the region into disarray. The announcement by the West African nation’s military junta on Saturday came after meetings last week with a delegation from Washington and the top U.S. commander for Africa, Gen. Michael E. Langley. The move is in keeping with a recent pattern by countries in the Sahel region, an arid area south of the Sahara, of breaking ties with Western countries. American officials also voiced alarm in the meetings about several other issues, including whether Niger’s military government was nearing a deal to give Iran access to Niger’s vast uranium reserves, a concern that was reported earlier by The Wall Street Journal. Niger’s rejection of military ties with the United States follows the withdrawal from Niger of troops from France, the former colonial power that, for the past decade, has led foreign counterterrorism efforts against jihadist groups in West Africa, but which has lately been perceived as a pariah in the region.

Dozens of inmates, including the disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein, have died needlessly in federal prisons as a result of lax supervision, access to contraband and poor monitoring of at-risk inmates, according to a report released on Thursday by the Justice Department’s watchdog. The Bureau of Prisons, responsible for about 155,000 inmates, routinely subjects prisoners to conditions that put them at heightened risk of self-harm, drug overdoses, accidents and violence, the department’s inspector general found after analyzing 344 deaths from 2013 to 2021 that had not been caused by illnesses. More than half of those deaths were suicides, and many of them could have been prevented if inmates had received appropriate mental health assessments or been housed with other prisoners in accordance with departmental guidelines instead of being left alone, like Mr. Epstein, the report concluded. The report “identified several operational and managerial deficiencies” that violated standing bureau policies, said Michael E. Horowitz, the inspector general, whose investigators previously concluded that Mr. Epstein’s death at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in 2019 was the result of gross negligence and inadequate staffing.

The participants had their blood pressure monitored for a day before beginning treatment and again after nine months of weekly tirzepatide injections. The results showed a significant decrease in the participants’ systolic blood pressure, the top number in blood pressure readings, which is a strong predictor of heart disease. It works similarly to semaglutide, the active compound in the weight loss drug Wegovy and its sister diabetes drug, Ozempic. Although there are effective blood pressure medications available, only about a quarter of people with hypertension have adequately controlled blood pressure, Hall said. He views the weight loss effect of the drug as a pleasant side effect that will make people more likely to take their medication.
