A lot of parents think they don't need to talk to their kids about porn, but as an adult filmmaker, I never had that option. Talking to children about porn isn't just important for parents in the adult entertainment industry, though. We can't assume our kids have not seen porn. That's why I created the nonprofit The Porn Conversation to give families tools to help them talk with kids about porn literacy. Pointing out the things we see and questioning them helps children build the skills they'll need to understand porn.

The more time adolescents spend on screens and social media, the greater the likelihood that they will be bullied about their weight, according to the study. An X spokesperson said the social media platform’s policies had evolved since the data was first collected. “Weight stigma and bias are common on social media,” Ganson said in an email. “Social media use is ubiquitous among adolescents,” he added. Then, you can come up with solutions together on how to handle social media moving forward, Hanson said.

Related storiesLast week, a duo from Stanford University and Georgetown University published a paper — not yet peer-reviewed — about AI images on Facebook, after studying 120 Facebook pages through early March. It's been covered by other media outlets well before last week's study; 404 Media wrote about it in December. Meta's president of global affairs said in February that the company is working on generative AI labels it will roll out later this year. Notably, this comes in an election year that's already been marred by generative AI issues, online and off. But I don't want to see labeled generative AI content in my feed — I don't want any generative AI pictures at all.

Around 40% of teenagers say they have cut back on their time on social media, according to a report published Monday by the Pew Research Center. Nearly the same proportion of teens acknowledge that they spend “too much” time on their smartphones (38%) and social media (27%). However, some revealed mixed emotions, as 44% of the teens surveyed said they feel anxious when they’re without their phones. Many parents also say they are keeping tabs on their teens’ smartphone and social media use, with half of parent respondents reporting they’ve looked through their children’s phones, particularly parents of younger teens. (And in most cases, their children seem to know it: 43% of teen respondents said their parents had looked through their phones.)

In repelling disinformation, Chinese and domestic, Taiwan offers an example to other democracies holding elections this year. And when the election results came out, they thought something was up,” said Eve Chiu, the editor-in-chief of Taiwan’s FactCheck Center, a nonprofit journalism organization. Taiwan's FactCheck Center debunked multiple videos of alleged voter fraud, including another one in which voting officials make a human error caught on camera. Taiwan has been able to effectively respond to Chinese disinformation in part because of how seriously the threat is perceived there, according to Kenton Thibaut, a senior resident fellow and expert on Chinese disinformation at the Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensic Research Lab. Others like, Taiwan FactCheck Center, are careful to not take government money so as to preserve their independence, said Chiu.

With lots of kids now getting their news from social media – where disinformation and content created by artificial intelligence run rampant – 18 states have some form of K-12 media literacy education on the books, according to Media Literacy Now. Of those, four – Delaware, Texas, New Jersey and, starting this year, California – mandate media literacy, with lesson standards now being crafted state by state. “But we haven’t really taught people how to use them ethically, efficiently and responsibly.”To do that, a media literacy lesson might include analyzing which emotions the wording of a mass media headline evoke. And California starting this year requires media literacy instruction to be integrated into K-12 mathematics, science and history-social science curriculums when they’re revised, according to the bill. Washington CNN —Elon Musk is an increasingly important player in global affairs and has been touring the world to meet with political leaders in recent months. “We can observe Elon Musk’s Twitter/X activity that he regularly consumes right-wing content and this increased during COVID-19,” Facciani said in an email. More recently, however, Musk’s ambitions have come a bit closer to earth and become far more concrete. There are many world leaders who hold extreme or far-right views, of course. Musk’s outbursts that contradict widely held international norms and values are meant for a specific internet audience that Musk mistakes for being representative of the wider world.

The United Nations has not been granted “powers to regulate all internet content,” as claimed in an article circulating online. The article cites a report published by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in November that outlines guidelines on governing the internet as proof. CNN —America loves to punish a “bad mother” — and there is a long history of using prominent celebrities as cautionary figures of abominable motherhood. So when news broke that 34-year-old musician Joe Jonas filed for divorce from 27-year-old actor Sophie Turner, it wasn’t surprising that the media narrative was that Turner wanted to go out at night while Jonas wanted to parent. Gossip sites like TMZ and Page Six framed their “different lifestyles” — Turner as a party girl and Jonas as a “homebody” trying to look out for his daughters. In the past, efforts to paint women as bad mothers during a divorce would have worked. But that’s not what is happening with the Jonas and Turner situation so far.

