Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta Platforms Inc., arrives for the Meta Connect event in Menlo Park, California, on Sept. 25, 2024. Meta has been so quick to build out its massive data center and computing infrastructure for artificial intelligence projects that CEO Mark Zuckerberg is even a bit surprised. In a call with analysts on Wednesday after Meta's third-quarter earnings report, Zuckerberg explained to investors how Meta's rising costs for the year are tied to the speed at which employees are able to get data centers, servers and chips for AI up and running. Meta raised the low end of its capital expenditures guidance for 2024 to $38 billion from $37 billion. "That execution makes me somewhat more optimistic that we're going to be able to keep on building this out at a good pace."

Brands have turned away from relying solely on Meta and are using many different platforms to acquire new customers, including relatively new channels like TikTok. Measured's data shows that Snap is the cheapest channel for brands to acquire customers. On TikTok, it costs brands $139.58 to acquire a customer, while Meta nets out to $83.16. Forty-seven percent of advertisers bought TikTok ads, and 5% of brands invested in Reddit ads to find customers. Washington CNN —Meta will now remove posts containing the term “Zionist” when used in conjunction with antisemitic tropes or dehumanizing rhetoric, the company said Tuesday, in an expansion of its current hate speech policies. The decision follows what the company described as a months-long inquiry into how the term has historically been used and how it is currently being used on social media, particularly as the war in Gaza continues. “We have determined that the existing policy guidance does not sufficiently address the ways people are using the term ‘Zionist’ online and offline,” Meta said in a blog post. Meta said it met with more than 145 historians, civil rights groups, legal and human rights experts, and free speech advocates from around the world in reaching its decision. The company said it also asked its quasi-judicial oversight board to issue guidance on how it should moderate posts that accuse groups labeled with “proxy terms for nationality (including Zionists)” of war crimes.

New York CNN —Meta’s Oversight Board is set to evaluate the company’s handling of deepfake pornography amid growing concerns that artificial intelligence is fueling a rise in the creation of fake, explicit imagery as a form of harassment. “Deepfake pornography is a growing cause of gender-based harassment online and is increasingly used to target, silence and intimidate women – both on and offline,” Meta Oversight Board Co-Chair Helle Thorning-Schmidt said in a statement. The board makes recommendations to the company about how to handle certain content moderation decisions, as well as broader policy suggestions. The second case involves an AI-generated image of a nude woman being groped, which was posted to a Facebook group for AI creations. As part of this latest review, the Oversight Board is seeking public comments — which can be submitted anonymously — about deepfake pornography, including how such content can harm women and how Meta has responded to posts featuring AI-generated explicit imagery.

Meta 's social media platforms Instagram, Facebook and Threads were down for many users Tuesday morning. Facebook and Threads seem to be particularly impacted. Instagram feeds aren't refreshing for some users, while others are still able to access the app. The service disruption follows a major outage in 2021, when Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp were down for more than six hours. At the time, Facebook, now Meta, said the outage was caused by "configuration changes on backbone routers."

To use precise consumer data, advertisers now must work directly with the company that owns that data — like the retailer that knows what its customers bought or the media company that knows what its audience watched. Streamers including Netflix are building new ad businesses, while platforms like YouTube are trying to bolster their existing ad businesses with more content, such as live sports. "In a world of less data or worse data, whoever has the least-bad data wins," Brian Wieser, an advertising-industry analyst, told Business Insider. Even companies that aren't traditional retailers, such as Uber and Marriott, have kick-started ad businesses. The pandemic pushed the world to embrace streaming services.
