Instead, that same night, U.S. immigration agents sent them back to Mexico under a Trump-era health code that has closed the border to many asylum seekers, she said. Yet, he kept in place a Trump-era health order, known as Title 42, that allows U.S. officials to rapidly expel migrants at U.S. borders during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since Biden took office, U.S. border authorities have recorded more than 400,000 expulsions under Title 42, according to data from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency. A White House spokesperson said Title 42 was a public health directive, not an immigration enforcement tool, and was necessary on health grounds. "We believe that it is time to end Title 42," Kelly Clements, the deputy high commissioner for the United Nations refugee agency, told Reuters.

Fear has invaded the Mexican border city of Reynosa after gunmen in vehicles killed 14 people, including taxi drivers, workers and a nursing student, and security forces responded with operations that left four suspects dead. While this city across the border from McAllen, Texas is used to cartel violence as a key trafficking point, the 14 victims in Saturday's attacks appeared to be what Tamaulipas Gov. Francisco García Cabeza de Vaca called “innocent citizens” rather than members of one gang killed by a rival. Local businessman Misael Chavarria Garza said many businesses closed early Saturday after the attacks and people were very scared as helicopters flew overhead. The border city of McAllen, Texas, which is about 85% Latino, elected its first GOP mayor in 24 years. Last year, Trump and the GOP saw a major surge in Latino support in Texas' Rio Grande Valley. Most notably, the border city of McAllen, Texas, which is about 85% Latino, elected its first GOP mayor in 24 years. Javier Villalobos, a city commissioner and former chairman of the Hidalgo County GOP, won about 200 more votes than Democrat Veronica Vela Whitacre in Saturday's runoff election. But for Laz Alonso and Raúl Castillo, Guy Ritchie’s new armored-truck thriller “Wrath of Man” has also served a warm payback for them as Latino actors. LEGAL BATTLES OVER REDISTRICTING begin in earnest now that the Census Bureau has released its apportionment data. Alabama has already sued the Census Bureau to release the redistricting data as soon as possible. He noted the discrepancy between Census Bureau estimates of the Latino population and the lower numbers that came out this week, which could have resulted in fewer seats for Latino-heavy red states like Texas and Florida. “It’s up to the census to be very transparent about what they did and did not do,” Kincaid said. A Gonzalez spokesman said he “believes in intelligent, targeted investments in cutting-edge technology and resources that will result in real border security” instead of a border wall.

The Cavazos family is set to lose 6.6 acres of land, as the Biden administration fails to put forth a plan to repurpose emergency border wall funding. The Cavazos family has resisted efforts, from President George W. Bush's administration through President Donald Trump's administration — and now under President Joe Biden — to give up their land for border wall construction. Many of those cases, including that of the Cavazos family, lingered in court into the Biden administration. We're not going to confiscate the land," Biden told NPR. In early April, DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said that "gaps" in border wall construction may need to be filled.

Families are being released at a rapid clip into border communities, which need to test them for Covid-19 and quarantine them if necessary. All along the border, and in some cities a little farther away, local officials are getting calls: Migrants are about to be dropped at bus stations or airports, at migrant shelters and even occasionally hotels. While the record numbers of unaccompanied children at the border have captured the greatest public attention thus far, the number of migrant families heading to the border is threatening to become a humanitarian crisis. The U.S. saw similar increases in 2014, 2016 and 2019, under different presidents and a range of border policies. This time, though, the situation is made all the more difficult by the continuing coronavirus pandemic that has strained government and local resources.

Pence made that clear in a Tuesday night letter on White House stationary to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. "They're telling him he can't," one of the GOP sources close to the White House said. But none of that has had the desired effect: Traffickers have paid millions of dollars to US border agents to keep drugs and people flowing throughout Trump's time in office. The cartel operative in El Paso confirmed that was a method to entice border agents. In September, six border agents were arrested on suspicion of stealing cocaine and marijuana from dealers to sell in the US. Jenn Budd, a former Border Patrol agent in San Diego, said corruption is part of Border Patrol culture. Budd, now a whistleblower about Border Patrol corruption, thinks management is responsible for corruption and abuse inside the agencies.

MATAMOROS, Mexico — Griselda was 38 weeks pregnant when she sneaked across the Rio Grande into the United States late one night last year. When she finally gave birth 10 days later, her tiny daughter joined her there until a local shelter made room for them. The wide-ranging new controls on immigration put into place under the Trump administration have made it harder for migrants of all kinds to cross the Southern border, but they have been particularly difficult for pregnant women, who often arrive at the border after arduous journeys, in a state of exhaustion. Previously, many such women would be allowed to petition for asylum and give birth in safety in the United States while their cases were being considered. But most now, like Griselda, are sent swiftly back to Mexico to take their chances in crowded shelters and filthy tent camps.

Melissa and her husband, both Christian missionaries from Mexico, had been living outside Austin for about a year when they discovered she was pregnant. Melissa planned to deliver her baby at a birthing center — a licensed facility that accepts cash payments from low-income women. But Ms. Rojas, who was helping her by providing naturopathic prenatal care, worried that Melissa would not make it nine months without requiring a medical intervention. The next evening, in the darkness of her hospital room, Melissa asked about paying her bill in cash. As the nurse turned down the lights in her room, Melissa closed her eyes, trying not to think about the future, but she could not sleep all night.

Maria Hinojosa may be one of the country's most well-known and respected Latina journalists, but as she describes in her highly acclaimed, recently published memoir, her path to success was not a given. It means a lot to me, especially since I really haven’t left my apartment in Harlem in months.”"Once I Was You," a memoir by Maria Hinojosa. Writing a book is a solitary experience, Hinojosa noted, so she has missed the experience of doing live readings and appearances. I had good times and bad times, and they were formative moments in my life as a journalist. Hinojosa’s last words to her were, “I see you — because once I was you.”Fighting "incorrect narratives"Surveying today’s media landscape, Hinojosa has mixed feelings.
