New York CNN —What constitutes “political” content? “Our goal is to preserve the ability for people to choose to interact with political content, while respecting each person’s appetite for it,” Mosseri explained. “Meta seems unable to define ‘political’ content,” Charlie Warzel, a staff writer at The Atlantic who covers the intersection of technology, politics, and culture, told me. Municipal bonds, favored for their tax-free income, are looking at a solid year in 2024 and could be a compelling purchase for investors hoping to lock in attractive yields. "We will likely see positive total returns," said Cooper Howard, fixed income strategist at the Schwab Center for Financial Research. "Munis are one of the best things going in the fixed income space," he said. It provides all the attributes of fixed income, and it serves as ballast to an overall diversified portfolio." Montana became the first state to authorize a complete ban on TikTok when lawmakers passed SB419 in April and Gov. US officials have said that Chinese government influence over ByteDance could potentially lead to US TikTok users’ data being exposed to Beijing — which might facilitate spying, blackmail or other espionage activity. Alexander Berengaut, an attorney for TikTok, responded by quoting Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen’s own past words about the ban that have characterized TikTok as an alleged agent of China. Ambika Kumar, an attorney representing the group of TikTok creators, said SB419 tramples on the First Amendment rights of consumers and of TikTok itself. Knudsen could have even gone on television to issue public service announcements warning Montanans not to use TikTok, Malloy suggested.

Income investors love municipal bonds for their tax advantages, but they may not necessarily be making the best choice for their portfolio. The interest earned on munis is generally exempt from federal income tax and, in some cases, state tax. That means a muni bond yielding 3.7% can reach over 6% on a tax-adjusted basis for those in the highest tax bracket. For instance, if muni bonds are yielding 3% and Treasurys are at 4%, the answer is 0.75. "If your tax rate is above that number, you should buy munis," Pate said.

“My personal favorite was Nikki Haley,” Sarcone told CNN of the former South Carolina governor after watching Wednesday’s debate at her Urbandale home in the Des Moines suburbs. Betsy Sarcone, right, watches the GOP debate with her parents Russ and Susan Sanders. To that end, these were the two biggest takeaways from our group: Haley made a strong impression, and Ramaswamy stirs an undercard version of the Trump GOP divide. “Some Trump people may have found that attractive about Ramaswamy, right?” Betsy Sarcone said. More than half of U.S. adults, 54%, said they think Trump should face criminal charges in that case, while 42% disagreed, according to the university's latest national survey, released Wednesday. The governor, who was just six points behind Trump in Quinnipiac's national poll in February, trailed the former president by 39 points in the survey released Wednesday. Quinnipiac surveyed 1,818 American adults between Aug. 10-14 in its latest poll, which had a margin of error of 2.3 percentage points. The polling period ended on the same day that Trump was hit with his fourth criminal indictment, this one related to his alleged scheme to reverse his loss in Georgia's 2020 election. Sixty-eight percent of respondents in Quinnipiac's poll said that if a person is convicted of a felony, they should not be eligible to run for president.

A GOP divide in Iowa over Trump -- and over the truth

Mudd does not dispute this but says he would have more confidence if states followed the same procedures. “Nothing about that deal is the American way, I don’t think,” Mudd Sr. says of the latest Trump indictment. And it vividly captures the country’s red state-blue state divide, which includes what you think of Trump and where you get your news. Taylor supported Texas Sen. Ted Cruz in the 2016 caucuses, but voted for Trump in November 2016 and again in 2020. Shopping around is an Iowa tradition, but both understand that a splintered field eventually helps Trump, as it did in 2016.

CNN —President Joe Biden is canceling his upcoming visits to Papua New Guinea and Australia due to the ongoing debt ceiling negotiations in Washington, the White House confirmed Tuesday. Biden will still travel to Japan starting Wednesday as part of what was supposed to be a weeklong trip through the Pacific region. Earlier Tuesday, National Security Council coordinator for strategic communications John Kirby told reporters that the White House was “reevaluating” the stops to Papua New Guinea and Australia. The cancellation canes as congressional leaders met with Biden at the White House to discuss the debt limit. The Treasury Department has warned that the government default could come as early as June 1, and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has said a default would trigger a global economic downturn.
In 2002, Jenny and Jon Steingart founded the Off Broadway incubator Ars Nova as a way of honoring Jenny’s brother, Gabriel Wiener, who in 1997 died of a brain aneurysm at the age of 26. Now, as the nonprofit theater is marking its 20th anniversary, the couple is facing another wrenching struggle: Jon has A.L.S., the severe neurological disorder also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. “Every painful experience in my life — if I have to live through it, I am going to come out on the other side with a lesson and a way to give back in some way,” Jenny Steingart said in a recent interview at their home on the Upper West Side. “Because a loss without some meaning behind it is really hard to live with.”So this anniversary, to be celebrated with a gala on Monday, also finds the Steingarts feeling great satisfaction, having created an institution that — in the wake of the 9/11 attacks — has played a crucial role in the professional development of so many artists. Among those who have worked at Ars Nova are Lin-Manuel Miranda, Thomas Kail, Christopher Jackson and Phillipa Soo of “Hamilton” fame; Bridget Everett, the actress and cabaret performer of the acclaimed HBO series “Somebody Somewhere”; and Dave Malloy, who created “Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812” at Ars Nova.

