New York CNN —For the past two decades, the United States imported more goods from China than all other nations. Mexico is now the top exporter of goods into the US, according to new trade data released by the Commerce Department on Wednesday. Mexico sent $475.6 billion worth of goods into the US last year, a 5% increase from 2022. China, meanwhile, exported $427.2 billion worth of goods to the US last year, a 20% slump from 2022. That’s the largest annual decline in the trade deficit since 2009.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — The Mexican government sent 25,000 troops to Acapulco after the resort was hit by Hurricane Otis on Oct. 25, but apparently that hasn’t stopped the violence this week. The main Acapulco business chamber reported that gang threats and attacks have caused about 90% of the city’s passenger vans to stop running, affecting the resort’s main form of transport. The chamber said the violence was forcing businesses to close early on Thursday and Friday. The government has pledged to build about three dozen barracks for the quasi-military National Guard in Acapulco. But even with throngs of troops now on the streets, the drug gang violence that has beset Acapulco for almost two decades appears to have continued.

JUCHITAN, Mexico, Mexico, Oct 2 (Reuters) - Several hundred migrants in southern Mexico awaited buses north on Monday under a new government program meant to help manage the numbers arriving, as Mexico's president said 10,000 people have been reaching the northern border with the U.S. daily. Thousands of migrants have crossed into the U.S. from Mexico in recent weeks, alarming officials in U.S. border cities and prompting delays to trade. Salma was among about 400 people, including families with small children, awaiting buses headed to the state capital or Mexico City. In September, the number of migrants encountered at the U.S.-Mexico border was on pace to approach, or surpass, previous monthly highs. Lopez Obrador called for countries to address root causes driving migration and lamented the deaths of 10 Cuban migrants in a traffic accident in southern Mexico on Sunday.

Michelle Lujan Grisham's emergency order suspending the right to carry firearms in public in and around Albuquerque drew an immediate court challenge from a gun-rights group Saturday, as legal scholars and advocates said they expected. The governor, a Democrat, said the 30-day suspension, enacted as an emergency public health measure, would apply in most public places, from city sidewalks to parks. The top Republican in the New Mexico Senate, Greg Baca of Belen, also denounced Lujan Grisham’s order as an infringement on the gun rights of law-abiding citizens. Levinson said she was not aware of any other governor taking a step as restrictive as Lujan Grisham. “I don’t think it will be a political loss for (Lujan Grisham) to be overturned,” Levinson said.

Pena, who lost his race for the New Mexico state House, was arrested Monday in connection with a string of shootings at the homes of state and local Democratic leaders, police said. Police in Albuquerque on Monday announced the arrest of a failed candidate for state Legislature in a string of shootings at locations associated with high-profile Democratic leaders. Republican Solomon Peña is accused of conspiring with and paying four men to carry out four shootings at the homes of two Bernalillo County commissioners and two state legislators. But on Monday, Albuquerque Police Chief Harold Medina described Peña as the initiator of the shootings. Ballistics evidence from one of the shootings connected the case to the suspect, Medina said. The Albuquerque Journal describes the suspect as unsuccessful candidate for New Mexico House District 14, which represents the Albuquerque area's South Valley.

A suspect was in custody Monday in a string of shootings that may have targeted Democratic leaders in Albuquerque, officials said Monday. "Those elected officials deserve to be able to do their jobs as part of American democracy without fear, and especially without fear in their homes." Last week, after the other shootings were widely reported, Martinez asked officers to investigate the incident, police said. The Democratic Party of New Mexico said in a statement it is "deeply troubled" by the shootings. "I share the anger of my fellow elected officials and all those who have been targeted by such senseless acts of violence," he said.
