Martin J. Wygod, a Wall Street whiz who graduated from walking horses after races to owning and breeding championship thoroughbreds when he made millions from investing in online companies that sold pharmaceuticals by mail and pruned medical paperwork, died on April 12 in San Diego. His daughter, Emily Bushnell, said he died in a hospital from complications of lung disease. Raised near two racetracks in suburban New York and mentored by a software pioneer, an investor and a gambler, Mr. Wygod was said to have been the youngest managing partner of a New York Stock Exchange brokerage in the 1960s. The sale netted Mr. Wygod $250 million. “Marty Wygod made $6 billion for himself because he developed a data base.”

The teardrop shape of Sputnik Planitia is a result of the frigidity of Pluto’s core, as well as the relatively low velocity of the impact itself, the team found. The researchers believe that the new theory regarding Pluto’s heart could shed more light on how the mysterious dwarf planet formed.

CNN —When NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test spacecraft intentionally slammed into the asteroid Dimorphos in September 2022, the impact may have caused “global deformation” of the space rock, according to new research. Dimorphos is a moonlet asteroid that orbits a larger parent asteroid known as Didymos. The DART mission ended upon impact, but prior to colliding with Dimorphos, the spacecraft transmitted an incredibly detailed view of the little asteroid’s boulder-covered surface that is helping researchers learn more about how the space rock formed. Rather than forming a simple crater on Dimorphos, the DART impact reshaped the entire asteroid, the results have suggested. Recreating the DART impactA team of researchers modeled the impact using the Bern smoothed-particle hydrodynamics shock physics code to achieve their results.

But in a new study published Tuesday, some scientists claim it may not be recovering at all, and that the hole may even be expanding. In a paper, published by Nature Communications, they found that ozone levels have reduced by 26% since 2004 at the core of the hole in the Antarctic springtime. They used historical data to compare that behavior and changing ozone levels, and to measure signs of ozone recovery. “Altogether, our findings reveal the recent, large ozone holes may not be caused just by CFCs,” Kessenich said. “Those events have been shown to have strongly decreased the ozone hole size,” he said, “so including those events would probably have nullified any long-term negative trend.”

REUTERS/Evelyn HocksteinAug 14 (Reuters) - A coming regulatory proposal will overhaul how large regional banks prepare living wills in the event of their failure, U.S. Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation Chairman Martin Gruenberg said on Monday. Banks are currently required to submit plans to regulators detailing how they would wind up their businesses should they fail. "The proposed rule would require a bank to provide a strategy that is not dependent on an over-the-weekend sale," Gruenberg said. The proposal would also require banks to identify parts that could be sold separately, Gruenberg said, noting that could reduce their size and "expand the universe of possible acquirers." The proposal would require additional information from banks with more than $50 billion in assets, but not full resolution plans, he said.

SANTIAGO, Aug 3 (Reuters) - A winter heat wave bringing historically high temperatures to Chile is a "window" to an increasingly warm future, according to scientists. "Having temperatures of 37 degrees (99 degrees Fahrenheit) in the middle of southern winter is extraordinary," said Raul Cordero, a climatologist at the University of Santiago. He added that while it's often hard to establish a connection between extreme weather events and climate change, temperatures in parts of Chile have been breaking records year after year. "Winter high-temperature events do affect the spring flow rate that can be expected from melt," Jacques said. According to the latest service reports, high temperatures in the north and center of the country will last all week.
