Meneses Maples refers to herself as an adult “glass child,” the sibling of a person with a mental or physical disability. How does a glass child disappear? It is important not to assume what the needs of a glass child are, said Missud, the New York psychotherapist. More than a decade after her TEDx presentation, Meneses Maples receives messages from parents of glass children seeking her advice. Meneses Maples said she hopes to inspire research on glass children by spreading the word through presentations and workshops.

The volunteer black walnut sapling in our front yard arrived courtesy of a local squirrel. I had to mark it with a little flag to make sure my husband didn’t mow over it by accident. The baby Eastern red cedars and the baby black cherries and the baby red mulberries were all planted by birds. (The baby willow oak and the three baby shingle oaks that appeared two years ago have already fed the rabbits.) This black walnut won’t reach full maturity for another 150 years or so, and that’s if no one cuts it down — a bet I would not take.

Matthew and Timothy Nichols’s story could be a case study of what it means to manifest something. The goal they realized: To amass an enviable collection of Japanese maples and establish a leading role in championing them. And they knew where they might learn at least some of it. The brothers, then 21 and 27, planned a pilgrimage to the 2009 Maple Society of North America conference in Oregon, which included a tour of Buchholz & Buchholz Nursery. They hoped to meet the nursery’s owner, Talon Buchholz, who had introduced some of the Japanese maple selections they most admired.

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) — Freshman JuJu Watkins scored a Southern California-record 51 points — the most in NCAA women's basketball this season — and the 15th-ranked Trojans upset No. Watkins hit six 3-pointers to help the Trojans (15-4, 5-4) send the Cardinal (19-3, 8-2) to their first home loss of the season. Watkins came in averaging 25.8 points and Hall of Fame Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer turned to freshman Courtney Ogden to try stopping her. Stanford star Cameron Brink had 19 points, 15 rebounds and eight blocked shots — swatting six shots in the first half. McKenzie Forbes added X points for USC, which had lost three of four since beating UCLA on Jan. 14.

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) — It never fails, Tara VanDerveer always takes a minute to thank everybody for coming to the game and that includes offering her immense gratitude to the Stanford band. “This is a tremendous accomplishment for Tara VanDerveer, who is already one of the most accomplished coaches in the history of basketball,” Krzyzewski said in a statement. Oregon State coach Scott Rueck credits VanDerveer for elevating the entire over the decades. Stanford: VanDerveer, who didn't have the playing opportunities growing up before Title IX, has considered herself so fortunate to get an early start in coaching at Idaho in 1978-79. She earned her 1,000th win Feb. 3, 2017, and became winningest women's coach on Dec. 15, 2020, by passing the late Tennessee coach Pat Summitt (1,098).

From Room 7, relieved to recover in warmth, I had a view of the property’s 30-foot red cliffs. Dozens of lobster buoys bobbed in the water, and a meadowlark sang out on the broad lawn. As at Points East, once I sat down, I had no desire to leave and was grateful for an inn with meals. Embracing solitudeFour days into the walk, I found my rhythm. A refuge from the modern worldIn the fall of 1870, four young bachelors from the Icelandic fishing village of Eyrarbakki landed on Washington Island. By the end of the century, the island had become a center of Icelandic culture. Washington Island is the second-oldest Icelandic settlement in America, and if you know where to look, I assured Mel, hints of that history still abound. Established in 1904 by Ben Johnson, another Eyrarbakkian, the colonial-style Hotel Washington now offers eight small guest rooms and two shared bathrooms above a farm-to-fork restaurant awash in natural light. Once the island’s social hub, the hotel retains an old-world feel, despite the updates.

