CNN —Train enthusiasts and history buffs alike will soon have a new Southeast Asian destination to visit, as Vietnam prepares to unveil a revamped pair of vintage steam locomotives from the 1960s. The two Revolution Express locomotives are the last working steam trains in Vietnam, dating from when the country was still a French colony, according to hospitality brand Wafaifo Optimisers, which is managing the project. In recent years, the trains have been slowly restored to working condition using original parts, and crafted by the last remaining steam engineers working for the national railway system. Wafaifo & Revolution ExpressVietnam declared its independence from France on September 2, 1945 – a claim that neither France nor the United States recognized. By 1954, Vietnam signed the Geneva Accords – splitting the country into two halves, the Communist-led north and US-supported south, and kicking off the bloody Vietnam War, which would last nearly two decades.

CNN —A 12-string guitar played by Beatles stars John Lennon and George Harrison and thought to have been lost for almost 60 years is going up for auction. The acoustic Framus “Hootenanny” was used by the band in 1965, featuring in recordings, sessions and performances of songs including “Help!” “You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away” and “It’s Only Love,” according to California-based auction house Julien’s Auctions. After that, Lennon gave the guitar to a friend, who passed it on to someone “who took the guitar home, tossed it in the attic, and gave it nary a thought for decades,” the auction house said in a statement published Wednesday. “It has some distinctive markings which made it easily identifiable,” said the auction house, but “the real proof is in the sound.”Lennon pictured in December 1963. It is expected to set a world record for the most expensive Beatles guitar, the auction house said.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House Situation Room — a space of great mystique and even greater secrecy — just got a $50 million facelift. Behind that is the main conference room, known as the “JFK room." A room once taken up by computer servers has become a smaller conference room. That took place around the corner from the JFK room in a smaller conference room that no longer exists. While the area was closed for renovation, White House officials used other secure spots on the campus.

The plan's outlines were sketched out in a briefing last week by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who has vowed to end Amazon deforestation by 2030. Concessions could also be granted to generate other products, like oilseeds, fibers and resins, along with potential carbon credit schemes. The vast Amazon rainforest is a key buffer against climate change.

Browne, Lincoln Center’s first-ever poet-in-residence and an acclaimed author, to write a love letter to the genre, composed entirely of lyrics both oft recited and obscure. In the resulting interactive piece, which is full of stunning archival photography, we’ve annotated the lyrics with information about the artists, songs and their significance in the history of hip-hop. “Each of the audio clips represents a voice, a feeling, a moment in the 50-year evolution of the music. “From the start we knew the conceit was to use lyrics and this found poetry structure, but how does that look on the page?” Fang said.
