The Shelters Keeping People Out of Shelters
  + stars: | 2024-03-07 | by ( Aidan Gardiner | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Every day, people go to homeless shelters as a place of last resort. But some shelters, like the Marshall House in Hartford, Conn., are trying to help by turning people away. On a cold October morning, Ms. Rucker sat with Margaret Guzman; her boyfriend, Alex; and their 2-year-old son, Jayden, in a drafty intake room at Marshall House. Ms. Rucker said she had no beds for them, but then asked, “Do you have any family?” Around a small round table, she began to gently probe. They kept talking while Ms. Rucker listened.

He seems to have been a very good father, but his political worldview was predicated on a deep pessimism. The Republican Party in the 1920s, ’30s and early ’40s was steeped in pessimism, and that pessimism showed up as it often does: as nativism, isolationism and protectionism. As World War II loomed, Senator Gerald Nye urged the passage of several neutrality acts to keep us from exporting arms to warring nations and opposed Lend-Lease to Britain. That version of the Republican Party ended in 1952, when Dwight Eisenhower defeated Taft for the Republican presidential nomination. Howard Buffett was so dismayed by the outcome that he refused to endorse Ike, his party leader.

At least three providers in Alabama, including the state’s largest health system, have halted some in vitro fertilization services since the court’s ruling. Republicans hold a majority in both the Alabama House and Senate. “Any legislation that gets passed is ultimately up to interpretation by the Alabama Supreme Court,” O’Conner said. A trial court initially dismissed the claims, but the state Supreme Court ruling reversed that decision. The clinic involved in the lawsuit, The Center for Reproductive Medicine in Mobile, is among those that have halted some IVF services.

CNN —As Alabama grapples with the fallout of a state Supreme Court decision that has widely halted access to in vitro fertilization, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Sunday voiced support for IVF – though he stopped short of calling for a law to protect access in Texas. Abbott said he wants to ensure some people will have access to IVF, invoking former President Donald Trump’s stance on the issue. The turmoil caused by the Alabama Supreme Court decision has extended beyond the state’s borders, with some families fleeing to other states, including Texas, where access to IVF services remains in place. Abbott said that he thought Texas would eventually address the issue, but that he wants to keep Texas a “pro-life state.”“Texas is a pro-life state, and we want to do everything possible that we can to maintain Texas being a pro-life state.

TELEVISION PERSONALITY Gayle King began honing her interview skills as a child in Chevy Chase, Md. Today, she adds a new prime-time CNN news show to her résumé, “King Charles,” which she hosts with sportscaster Charles Barkley. For many years, King was best known as a much-referenced pal of Oprah Winfrey , whom she met in Baltimore in 1976 when both worked in local news. But today, King is a force in her own right, equally admired for her outsize personality, adventurous fashion sense and facility for chatting uninhibitedly with celebrities such as Jay-Z and Barbra Streisand. “Shyness is not one of my strong suits.” Here, King opens up about her addiction to icing, unfashionable loyalty to iPods, robust high-low wardrobe and more.

Officials from multiple US agencies played a quiet role in getting the Cisco equipment into Ukraine, sources say. In this undated photo, an employee at Ukraine’s state-owned grid operator, Ukrenergo, works on the power grid. As the world’s largest maker of computer networking equipment, Cisco had resources to spare. The switch allows an electric substation – which has the crucial task of converting power from high to low voltage – to communicate with other parts of a power grid. The Justice Department filed a statement of interest in consolidated lawsuits against Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall seeking to block him from using conspiracy statutes to prosecute people who help Alabama women travel to obtain an abortion. Alabama bans abortion at any stage of pregnancy with no exceptions for rape and incest. The Justice Department argued in the filing that the U.S. Constitution protects the right to travel. The two Alabama lawsuits seek a ruling clarifying that people and groups can provide assistance to women leaving the state for an abortion. In a July statement issued when the lawsuits were filed, his office said it would enforce the state's abortion ban.

CNN —Alabama has scheduled the nation’s first execution by nitrogen hypoxia, an alternative to lethal injection, its Republican governor said. He asked the state to be put to death by nitrogen gas rather than lethal injection after what he called a botched execution. Smith’s execution now is set to take place between January 25 and 26, according to a news release from Gov. The court’s action came after the justices divided 6-3 earlier in the term to allow Smith’s execution to go forward by lethal injection. Smith’s case was tried by a jury twice, Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall has noted, both of which resulted in convictions.

Rite Aid was expected to close stores as part of its bankruptcy. Rite Aid told Insider that it considers a variety of factors when deciding to close a store, "including business strategy, lease and rent considerations, local business conditions and viability, and store performance." "We will also strive to transfer associates to other Rite Aid locations where possible," the company said.

Ambivalent during early internal debate, Kavanaugh eventually gave Roberts enough confidence that he could write an opinion for a majority. The state’s approach would have wholly undercut the history and purpose of the landmark Voting Rights Act, passed at the height of the Civil Rights movement to try to end race discrimination. Senior conservative Thomas, who has been unyielding in his rejection of race-based practices, was ready to write a far-reaching opinion against the court’s Voting Rights Act precedent for redistricting. Meanwhile, Kavanaugh and Roberts came together, ensuring the chief a five-justice majority for the robust endorsement of Voting Rights Act remedies when states discriminate in redistricting. The Alabama redistricting case shook out differently as Kavanaugh signed a significant portion of Roberts’ opinion.

If nothing else, the Supreme Court’s decision in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard is a victory for the conservative vision of the so-called colorblind Constitution — a Constitution that does not see or recognize race in any capacity, for any reason. As Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in his opinion for the court, “Eliminating racial discrimination means eliminating all of it.” Or as Justice Clarence Thomas put it in his concurrence, “Under our Constitution, race is irrelevant.”The language of colorblindness that Roberts and Thomas use to make their argument comes directly from Justice John Marshall Harlan’s lonely dissent in Plessy v. Ferguson, the decision that upheld Jim Crow segregation. Our Constitution is colorblind, and neither knows nor tolerates classes among citizens,” wrote Harlan, who would have struck down a Louisiana law establishing “equal but separate” accommodations on passenger railways. But there’s more to Harlan’s dissent than his most frequently cited words would lead you to believe. It’s not that segregation was wrong but that, in Harlan’s view, it was unnecessary.

US Senators are cracking down on money laundering via cryptocurrency in a new bill on Wednesday. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Roger Marshall proposed the bill titled "Digital Asset Anti-Money Laundering Act of 2022." The bill, titled "Digital Asset Anti-Money Laundering Act of 2022," could amp up know-your-customer (KYC) requirements in an effort to deter bad actors in the nascent space. If it becomes a law, wallet providers, cryptocurrency miners, validators, and mixers could be classified as money service businesses. Warren, who has been a long-time outspoken critic of digital assets, says that she wants the industry to comply with the same money laundering rules as traditional financial institutions.

Cuban laid out the issues facing the Mavericks' workplace on the phone, Marshall said.