NEW YORK, May 9 (Reuters) - Donald Trump must pay $5 million in damages for sexually abusing magazine writer E. Jean Carroll in the 1990s and then defaming her by branding her a liar, a jury decided on Tuesday. Its six men and three women awarded Carroll $5 million in compensatory and punitive damages, but Trump will not have to pay so long as the case is on appeal. Trump has cited the Carroll trial in campaign fundraising emails as evidence of what he portrays as a Democratic plot. TRUMP MISTAKES CARROLL FOR EX-WIFECarroll testified that she bumped into Trump at Bergdorf's and agreed to help him pick out a gift for another woman. Jurors were tasked with deciding whether Trump raped, sexually abused or forcibly touched Carroll, and were separately asked if Trump defamed Carroll.
The jury deliberated for just under three hours before rejecting Trump's denial that he assaulted Carroll. Trump has cited the Carroll trial in campaign fundraising emails as evidence of what he portrays as a Democratic plot to damage him politically. Jurors were tasked with deciding whether Trump raped, sexually abused or forcibly touched Carroll, any one of which would satisfy her claim of battery. Kaplan, Carroll's lawyer, told jurors during closing arguments on Monday that the 2005 video was proof that Trump had assaulted Carroll and other women. Previously Trump had said he could not have raped Carroll because she was "not my type."
Jurors were tasked with deciding whether Trump raped, sexually abused or forcibly touched Carroll, any one of which would satisfy her claim of battery. The trial featured testimony from two women who said Trump sexually assaulted them decades ago. Carroll's lawyer, Roberta Kaplan, told jurors during closing arguments on Monday that the 2005 video was proof that Trump had assaulted Carroll and other women. Carroll testified that she bumped into Trump at Bergdorf's while he was shopping for a gift for another woman. Trump has cited the Carroll trial in campaign fundraising emails as evidence of what he portrays as a Democratic plot to damage him politically.
Carroll receiving a monetary award from this trial hinged on whether the jury unanimously believed her claims against Trump. “For E. Jean Carroll this lawsuit is not about the money,” attorney Roberta Kaplan said during closing arguments on Monday. Trump appears the most agitated on the video when he denies Carroll’s rape allegation. Two friends that Carroll testified she told soon after the alleged rape testified about their recollection of Carroll’s account in 1996. Tacopina in his closing argument Monday also accused Carroll of fabricating her rape allegations to sell her book.
[1/3] E. Jean Carroll, former U.S. President Donald Trump rape accuser, arrives at Manhattan Federal Court for the continuation of the civil case, in New York City, U.S., May 8, 2023. U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan, who is not related to Carroll's lawyer, said he expected jurors to begin deliberating on Tuesday. "The truth is that E. Jean Carroll, a former cheerleader and Miss Indiana, was exactly Donald Trump's type," Kaplan, Carroll's lawyer, said during closing arguments. "Donald Trump here is a witness against himself." Jurors also heard from two other women who said Trump sexually assaulted them in separate alleged incidents decades ago.
Donald Trump told a female lawyer who was questioning him that he would never be interested in her. He made the comment after explaining that his rape accuser E. Jean Carroll was not his type. Trump was deposed for a rape and defamation lawsuit brought by Carroll. In the video, Trump denied raping Carroll and repeated his claim that she is not his "type." "I say this with as much respect as I can, she's not my type," Trump said.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump disembarks his plane "Trump Force One" at Aberdeen Airport on May 1, 2023 in Aberdeen, Scotland. The transcript of the deposition of former President Donald Trump by a lawyer for E. Jean Carroll, the writer who accuses him in a civil lawsuit of raping and defaming her, was released in a court filing Friday. The deposition, taken in October at Trump's Mar-a-Lago club in Florida, was filed a day after Carroll's lawyers rested their case at the trial for the suit in U.S. District Court in Manhattan. Portions of the transcript have previously been released in separate court filings. That's my wife," Trump said before his lawyer Alina Habba stepped in during the deposition to tell him, "No, that's Carroll," Habba said.
CNN —The video deposition of Donald Trump played before the jury in the E. Jean Carroll civil battery and defamation trial was made public Friday, showing the former president discussing the accusations against him, the “Access Hollywood” tape and the Russia “hoax.”The edited deposition runs for nearly an hour. In the video, Trump confirms that he made the allegedly defamatory statements denying knowing Carroll, calling her allegations that he raped her in a Bergdorf Goodman’s dressing room in the mid-1990s a “hoax,” and saying she is not his type. And many times during the deposition, he calls Carroll a series of names, including “nut job,” a “whack job” and “mentally sick.”Trump also mistakes Carroll in a black-and-white photo for his second wife, Marla Maples. In addition, Trump reacts to allegations from two other women – Jessica Leeds and Natasha Stoynoff. And, Trump rattles off a list of what he deems as hoaxes, including, “Russia, Russia, Russia, Ukraine, Ukraine, Ukraine.”
Donald Trump was deposed for a rape and defamation lawsuit brought by E. Jean Carroll. Under oath, Trump denied the rapeIn response to deposition questions by Carroll's attorney Roberta Kaplan, Trump continued to deny raping Carroll, as she alleged, and called her "mentally sick" and "not my type." In the deposition, Trump said he seldom purchased gifts for women he dated and denied that he publicly dated other women while married to Maples. AP Photo/John MinchilloTrump appeared to mix up various timeframes throughout the deposition video shown to jurors. Trump's attorney Joe Tacopina has said Trump will not testify in the Carroll trial, and rested the defense case on Thursday afternoon without bringing any witnesses.
Lawyers for E. Jean Carroll rested her civil case against Donald Trump on Thursday, shortly after jurors were shown a deposition video of the former president confusing the accuser with his ex-wife Marla Maples. "It's Marla," Trump said during a deposition for the case when shown a picture of him, Carroll and Carroll's ex-husband in the 1980s. The end of Carroll's case potentially paves the way for the trial to move to closing arguments on Monday. Asked if he was going to the trial, he said, "I'll probably attend," according to a Sky News video of his remarks. In the deposition, Trump also mocked two other women who've accused him of sexual misconduct: Jessica Leeds, a retired stockbroker, and Natasha Stoynoff, a former People magazine reporter.
On Tuesday, Tacopina said the 76-year-old Trump would not testify before the jury in U.S. District Court in Manhattan. Trump has not appeared in that court since the trial began last week. Carroll, 79, alleges that Trump raped her in a dressing room of the Bergdorf Goodman department store in Manhattan after a chance encounter with him there. Trump has also said he would not have even had consensual sex with her because she was not his "type." However, during questioning under oath by Carroll's lawyer for his deposition, Trump mistook Carroll for his former wife Marla Maples in a photo that shows Carroll and her then-husband John Johnson with Trump and his then-wife Ivana Trump.
