Two people have been charged in connection with the murder of an 18-year-old in Connecticut whose body was found wrapped in a comforter on a highway, as family say the suspects are the victim’s cousins. Edgar Josué Chiche Martínez’s body was found on Pope Park Highway in Hartford Saturday morning. He was just days away from his 19th birthday, family members told NBC Connecticut. The teen was charged with murder and tampering with evidence while Soto-Veliz was charged with hindering prosecution and tampering with evidence. Although police did not disclose a potential motive, Martínez Mayen said the family believes the slaying was over money.

He could have made himself not a future president but a future monarch, in effect,” Raskin wrote. Raskin continued, quoting Biden, “’In America,’ you say, ‘genuine leaders — democratic leaders, with a small ‘d’? Everything else pales in comparison to this struggle, even your magnificent policy achievements.”He framed Biden’s choice about the future of his reelection campaign as a political one. They are also political questions because both political leaders and tens of millions of voting citizens have formed judgments based on the events of the last few weeks. Raskin added, ”Your situation is tricky because you are both our star pitcher and our Manager.

“Can I ask you something?” he said when invited to justify Cristiano Ronaldo’s continued selection in Portugal’s starting XI. If Ronaldo doesn’t score, what else does he bring to the team apart from the histrionic gesturing of a frustrated traffic warden? “Do you know how many minutes Ronaldo played last season?” Martinez knowingly queried. Portugal’s blushes were spared as they came from behind to earn victory over the Czech Republic in their opening match at Euro 2024. They dominated the ball and Czech Republic were happy enough with that, but Portugal never really clicked, despite deploying an admirable fluid system. CNN —Prince Harry and his wife Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, visited Uvalde, Texas on Saturday and met with the family of Irma Garcia, a beloved schoolteacher killed in the Robb Elementary School shooting. Irma Garcia’s nephew, John Martinez, told CNN Harry and Meghan have kept in contact with his family since the massacre, which the US Justice Department and other agencies agree was met with a disastrous law enforcement response. Meghan attended and spoke at the South by Southwest festival in Austin on Friday, the day before she and Harry made a stop in Uvalde to check in on the family, Martinez said. John Martinez“It was such a beautiful experience, they’re so nice and compassionate, very down to earth, humble people,” Martinez told CNN in a text message. ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Paul Sewald watched the end of his first World Series game in the Arizona Diamondbacks clubhouse and the trainer's room, not from the center of a celebration on the mound as he had imagined. Arizona won that thrilling classic in seven games, but now the team's last three World Series losses have all followed tying home runs in the ninth. The Diamondbacks' bullpen entered Friday with a 2.94 ERA this postseason and hadn't blown a save since the regular season. Arizona pitchers, however, lost their grip in the World Series opener. “You can’t walk 10 batters in a World Series game and expect to hold them in the situation that we held them in,” Lovullo said.

The statue, located just north of Espanola, New Mexico, was removed in 2020 during nationwide anti-racism protests. Prior to the shooting Martinez told a police officer and protesters to “fuck off” when they approached him, Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s Deputy Steve Dennis testified. Protest organizer Mateo Peixinho said he asked Martinez prior to the shooting why he had come to the event. PHOENIX (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers’ third straight 100-win season led to a third consecutive postseason flop. “There’s some things with the format that people can dissect or whatever, but the bottom line is that the last two years we’ve got outplayed in the postseason,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. The Dodgers won the NL West in 10 of those seasons, yet their only World Series in that span was following the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. And after winning 100 games this season, the Dodgers were swept by Arizona, which had 16 fewer wins. It's just how I didn't help the team win the series and that's the most disappointing part, letting your guys down.”___

My Unlikely Writing Teacher: Pedro Martinez

Socked in during Covid lockdown, I became increasingly obsessed with archival footage of “actual human life,” so I scoured the internet for any videos I could find of Pedro Martinez, my favorite baseball player, in action. Contemporary viewers can see what I would argue is not merely a baseball game but a novel, an opera, a lyric masterpiece. Fastball, curveball, changeup. Normal sentence, long sentence, short sentence. Straight declarative sentence, periodic sentence, sentence fragment.

Martinez instead granted the federal prosecutors’ motion for a longer-than-usual sentence. Bianca Rudolph was killed in 2016 while she and Lawrence Rudolph were on a hunting trip in Zambia. I would not murder my wife,” Rudolph told jurors when he took the stand in his own defense at his trial. Prosecutors argued Rudolph killed his wife of 30 years for the insurance money and to be with his girlfriend, Milliron. American investigators reopened the case after a friend of Bianca Rudolph contacted authorities and said she suspected foul play.

