Trump relented and instead hunkered down at the White House to watch television images of the mob rioting he is accused of triggering. Trump’s last days in the White House have been marked by rage and turmoil, multiple sources said. The White House declined to comment for this story. If convicted by the Senate in a trial that would occur after he has left the White House, Trump could be banned from holding federal office again. “I would be floored if that were to happen,” another White House official said.

Pence made that clear in a Tuesday night letter on White House stationary to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. "They're telling him he can't," one of the GOP sources close to the White House said. And a wave of recent departures also came from top White House staffers citing the attack on the Capitol.. "This is him by himself and it is something that has never happened before," said one former senior Trump administration official. Chad Wolf, the acting secretary of homeland security, has resigned, multiple outlets reported Monday. Chad Wolf, the acting secretary of homeland security, announced in a letter to employees Monday that he is resigning, Fox News and NBC News reported. Shortly after his statement was released, the White House announced that Trump had withdrawn Wolf's nomination to be the permanent Department of Homeland Security secretary. After former Homeland Security chief Kirstjen Nielsen resigned in 2019, Trump bypassed a senior homeland security official who was legally designated to temporarily lead the agency by tapping Kevin McAleenan to be the department's acting head. With Wolf stepping down, FEMA administrator Pete Gaynor is set to take over as acting head of Homeland Security.

Just the previous day, the Republican president had seemingly incited a mob to swarm the Capitol seeking to overturn the election result. In certifying Biden’s win, longtime Trump allies such as Vice President Mike Pence and Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell ignored his pleas for intervention, while the violence at the Capitol spurred several White House aides to quit. “There is no question that the President formed the mob, the President incited the mob, the President addressed the mob. He lit the flame,” House Republican Conference Chairwoman Liz Cheney said on Twitter. Enough is enough,” Senator Lindsey Graham, one of Trump’s staunchest allies in Congress, said on the Senate floor.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao resigned Thursday because of the mob attack on the Capitol fueled by President Donald Trump's rhetoric, saying the riot had "deeply troubled" her. Chao is the wife of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, and is the first Trump Cabinet member to quit in connection with Wednesday's chaos. On Wednesday, first lady Melania Trump's chief of staff Stephanie Grisham — who is the former White House press secretary — resigned in part due to the riot. There were growing calls Thursday for President Trump to be removed from office, either through Vice President Mike Pence invoking the Constitution's 25th Amendment, or through impeachment by Congress. A mob of Trump supporters then swarmed around and through the Capitol complex, invading lawmakers' offices and the Senate chambers.
