CNN —Scientists have uncovered a woolly rhino so well preserved in the Russian permafrost for more than 32,000 years that its skin and fur are still intact. This woolly rhino died when it was about four years old and that age, combined with its good state of preservation, has allowed scientists to learn more about the now-extinct species. This woolly rhino mummy has been well-preserved by the permafrost. Once this woolly rhino died, it lay frozen in permafrost until a team of Russian scientists from research institutions in Yakutsk and Moscow discovered it in August 2020 on the banks of the Tirekhtyakh River. As part of an agreement with local authorities in the region where the woolly rhino was found, tusk hunters have to contact paleontologists whenever they discover something of interest like this mummified woolly rhino, meaning that there is a steady stream of well-preserved specimens specifically from this area.

Sluggish salty snack sales have prompted questions about whether Ozempic and obesity treatments like Wegovy and Zepbound ae to blame. GLP-1 drugs have been cheered as an effective method to help patients with diabetes and obesity to manage their blood sugar levels, hunger and weight. Lieberman found that the temporary price reduction at Wal-Mart stores drove an increase in both the product's volume and sales, leading to the conclusion that snack sales were hurt by price pressures for consumers. "All said, the data suggests to us that the primary challenge facing the salty snack category is affordability and arguably not GLP-1s and evolving health & wellness trends as some people might opine," she wrote in the report. "The salty snack category raises prices faster than the rest of the grocery store, so we probably have more work to do to right-size the prices," he told CNBC in an interview.

While school meal prices vary throughout the country, a survey conducted by the School Nutrition Association, a trade organization, found that lunches typically cost about $2.83 for elementary school students, $3 for middle school students and $3.05 for high school students. The prices mean that the $100 million in transaction fees could have bought another 33 million or so school lunches or over 55 million school breakfasts. “Junk fees on school lunch should not exist. A handful of states have made universal school meals permanent, but most have returned to the pre-pandemic format. “School lunch should always be free, and definitely free of judgment,” Fetterman said at the hearing on Wednesday.

Bitcoin is likely to reach at least one more all-time high by the end of this year, according to Standard Chartered. That's likely regardless of whether Vice President Kamala Harris or former President Donald Trump wins the presidential election this November – a variable that others have viewed as a make-or-break game changer for the industry since Trump threw his public support behind the industry this summer. "BTC will end 2024 at fresh all-time highs under either election outcome – [circa] $125,000 level under Trump or c.$75,000 level under Harris," he said. The firm maintains its view that bitcoin will reach the $200,000 level by the end of 2025, regardless of this year's election outcome. That's one reason so many are hoping the election could trigger some movement in bitcoin.

Despite the increasingly partisan sentiment in the cryptocurrency industry, bitcoin will thrive over the long term regardless of who wins the U.S. presidential election in November. It helps that bitcoin became more institutionalized than ever this year with the introduction of U.S. bitcoin exchange traded funds. "If Trump wins in November, will there be an immediate pump? If Harris wins, could there be some immediate sell pressure? The rate of weight loss with the experimental pill, called amycretin, appears to be more rapid than what’s seen for other drugs. “It’s roughly double the weight loss rate seen with current GLP-1 agonists and approaching procedural or surgical-level outcomes,” said Dr. Christopher McGowan, a gastroenterologist who runs a weight loss clinic in North Carolina. McGowan said that while the weight loss was significant, he still has concerns about how fast people lost weight. “While losing weight is seemingly the end goal, how that weight is lost matters,” he said. Spratt said she would like to know how much of the weight loss came from fat compared with muscle.

— A Massachusetts judge has declined to dismiss two charges, including murder, in the case of Karen Read, who is blamed in the death of her Boston police officer boyfriend. Read is accused of ramming into John O’Keefe with her SUV and leaving him for dead in a January 2022 snowstorm. Her two-month trial ended in July when jurors declared they were hopelessly deadlocked and a judge declared a mistrial on the fifth day of deliberations. Judge Beverly Cannone’s decision, released on Friday, means the case can move forward to a new trial set to begin Jan. 27. She could poll the jury, Weinberg said, on whether they reached a verdict on the three counts or bring in the four jurors to be questioned anonymously.

