CNN —Former Italy and Juventus striker Salvatore “Totò” Schillaci, who was the top scorer at the 1990 World Cup on home soil, has died at the age of 59, his former club announced in a statement on Wednesday. “Salvatore Schillaci, known by everyone as Totò, the striker from the magic nights of Italia ’90 with our national team. In the aftermath of the World Cup, Schillaci would go on to score only once more for his country, a goal in a 2-1 defeat to Norway the following year in a qualifier for the 1992 UEFA European Championships. At least eight people died during a failed attempt to cross the English Channel from northern France, French maritime authorities said Sunday. Once the vessel reached the beach, rescue services offered medical assistance to 53 migrants, a statement from the French maritime authorities in charge of the Channel and the North Sea said. Before Saturday’s accident, at least 43 migrants had died or gone missing while trying to cross to the U.K. this year, according to the International Organization for Migration. Other surveillance and rescue operations are underway Sunday along the entire Pas-de-Calais coast amid stormy weather conditions and agitated sea, French maritime authorities said. In July, four migrants died while attempting the crossing on an inflatable boat that capsized and punctured.

Rome CNN —Hundreds of posters have appeared on billboards across Italy this summer, bearing the slogan: “Russia is not our enemy” and depicting a handshake in the colors of the Italian and Russian flags. In Rome, the posters drew ire from the mayor’s office because they featured both the city’s name and its official symbol. In a decree to local police and the advertising company that owns the billboards in Rome, it ordered the removal of all posters. Earlier this month, they met at the European House’s Ambrosetti Forum in Cernobbio, northern Italy. The Russian propaganda posters have not caused notable outcry among the Italian public, in part because they started appearing during the summer months, when most Italians take their vacations.

One of the two female boxers at the center of an Olympic gender controversy pleaded with the public to “avoid bullying all athletes” Sunday night. The association alleged that the women failed to pass unspecified gender tests that found they had male chromosomes. The International Boxing Association, whose president is Umar Kremlev of Russia, reportedly an acquaintance of President Vladimir Putin, has had its legitimacy scrutinized in recent years. (In Olympic boxing, there are no third-place matches, so two bronze medals are awarded to the semifinal losers.) Khelif also clinched an Olympic medal Saturday after defeating Hungarian Anna Luca Hamori in a unanimous decision.

They were allowed to compete in Paris by the IOC task force, which has run the past two Olympic boxing tournaments. Olympic boxing reached gender parity for the first time this year, with 124 men and 124 women competing in Paris. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni vowed on Sunday to "relaunch" cooperation with China, signing a three-year action plan during her first official visit to Beijing since taking office. The Italian leader said her five-day trip was a "demonstration of the will to begin a new phase, to relaunch our bilateral cooperation." Later in the day Meloni said that an industrial cooperation memorandum signed by Italy and China includes strategic industrial sectors such as electric mobility and renewables. Meloni, who sees Chinese investment as a way to spur Italy's anemic economic growth, will meet Xi and China's top legislator, Zhao Leji, third in the leadership hierarchy. Meloni is expected to raise Chinese overcapacity with Chinese officials, as well as Chinese economic support for Russia in its war with Ukraine.

Is 100 Days Enough Time to Pick a Leader? But in many other democracies, an official election period sets out when candidates can debate, make speeches and run political ads (often with strict spending limits). “We know from other countries that 100 days is plenty of time for a healthy campaign,” said Mr. Tama. “Most campaigns in different countries are in the range of a few weeks to several months.”Even in India, the largest democracy in the world, the official campaign only starts a little over a month before voting begins. And in India in 2014, Narendra Modi had six months after his party chose him as leader to wage his successful campaign for prime minister.