SYDNEY, July 11 (Reuters) - Social media giant Meta Platforms (META.O), owner of Facebook and Instagram, plans to label government-affiliated accounts on its new Twitter-like platform Threads, an executive told an Australian inquiry on foreign interference on Tuesday. The disclosure comes less than a week after Meta launched Threads, which is widely seen as similar to the microblogging site Twitter. Twitter has removed tags from government-affiliated accounts since billionaire Elon Musk took it private in 2022, bringing complaints about degrading users' media literacy. Asked if Russian state-affiliated broadcaster RT or Chinese government-affiliated publisher Xinhua News Agency would be tagged accordingly on Threads, Machin said, "that's our aspiration". "To the effect that any state-affiliated media are violating our policies, we would remove them," he told the inquiry.

Each school year, the 10th graders in her class at Scarsdale High School in New York watch “The Social Dilemma,” a 2020 documentary about the harms of social media. Ron DeSantis signed an education bill that prohibits students from accessing certain social media platforms on school Wi-Fi and requires instruction on the negative impacts of social media. These efforts come amid heightened bipartisan pressure from lawmakers for social media companies to do more to protect their youngest users. Teachers openly remind students how their social media history lives on and how it can be perceived among colleges and employers, English said. “Many students don’t even understand most of these dangers,” said Marc Berkman, director of The Organization for Social Media Safety.

“Social media is neither inherently harmful nor beneficial to our youth,” said Dr. Thema Bryant, the APA’s president. The recommendations emphasize that adolescents should have instruction in social media literacy and psychological development before joining social media as well as occasional training to bolster their knowledge as they go along, all to minimize potential harm. They also advise that social media use should be tailored to the child’s developmental stage — and monitored by adults in the case of younger children. But how do you convince a teenager to get on board with safer social media use? Teens are experiencing much of their social life on social media, and rather than shame it, we should collaborate with the younger generation, she said.
Trusted partners say warnings were ignoredInsider spoke with six current and former trusted partners from Ethiopia who said that Facebook routinely ignored their pleas to take down content that they deemed hateful or likely to incite violence. Some of the trusted partners declined to be named because they've faced death threats and fear for their own safety. Multiple trusted partners in Ethiopia said hate speech is still proliferating on the platform. Rafiq Copeland, a senior adviser at InterNews, one of Meta's longest-standing trusted partners globally, told Insider that the core complaints of trusted partners in Ethiopia have come up in other Rest of World countries. Even in Addis Ababa, it seemed that everyone knew about the Facebook posts, and many people now saw him as a traitor.
Auburn University has blocked TikTok on campus WiFi following a directive by Alabama's governor. One Auburn student told Insider that he'd already deleted the TikTok app because it was distracting him from work. "TikTok has never shared US data with the Chinese government, nor would we if asked," a TikTok spokesperson told Insider. Auburn students say the restrictions could affect their downtime, but professors worry it could have educational impacts, too. Auburn students are able to get around the restrictions by not connecting to the campus WiFi.
Here's why now is the best time for Gen Zers to start their own businesses. It helps that some successful Gen Zers are earning more than America's top CEOs. Here's why now is the best time to start a business for young people and two Gen Z entrepreneurs who have done it. New ventures in copywriting, social media management, and virtual assisting have been among some of the most successful, Mawhinney said. With this in mind, young founders have the opportunity to build brands that new workers resonate with.

Matt Soeth is an online safety consultant and former high school English teacher. He says you don't have to have a tech background to work in internet safety. This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Matt Soeth, a 44-year-old online safety consultant based in California, about how to create a safer internet. Much of our work in trust and safety is about managing human behavior (good and bad) and the systems and tools behind that. But, knowing how online safety works, and speaking to systems of education and programs, are both ways to get ready for interviews and find roles.
She specializes in work with tweens, teens and young adults. The fact that diet culture all over social media targets grown women is bad enough, but such messaging also trickles down to tweens and teens. But as we enter the winter holiday season, shame-based diet culture pressure, often wrapped up with toxic positivity to appear encouraging, increases. “Parents are often made to feel helpless in the face of TikTokers, peer pressure or wider diet culture, but it’s important to remember this: parents are influencers, too,” said Hanson. “Talk openly about it.”She suggests asking the following questions when discussing people’s messaging around diet culture:● Who are they?

The company is once again banning new political ads in the week before the election, as it did in 2020. Political ads, including information on how much money was behind them and how much they were viewed, are included in the company's transparency report. The NYU and Global Witness study found YouTube performed the best out of the platforms it tested in blocking ads with election misinformation. Becoming indistractable is the most important skill for the 21st century — and it's one that many parents fail to teach their kids. Two episodes of a kid-appropriate program on Netflix is about 45 minutes, I explained. As far as I was concerned, 45 minutes was fine with me, as it left plenty of time for other activities. Becoming indistractable is the most important skill for the 21st century — and it's one that many parents fail to teach their kids. "How do you plan to make sure you don't watch for more than 45 minutes per day?"
