At least 125 places from the West Coast to the Rockies have tied or broken all-time October heat records since the month began. It’s another reminder that extreme heat is no longer confined to the summer as the world warms due to fossil fuel pollution. “If we continue to warm the plant by burning fossil fuels, late-season heat waves like this will become much more common.”California has been at the epicenter of the extreme heat. The record-breaking heat began before the calendar flipped to October. Phoenix could reach two consecutive weeks of record-breaking heat as it remains stuck in it into at least midweek.

Wall Street's main indexes opened lower again on Thursday amid persistent worries that hostilities in the Middle East could escalate. It said it was trying, through these efforts, to regain major influence on Middle Eastern and Eastern Mediterranean gas sales, especially liquefied natural gas.

The Summary Boeing officials have made few public comments about the company's Starliner spacecraft over the last six weeks. Just over an hour after Boeing’s Starliner capsule made its uncrewed return to Earth, NASA convened a standard post-landing briefing to discuss the end of the tumultuous test flight. The capsule’s first crewed test flight, the mission was expected to last around eight days. The pair is scheduled to stay at the space station until February then return with members of an upcoming ISS crew. In 2019, an uncrewed test flight to the space station was cut short because of technical glitches and the company was forced to repeat it in 2022.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Opening statements were expected Wednesday in the federal trial of three former Memphis police officers charged with federal civil rights violations in the January 2023 beating death of Tyre Nichols. Police video released that month showed the five officers, who also are Black, beating Nichols as he yelled for his mother about a block from his home. The officers said Nichols was pulled over for reckless driving, but Memphis’ police chief has said there is no evidence to substantiate that claim. The three officers now facing trial, along with Martin and Mills, were fired for violating Memphis Police Department policies. They had been members of a crime suppression team called the Scorpion Unit, which was disbanded after Nichols’ death.

CNN —The fate of two NASA astronauts — who have been in limbo aboard the International Space Station for about 80 days because of issues plaguing their Boeing Starliner spacecraft — may soon become clear. The space agency routinely delays news conferences, however, if discussions take longer than expected. Still, the federal agency funded SpaceX’s Crew Dragon and Boeing’s Starliner at the same time in 2014. The United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket, topped by a Boeing CST-100 Starliner spacecraft, lifts off on an uncrewed test flight on December 20, 2019, in Cape Canaveral, Florida. If the Starliner capsule is ultimately certified, it could join SpaceX’s Crew Dragon in making routine trips to the space station to rotate staff.

How to increase your attention span amid digital overload

While a dwindling attention span is not due to a personal failing (despite individual variability) a majority of the time, experts say there are changes you can make to regain control over your mind. “Tech companies and ad marketing companies use this information to construct profiles about us, and then they design algorithms that are targeted to capture our attention,” Mark said. “We have a tank of attentional resources (that) gets drained when we keep switching our attention,” Mark said. Additionally, he suggested using an app that places time limits on social media or websites you find yourself addicted to using. “The way I feel at the moment is like somebody is pouring itching powder over us all day,” Hari said.

NASA this week has been discussing the possibility of returning Starliner empty and instead using SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spacecraft to return its astronauts. The Boeing crew flight was initially planned to last a minimum of nine days. NASA previously noted that SpaceX serves as a backup but has sought to deemphasize that possibility, calling Boeing’s spacecraft the “primary option” for return. Already, Boeing’s Starliner losses total more than $1.5 billion due to repeated setbacks and years of delays in developing the spacecraft. If NASA backs Boeing and returns Wilmore and Williams on Starliner, the agency is accepting a currently unquantifiable amount of risk.

New York CNN —Chevron is moving its headquarters out of California, the company announced Friday. The oil giant said it would be relocating its corporate offices from San Ramon, where they have been since 2002, to Houston. This will be the first time Chevron will be headquartered outside of California since its founding more than a century ago. Chevron chairman and CEO Mike Wirth and vice chairman Mark Nelson will move to Houston by the end of 2024, while other corporate operations will slowly relocate over the next five years. Chevron’s exodus from the Bay Area comes on the heels of Elon Musk’s announcement last month that SpaceX and X, formerly known as Twitter, would be relocating to Texas, as well.

Technical signals suggest downside is limitedThere isn't much evidence that poor-performing areas of the market, like small-cap stocks, have peaked, Newton said. Meanwhile, Treasury yields have fallen in recent months as traders anticipate Fed rate cuts, which is typically bullish for stocks, he added. Editor’s note: A version of this story appeared in CNN’s Wonder Theory science newsletter. Thousands of years ago, our ancestors produced the first maps of the stars and practiced alchemy, the precursor to chemistry. But ancient alchemists actually developed technology and discovered chemical elements that are still widely used today. Now, a new discovery links both astronomy and alchemy in one intriguing figure who lived during the Renaissance. They then fired the thruster to try out several ways the engines might fire on the way home from space, according to Boeing. Officials said they were able to recreate how the thrusters in space deteriorated during flight with the ground tests. Additional Starliner testingSeparately, engineers may have made headway understanding helium leaks that hampered the first leg of Starliner’s journey. “The key attributes of the flight rationale really are that we understand the helium leaks — we understand the stability of the leaks and how we can manage those, should they get bigger,” Stich said, referring to the possibility that helium leaks affecting the Starliner service module may worsen. NASA and Boeing plan to carry out a review to plan for Starliner’s undocking, which “could be as early as late next week,” according to Stich.

He was accompanied by a man who had pushed behind the scenes as hard as almost anyone to put him on the ticket in the first place: Donald Trump Jr. When they each deliver a prime-time address on Wednesday night, the moment will mark not only Mr. Vance’s national debut but the unquestioned arrival of Donald Trump Jr. as a political force to be reckoned with in his own right. CNN —Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft and its crew have been in space for more than a month — much longer than the weeklong stay initially expected. The pump’s failure “put us in a position where we’d have to store an awful lot of urine,” said Dana Weigel, manager for NASA’s International Space Station Program, before the flight.
