Johannesburg, South Africa CNN —South Africa’s apex court has ruled that former president Jacob Zuma is not eligible to run for parliament in next week’s critical general election. He was found guilty of contempt of court by the same constitutional court for his refusal to testify to an anti-corruption commission. It is that sentence that barred him from running, the court ruled on Monday. A contempt of court sentence is an extremely important sentence, and it is a sentence that cannot be treated lightly. While the court ruled that Zuma is not eligible to run for MP, his party will still contest the election and his face will remain on the ballot.

Former British Prime Minister Theresa May will not stand for re-election to parliament, she said on Friday, becoming the latest member of the governing Conservative Party to signal their departure from frontline politics later this year. London CNN —Britain’s opposition Labour Party, widely expected to win a general election due to be held within months, has lost one of its safest parliamentary seats to a pro-Palestinian former party member in a chaotic by-election. Labour initially stood by Ali, only to withdraw their support but too close to the by-election to put forward another candidate. Galloway was expelled from the Labour Party in 2003 after he opposed then Prime Minister and Labour leader Tony Blair’s support for the war in Iraq. Galloway’s victory is noteworthy for the context in which it took place, but doesn’t necessarily tell us much about the general election that will take place at some point this year. It does send a warning, however, to Starmer and the Labour Party about the need to properly screen candidates, as it could be badly hurt by similar stories emerging in the run up to the general election.

It's a stance that's certainly not lost on Norwegian lawmaker Marius Nilsen, who thinks the billionaire is worthy of the Nobel Peace Prize as a result.
