CNN —Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is considering a plan to force all Palestinian civilians out of northern Gaza, including Gaza City, in order to lay siege to Hamas and force the release of hostages. The plan does not mention whether, when, or how civilians would be allowed to return to northern Gaza. The idea comes from a group of retired Israeli military generals, who have formally presented it to the Israeli cabinet and a powerful parliamentary committee. “The right thing to do is to inform the approximately 300,000 residents who remained in the northern Gaza Strip, citizen residents, of the following: Not that we are suggesting you leave the northern Gaza Strip, we are ordering you to leave the northern Gaza Strip.”“In a week, the entire territory of the northern Gaza Strip will become military territory. The plan does not tackle the question of whether Palestinians could ever return to northern Gaza, one of its backers told CNN.

WHO Chief Breaks Down Describing 'Hellish' Gaza Conditions

GENEVA (Reuters) - The head of the World Health Organization called for a ceasefire and a "true solution" to the Israel-Palestinian conflict in an emotional plea to the global health body's governing body on Thursday where he described conditions in Gaza as "hellish". "I'm a true believer because of my own experience that war doesn't bring solution, except more war, more hatred, more agony, more destruction. So let's choose peace and resolve this issue politically," Tedros told the WHO Executive Board in Geneva during a discussion about the Gaza health emergency. In the same address, Tedros warned that more people in Gaza would die of starvation and disease. "If you add all that, I think it's not easy to understand how hellish the situation is," he said.

REUTERS/Ronen Zvulun/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsKFAR VRADIM, Israel, Nov 23 (Reuters) - Eitan Gonen sits in his daughter Romi's bedroom. Outside, the world waits for Israel's temporary truce with Hamas to take effect and for the release of some of the hostages held in Gaza. The Hamas attack, in which Israel says 1,200 people were killed, sparked the nearly seven-week-old war in Gaza. Israel says its mission is to eradicate Hamas and return the roughly 240 hostages held in Gaza. Under Qatari mediation, Israel and Hamas have agreed to a temporary ceasefire during which some Gaza hostages will be repatriated in exchange for the release of three times the number of Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails.

"We cannot wait any longer, so we are demand(ing) them to do that now, to pay any price to bring the hostages back." Many relatives and friends of the missing fear they will come to harm in Israeli attacks on Gaza designed to destroy Hamas. The government says the offensive improves the chances of recovering hostages, perhaps via a mediated prisoner exchange. Two and a half weeks after sending tanks and ground troops into northern Gaza, Israeli forces entered a hospital early Wednesday that they claim Hamas operates out of. The Israeli army claims the militant group uses hospitals as cover for its fighters, and has set up its main command center in and beneath Shifa Hospital, the largest in the besieged territory. Both Hamas and Shifa Hospital staff deny the Israeli allegations. Both Hamas and Shifa Hospital staff deny the Israeli allegations. CNN —A 23-year-old German-Israeli woman who was kidnapped from the Nova music festival by Hamas militants on October 7 has been found dead, the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said. Louk was attending the festival in southern Israel on October 7 when Hamas breached the border between Gaza and Israel. Shani told her mother she was at the festival with few places to hide. The body of Louk, a dual Israeli-German citizen, was seen on video seemingly unconscious on the back of a Hamas truck after the music festival attack. It was very scary, and we were very worried,” Louk’s mother told CNN in the days after the rampage.

Netanyahu’s tweet comes at a time when he is also under increasing pressure from the families of hostages for a “comprehensive deal” to ensure their release. “At no point was a warning given to Prime Minister Netanyahu on Hamas’s intention to start a war. Opposition leader and former Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid also rebuked Netanyahu. Things I said following the press conference should not have been said and I apologize for that,” he wrote on X. Israel’s security chiefs had his “full backing,” he added. Netanyahu was asked about such a deal at his Saturday news conference, and acknowledged he discussed the option with the families.

However, it does not appear as though any major ground offensive aimed at seizing and holding significant amounts of the territory is yet underway. Hamas’ initial surprise attacks on Israel earlier in the month killed more than 1,400 people, most of them civilians. In its Saturday statement, the UN added that a ceasefire could facilitate the release of Israeli hostages held in Gaza. Saudi Arabia “condemns and denounces any ground incursions” by Israeli forces into Gaza due to the impact on civilians, the country’s Foreign Ministry wrote in a Saturday statement. Citing the UN resolution calling for a humanitarian truce, Abbas said Israel responded “with more bombing and destruction.”This story is developing and is being updated.

“All we have been told is that her phone is in Gaza,” Meirav Gonen, whose daughter Romi was kidnapped from the Supernova dance festival, told CNN. Across the street from where Moshe Barda and other family members were gathering, a much angrier protest was taking place on Friday. She told CNN that while she has been attending protests against the prime minister for years, this time feels different. If she is held with others, Moshe Barda said, she is likely to be taking care of everybody. Look at the picture, she is sitting on the motorcycle with her back straight … and she just saw her husband being murdered,” Moshe Barda said.

JERUSALEM, June 1 (Reuters) - Accustomed to a hostile response from some religious residents of Jerusalem, participants in the city's Gay Pride parade on Thursday found themselves in the unwelcome situation of looking to a far-rightist former adversary for their protection. Catapulted into national politics last year at the head of the ultranationalist Jewish Power party, Ben-Gvir has disavowed his past remarks. Ahead of the event, police said three people were detained over suspected threats against the marchers. The Islamist militant group Hamas also called on Palestinians, who contest Israeli control of Jerusalem, to "confront" the Gay Pride parade. Describing Jerusalem as a "mosaic" of differing views, Ben-Gvir said he would also safeguard the right to counter-protest.

GENEVA, Feb 21 (Reuters) - The United Nations' human rights chief on Tuesday voiced concern that a proposed overhaul of Israel's judicial system would "drastically undermine" the ability of the judiciary to uphold human rights and the rule of law. "Breaking from decades of settled practice, such a law would drastically undermine the ability of the judiciary to vindicate individual rights and to uphold the rule of law as an effective institutional check on executive and legislative power," said U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk. Israel's ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, Meirav Eilon Shahar, has said a previous statement from Turk showed prejudice. Austria's Turk, who became High Commissioner in October, earlier this month called on Israel to ensure respect of international rights law after his office documented a record 151 killings of Palestinians by security forces last year.