Martinez, Ms. Martinez’s son and a fourth-generation manager with his brother Michael Martinez, said he feels as duty bound to safeguard his grandmother’s recipe, as he does Chope’s thick-battered chiles rellenos and sturdy enchiladas. “Do you know what sazón means?” Mr. Martinez said. “Sazón means, like, the culture, the tradition, and the style of cooking all come together and create the flavor. That’s kind of what it means; that’s why it tastes so good.”An El Paso native, the chef John Lewis grew up eating at Chope’s, a straight shot up Interstate 10, every other Saturday. “Chope’s version exactly translates to how it’s read: It’s chiles with cheese.” He has tinkered with the simple dish for years and now serves a version at his New Mexican restaurant, Rancho Lewis, in Charleston, S.C.
“The intentions, of course, were never to cross over to Venezuela, he was just accompanying her,” said Henry Martínez, Hernández’s brother. The men told Hernández that if they wanted to enter Venezuela, he had to pay $100. Hernández told them he was not trying to enter the country and did not have $100. The U.S. has not had a diplomatic presence in Caracas since 2019, so access to jailed Americans has been limited since then. “Sometimes I can hear his voice weak and just frustrated and anxious,” said Henry Martínez.
CNN —Lionel Messi scored in what was the 1,000th game of his storied career as Argentina beat Australia 2-1 to advance to the World Cup quarterfinals. In the second half, Julián Álvarez capitalized on some slack goalkeeping by Australia stopper Mat Ryan to score his second goal of the tournament and extend Argentina’s lead. Those fans were soon crooning even more loudly when Messi curled a beautiful, left-footed effort past Australian keeper Ryan following a slick Argentina moved. After the break, Argentina began to turn on the style, though La Albiceleste’s second goal stemmed from hard work and pressing. With Australia pushing for a second goal, Argentina had an opportunities to catch the Socceroos on the break, with Lautaro Martínez missing numerous opportunities to seal the game.
With the FTC’s blessing, Haggen, a small supermarket chain in the Northwest with just 18 locations, bought 146 of the former Albertsons and Safeway stores, including the one where Martinez worked. In an weird twist, Albertsons bought back dozens of the same stores it previously sold to Haggen in bankruptcy court — at a lower price. Now she worries Kroger will divest Ralphs as part of its merger with Albertsons in a repeat of the Haggen 2015 deal. To address antitrust concerns that the merger will stifle competition in local markets where they overlap, Kroger and Albertsons plan to divest stores. In 2015, Haggen bought a Vons grocery store (owned by Safeway at the time) in Carpinteria as part of the Albertsons and Safeway divestitures.
Finishing bottom of the group at Russia 2018, a tournament Germany went into as defending champion, was a historic low for the four-time World Cup winner. But after that shock 2-1 defeat to Japan in its opening match, it is once again a distinct possibility. That result means the match against Spain is do or die for Germany, as a defeat would confirm an early flight home from Qatar. World Cup team camps have traditionally been somewhat strict, private affairs, but Spain head coach Luis Enrique has been taking an unconventional approach to passing the time behind closed doors. In Group E’s other match, Japan knows victory over Costa Rica will guarantee its place in the knockout stages.
CNN —Gareth Bale’s dramatic, late goal helped Los Angeles Football Club win the Major League Soccer Cup for the first time in a thrilling, frantic final against Philadelphia Union at Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles. “The reason why I came here was to try and help the club win the MLS Cup,” the Wales international added. Trailing 1-0 at the start of the second half, Dániel Gazdag of the Union scored the equalizer when he picked up José Martínez’s scuffed shot inside the box. The game remained knotted up until the 83rd minute when Jesús Murillo’s goal gave Los Angeles the lead again. McCarthy celebrates LAFC's victory in Los Angeles.

But when she won the spot, Martínez was told she would become the first woman to play college football among men in the country’s top amateur division. Many of us in Los Angeles are still in shock from the recently leaked audio recording of politicians spewing racist and hateful language. It laid bare the true colors of four of the most influential Latinx leaders in the country, whose collective power affects nearly 4 million Angelenos. But this is Los Angeles, one of the most diverse cities in the world. Hearing a public servant in one of the most powerful seats in our city government fantasize about committing violence against a Black child was extremely troubling. I get anxious just thinking about having to explain to my Black child what they need to know to survive in America.
Some may want to see the explosive, racist diatribes of a handful of prominent Los Angeles City Council members as an unfortunate incident that will eventually fade away. But the reality is that such prejudice from Latino to Latino and Latino to other racial groups is not so uncommon. That was on stark display in the conversation among former Los Angeles City Council President Nury Martinez, council members Kevin De León and Gil Cedillo and Los Angeles County Federation of Labor President Ron Herrera, who resigned Monday. "If you’re going to talk about Latino districts, what kind of districts are you trying to create?” she asks her colleagues in frustration. Zapotecs, or Indigenous people of Oaxacan descent, number about 200,000 in Los Angeles County, one of the largest Oaxacan communities outside Mexico.
The president of the Los Angeles City Council resigned Monday after an audio recording of racist remarks surfaced. Los Angeles City Council President Nury Martinez at Los Angeles City Hall on April 1, 2022. The 2021 audio from a political strategy meeting attended by a handful of Latino Democrats on the council was first reported Sunday by the Los Angeles Times. "Therefore, effective immediately I am resigning as President of the Los Angeles City Council," she said. Bonin has called for Martinez, De León and Herrera to resign and said the episode points to deep fissures in the city’s population.