Rome CNN —Two people were killed and at least 13 injured Tuesday when an elevated walkway collapsed in a condemned Italian slum notorious for its links to organized criminal groups. The Italian Fire Brigade said a 29-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman were killed in the collapse at the Le Vele housing slum in the Neapolitan suburb of Scampia. More than 800 people were living as squatters in the apartment complex at the time, including 300 children, according to the fire brigade. The housing complex, built in the 1970s and 1980s, originally consisted of four apartment buildings shaped like sails (“vele”) joined by elevated walkways. After the order to clear the complex in 2020, the local municipality launched a redevelopment project to house those still living at La Vele.

Rome Reuters —A Milan court has ordered a journalist to pay Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni damages of €5,000 (around $5,400) for making fun of her in a social media post, news agency ANSA and other local media reported. I can’t even see you.”Meloni’s height is given as between 1.58 meters (5 feet 2 inches) and 1.63 meters (5 feet 4 inches) on various media websites. Cortese can appeal against the sentence, and Meloni’s lawyer said the prime minister would donate to charity any damages she eventually receives. Writing in English on X on Thursday, Cortese said it was a tough time for independent journalists in Italy. Last year, a Rome court fined best-selling author Roberto Saviano €1,000 ($1,088) plus legal expenses after he insulted her on television in 2021 over her hardline stance on illegal immigration.

A judge in Milan has found an Italian journalist guilty of defaming Italy’s prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, and ordered her to pay damages of 5,000 euros, or about $5,500, as well as court costs, the defendant’s lawyer said. In one tweet, she described Ms. Meloni using “not nice words,” Ms. Cortese’s lawyer, David Olivetti, said. In another she took aim at Ms. Meloni’s height, suggesting Ms. Meloni was 1.2 meters, or about 4 feet, tall. The prosecutor trying Ms. Cortese had called it an example of body shaming. (At a campaign rally in 2022, Ms. Meloni told supporters she was 1.58 meters tall, or 5 feet 2 inches).

Some of the proposals squarely take aim at the country's private equity sector, which, despite Britain's exit from the European Union, has maintained its stature as the regional hub for deal-making. "Private equity is the only industry where performance-related pay is treated as capital gains," the manifesto says. In practice, that would mean taxing carried interest, or the profits paid to private equity and hedge fund managers, as income. Labour's ascent comes at a precarious time for the private equity sector more broadly. "London has been the pulpit for financial services, private equity and investors in Europe for a long time," said Mark Veldon, a private equity partner at financial advisory and global consulting firm AlixPartners.

French President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist alliance was crushed on Sunday after the far-right National Rally (RN) party surged in the first round of the country’s parliamentary elections. It would then become the first far-right party to enter the French government since World War II – although nothing is certain ahead of Sunday’s second round. “Tonight is not a night like any other,” Prime Minister Gabriel Attal said solemnly in an address to the French. The left-wing New Popular Front has announced that it will withdraw all candidates who came in third to help prevent far-right candidates from getting elected. How Steve Bannon Sees the Future - The New York Times
  + stars: | 2024-07-01 | by ( David Brooks | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
I was sitting in Steve Bannon’s Washington living room in 2019. By then populists had already racked up some big wins — Brexit in Britain, Trump’s victory in 2016. Bannon knew I opposed him in every particular and abhorred much of what he said, but he laid out his grand vision cheerfully, confidently. I found Bannon, currently the host of the podcast “War Room,” to be embroiled and embattled as usual. I should emphasize that I wasn’t trying to debate Bannon or rebut his beliefs; I wanted to understand how he sees the current moment.

EU leaders pick von der Leyen for second term as Commission chief
  + stars: | 2024-06-28 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
European Union leaders agreed to nominate Ursula von der Leyen of Germany for a second five-year term as president of the European Commission, the EU's powerful executive body. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, another right-winger, voted against von der Leyen and did not vote for Kallas, diplomats said. Von der Leyen's nomination still needs approval from the European Parliament in a secret ballot - widely seen as a trickier proposition than her endorsement by EU leaders. "It is a matter of convincing - if possible - a broad majority for a strong Europe," von der Leyen said. Von der Leyen hails from the centre-right, Costa from the centre-left and Kallas from Europe's liberal group.