A bull bound for a Massachusetts slaughterhouse briefly escaped its fate Monday after it crashed through electrified fences, jumped a berm, ran across on an interstate and swam through a lake, authorities said. However, police officers in Raynham, south of Boston, fatally shot the 1,300-pound animal when it charged at them, police said in a news release. Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump on Thursday said that he should have a voice when the Federal Reserve makes its decisions on interest rates. Among the ideas being floated are forcing the Fed to consult with the president when making rate decisions. While in office from 2017 to 2021, President Trump was a fierce critic of Chair Jerome Powell, whom Trump appointed in 2018. The Fed hiked benchmark interest rates 5.25 percentage points from March 2022-July 2023 in an effort to bring down inflation. Trump generally favors lower interest rates and criticized the Fed frequently for raising in 2018.

Expensive Big Mac meals and fears of surge pricing at grocery stores have put food chains and consumer product companies in politicians' crosshairs. Walmart , McDonald's and Kroger are just a few of the companies that have found themselves in the debate over high inflation in the 2024 election. Democrats — particularly those like Casey who are trying to win races in competitive swing states — are trying to capitalize on frustration against companies over inflation. (The source of the data is unclear, and McDonald's has denied that its average prices have risen that much.) The criticism could also add to the pressure companies face to show they can lower prices or offer value.

Most people undergo a knee replacement due to osteoarthritis in the joint, which can cause pain, swelling and less knee mobility. “We’ve always had this idea that muscle mass matters and helps protect joints,” said Miller, who was not involved with the study. The data that van Meurs and her colleagues studied came from people with an average body mass index of 26. “Before engaging in a lot of weight-bearing activity, do some training in the gym to strengthen your leg muscles,” van Meurs said. On a 91-degree day in June, a group of 20- and 30-somethings in sundresses and Bermuda shorts was navigating a dimly lit cocktail lounge whose air-conditioning was on the fritz. It didn’t matter: Cocktails with names like the Ghost Writer were flowing, and patrons were posing in front of a velvet emerald curtain, holding “Team Daisy” and “Team Gatsby” hand fans emblazoned with the faces of Eva Noblezada and Jeremy Jordan, the stars of the Broadway musical “The Great Gatsby.”Flickering candles adorned tables at the side of the room, where people colored in silhouettes of the character Myrtle Wilson, a social climber in the musical, and filled out trivia sheets with questions like “Is Gatsby in East or West Egg?” Silver gift bags filled with miniature bottles of Champagne and “Old Sport” stickers sat on a table by the door. “We are in the Gatsby era,” said Francis Dominic, 31, a lifestyle and travel influencer, alluding to the Broadway musical and “Gatsby,” another high-profile stage adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel that last week ended its run at American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Mass., and is also aiming for Broadway.

Randy Kehler, a peace activist whose opposition to the Vietnam War so moved Daniel Ellsberg that he decided to leak the Pentagon Papers, the set of top-secret documents whose exposure changed the course of the war, died on July 21 at his home in Shelburne Falls, Mass. His wife, Betsy Corner, said the cause was myalgic encephalomyelitis, also known as chronic fatigue syndrome. Mr. Kehler’s pivotal encounter with Mr. Ellsberg, a defense analyst, at an antiwar conference in 1969 was just one episode in a life defined by determined opposition to America’s military machinery. Investors are coming back into the market after bitcoin ended last week flat and ether dropped roughly 8%. Additionally, traders are watching the Federal Reserve, Bank of Japan and the Bank of England – all of which are meeting this week. Eyes are on Fed Chair Jerome Powell in particular, hoping his comments will confirm an interest rate cut in September. He also said it would be his policy to keep 100% of the bitcoin the U.S. government currently holds (about 210,000 bitcoins), serving as the beginning of a National Strategic Bitcoin Reserve. In remarks that garnered the biggest roar from the audience, Trump vowed that he would replace Gensler "on day one."

Trump, the Republican nominee for president, has raised more than $4 million from a mix of digital tokens, a campaign aide told CNBC. At least 19 donors contributed more than $2.15 million bitcoin to the committee, the filing shows. Brian Hughes, a Trump campaign aide, said that of the more than $4 million in crypto raised, most of it arrived in bitcoin. "While the Biden-Harris Administration stifles innovation with more regulation and higher taxes, President Trump is ready to encourage American leadership in this and other emerging technologies." Thus far, it appears the Trump campaign is mostly converting these contributions immediately to USDC and then liquidating the donations.