China also accounts for over 70% of global EV battery production capacity, meaning the U.S. is heavily dependent on imports of batteries and battery minerals. It estimates that the lifetime of an EV battery is around 12 to 15 years in moderate climates. The company now has over 400 employees and offers what it calls a "one-stop solution" for used and faulty EV batteries. The company wouldn't disclose the number of battery packs it's capable of storing but said it handles on average 15 thousand battery packs and modules per month. "When I think about the future of EV battery recycling specifically, I see it as an increasingly competitive space," Malloy said.
Ron DeSantis, who will likely start as the former president's top competitor in the 2024 Republican presidential primary if he runs, according to a poll of a potential GOP field released Wednesday. Quinnipiac University's latest survey of Republican and Republican-leaning voters found Trump winning 46% of support in a hypothetical GOP primary field, with DeSantis receiving 32%. That's a welcome change for Trump, who held just a 6-percentage-point lead over DeSantis in Quinnipiac's February poll of the prospective primary field. None of the 11 other candidates in the poll's hypothetical GOP primary field received more than 2% of the remaining support. Quinnipiac found that larger shares of registered voters have negative views than hold positive views of Biden, Trump, DeSantis, Pence and Haley.
The survey also found Biden's job approval among Americans sliding further into the red. But a plurality of Americans, 46% to 37%, do not think Biden should face criminal charges over the mishandling of those documents, Quinnipiac found. "Roughly two-thirds of Americans are aware of and troubled by the misplaced classified documents found in President Biden's home and private office. The questions about the classified documents had a margin of error of plus-or-minus 2.6 percentage points. For questions not related to Biden's handling of classified documents, Quinnipiac surveyed 1,659 adults between Wednesday and Sunday.
Chief amazement officers, chief heart officers, and chief empathy officers are popping up across companies. They also found that titles like chief people officer and chief happiness officer were gaining in use. If you thought home's where the heart is, think again, because the workplace now has a chief heart officer. Sometimes the chief heart officer exists in addition to the head of human resources, a role that is increasingly called, more humanistically, the chief people officer. Claude Silver, the chief heart officer at VaynerMedia and self-proclaimed "first chief heart officer," told Forbes in 2017 that she was "here to be of service" to her staff.
New Fannie Mae changes aim to make access to mortgage financing more equitable. But with these new changes, which allow mortgage lenders to use data from a borrower's bank statements to help establish creditworthiness, those who have no credit score may have an easier time qualifying for a mortgage. These changes only affect borrowers who have no score, meaning that those who do have a credit score will still be evaluated based on whether their score meets minimum requirements. Many of those who are credit invisible would otherwise be ideal borrowers, but because they don't have a traditional credit score, they often have trouble getting a mortgage. Just because you don't have a traditional credit score doesn't mean it's impossible to get a mortgage and purchase a home.
Just 31% of registered voters surveyed hold a favorable view of Trump, versus 59% who have an unfavorable opinion of him, the poll found. That's the lowest rating Trump has received since July 2015, shortly after he launched his first presidential bid, according to Quinnipiac. Trump's declining marks were even worse among independent voters, the poll showed. Majorities of registered-voter respondents told Quinnipiac they would not like to see Trump or Biden as a 2024 presidential nominee. Asked for comment, a source close to Trump noted that a recent Morning Consult poll showed Trump holding court as the frontrunner, backed by 49% of potential GOP primary voters compared with 31% who favored DeSantis.

Yes, life insurance is one answer, but it's life insurance with a twist. This little-known tax tool, which may be coming under increasing scrutiny, is called private placement life insurance, or PPLI. It is effectively a life insurance policy that is owned by an offshore trust.
The richest of the rich can use life insurance to avoid estate and income taxes. Life insurance is probably the least sexy area of financial planning. Private-placement life insurance is a little-known tax-avoidance tactic. When structured correctly, PPLI policies can be used to pass on assets from stocks to yachts to heirs without incurring an estate tax. Raphael Warnock of Georgia, still leads by seven percentage points, 52% to 45%, according to Quinnipiac University's latest poll of likely voters in Georgia. Quinnipiac's latest poll surveyed 1,157 likely Georgia voters between last Friday and Monday, days after the abortion scandal broke.
