All three major averages posted gains for the third consecutive week, lifted by solid quarterly earnings and positive economic data. Earnings season ramps up next week, with five of the Super Six mega-cap stocks delivering results. Employment numbers are the most important economic data, with Friday's January nonfarm payrolls report carrying the most weight. The January ISM Manufacturing report on Thursday and December's factory orders report Friday are expected to show the sector still in contraction mode. But earnings and commentary this week from peer Sartorious made us encouraged about a return to growth in 2024.

Milei's dollar plans, however, put pressure on the embattled peso currency, which is held in check by strict capital controls. The official exchange rate is near 350 per dollar, but dollars trade well over twice that in popular parallel markets. Milei said in the run-up to the election he wanted to ditch the peso altogether in favour of the dollar. Milei had also heavily criticised China and Brazil in the runup to the elections, two of Argentina's main trading partners. China said on Tuesday it would be a "serious mistake" if Milei opted to cut ties between the two countries.

"Who is appointed...as central bank president and economy minister, and the details of an urgent economic stabilization plan without a majority in Congress, will be the key for asset prices in the days ahead." The Economy Ministry is always a hot seat, with Argentina a nine-time debt defaulter caught in a decades-long boom-and-bust cycle. Milei will take office on Dec. 10 after beating ruling Peronist coalition Economy Minister Sergio Massa. "Milei said that he is going to reorganize the central bank instead of imploding it or shutting it down. The new economy minister will have to negotiate a new programme with the IMF "relatively quickly" to avoid entering arrears with the fund, Morgan Stanley said on Monday.

Rising rates and the possibility of a recession on the horizon have created a "mixed picture" for equity markets, according to one strategist — but several companies can look forward to markedly stronger earnings growth in the next year. "But, if you're looking for significant earnings expansion, I suspect, at a market level, that's probably less likely. The earnings growth rate for the S & P 500 was 3.7% year-on-year – the first quarter with year-on-year growth since the third quarter of 2022, the data showed. "What Eli Lilly is going to do with their weight loss drug is not dependent on whether the rates are 5.2% or 4.8%. Although electric car giant Tesla (TSLA.O) comfortably beat second quarter profit forecasts, markets seized on plans for continued price discounting and squeezed margins as a reason to drag its shares down almost 4% in overnight trading. In the fixed income world, Treasury yields crept back higher ahead of next week's Federal Reserve meeting.

July 20 (Reuters) - MarketAxess Holdings (MKTX.O) reported a better-than-expected second-quarter profit on Thursday, as a bustling Eurobond market helped offset the hit from a decline in U.S. government bond trading. The New York-based bond trader reported a profit of $1.59 per share for the three months ended June 30, beating analysts’ estimates of $1.57 per share, according to Refinitiv data. MarketAxess is an electronic trading platform for institutional investors and broker-dealers to trade corporate bonds and other fixed-income products. That prompted Eurobond investors to keep rejigging their portfolios, boosting trading volumes for the segment by 30.2% in the second quarter. However, a 33.1% slump in trading volumes for U.S. government bonds proved a drag.

Corporate bond trading has entered its ChatGPT era. LTX, a corporate bond trading platform owned by Broadridge, Wall Street's omnipresent behind-the-scenes provider, launched a chatbot specifically geared toward answering bond-related questions. Marketplaces for trading bonds like MarketAxess, Tradeweb, and Bloomberg have doubled down on efforts to make trading electronic. Things are calmer now, but seven traders who spoke to Reuters, some heading rates desks at big global banks, said March's mayhem continues to reverberate, with fears of further volatility in traditionally stable bond markets muting activity. Investors rely on government bond markets to translate central bank interest rates into a stable benchmark for borrowing costs, from corporate loans to household mortgages. Yield shifts in government bond markets have become bigger - occasionally hitting 20 bps a day - since central banks started ramping up rate hikes last year to tame surging inflation. For some, March's turmoil is the latest sign of how post-2008 regulations constraining dealer balance sheets are affecting bond market functioning. Others noted markets were leaving behind an era of low volatility for good as rates rise.

Major trading platform CEO sees signs of a bond ETF revival
  + stars: | 2023-04-07 | by ( Sean Conlon | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
Demand for bond ETFs appears to be rising. According to MarketAxess CEO Chris Concannon, there are signs Treasury ETFs are on the cusp of substantial inflows. "We're about to see what I'd call [a] bond renaissance," the electronic-trading platform CEO told CNBC's "ETF Edge" this week. "The Fed is still taking action, so I would expect bond yields overall to remain relatively high and attractive." Meanwhile, it found corporate bond ETFs saw $6 billion in outflows in the first quarterLydon speculates the renewed interest is caused by investors losing faith in traditional 60/40 investment portfolios.
Concannon said that the digitization of fixed income ETFs across the equity market accelerates the opportunity for investors to trade and hedge in the underlying corporate bond market. "We see that electronic trading is in fact accelerating as more and more people adopt fixed income ETFs," he said. "We saw a super high volatility in both the equity market and the underlying corporate bond market, and all those fixed income ETFs sustained that volatility." Because electronically traded bond ETFs are exchanged instantaneously, the funds are able to lead the underlying bonds. "And so, the underlying corporate bond market is actually following that ETF market."
