Police say they suspect that the drones were used by Kuki militants, a claim denied by Kuki groups. Protesters threw stones and plastic bottles in front of the main gate of the state governor’s residence, police said in a statement. As protests spilled over into Tuesday, the local government imposed a curfew in the Imphal Valley and surrounding districts and suspended internet services in five valley districts. Authorities shut down the internet in Manipur last year, in one of India’s longest enforced outages.

About 400 people stormed the district police chief's office at around 7.30 p.m. (1400 GMT), demanding the order be revoked. The official said about 25 people were injured, and were being treated in hospital. The Indigenous Tribal Leaders' Forum (ITLF), an apex tribal body, warned district police chief Shivanand Surve, who had issued the suspension order, to leave Churachandpur within the next 24 hours.

He added that the situation was "extremely tense" after armed mobs vandalised an office of the ruling political party and hurled petrol bombs at two police sites. Protests re-ignited over the alleged kidnapping and killing of two students of the Meitei community who had gone missing in July, after their bodies were found this week. Leaders of the opposition Congress party have accused the Modi government of failing to control the violence in a state governed by his nationalist party.

Kukis say a loosely formed group of Meitei women, known as Meira Paibis, or Women Torchbearers, is responsible for instigating some of the rapes of women of the minority community. India's Supreme Court announced this week that it will monitor investigations into cases of sexual violence in the state. "Meira Paibis does not differentiate between Kuki or Meitei," she said, speaking alongside a group of other Meitei women. CNN —A graphic video emerged on social media Wednesday from Manipur amidst ongoing ethnic violence in the northeastern Indian state. The video, which is going viral on social media, depicts an incident from May 4, according to the Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF) showing two women being forced to walk naked through a crowd of fully clothed men. The distressing video, that has been seen by CNN, shows the terrified victims surrounded by a mob of men, many brandishing long canes or sticks as weapons.
