Amazon's executive in charge of its private-label business has found a new role on the supply chain side, following the company's decision to axe dozens of house brands, Insider has learned. Matt Taddy, formerly Amazon's VP of private brands, is now VP of supply chain optimization technology, also known as SCOT, according to an internal email reviewed by Insider. Amazon's private label business launched dozens of in-house brands in recent years across a number of categories, including clothing, furniture, and electronics. The Federal Trade Commission said in a lawsuit against Amazon last month that the company "degrades its search quality by stacking the deck against third-party competitors of Amazon's private label products." In response, Amazon started significantly scaling back its private label business, and decided to cut many of these brands, according to the Wall Street Journal .

REUTERS/Pascal Rossignol/File PhotoAug 10 (Reuters) - Amazon.com (AMZN.O) is shelving several private clothing brands, a source familiar with the matter said on Thursday, as the e-commerce giant tries to cut costs and address antitrust scrutiny. The move was first reported by the Wall Street Journal, which said the company has decided to eliminate 27 of its 30 in house-label clothing brands, leaving it with just Amazon Essentials, Amazon Collection and Amazon Aware. "If there are products that aren't resonating with customers we deprecate those items and look for other opportunities to better meet their needs," Matt Taddy, vice president of Amazon Private Brands, said in an email to Reuters. Other critics have said Amazon abused its gatekeeper power by refusing to allow big rivals to advertise against its products on the Amazon platform and used below-cost prices on goods and services to keep customers, including on Prime.

The FTC began probing Amazon during the Trump administration when the government decided to investigate several big tech companies for allegedly breaking antitrust law.

Amazon is cutting some of its private label brands as part of a broader effort to rein in costs, the company confirmed to CNBC. The number of Amazon's private label brands has expanded rapidly over the years to include things like Goodthreads apparel, Rivet furniture and Presto! Matt Taddy, Vice President of Amazon Private Brands, said in a statement that the company has looked to eliminate some in-house products after determining they didn't resonate with customers. Amazon has said sales from private label brands represent only 1% of its total retail sales. As of 2019, the company said it had 158,000 private brand products across 45 brands, along with other brands sold by its online grocery service Amazon Fresh.
