Tiffany beats profit estimates on soaring China demand
  + stars: | 2020-11-24 | by ( ) + 0.99   time to read: +1 min
Tiffany, which is being bought by French luxury giant LVMH, beat Wall Street expectations for quarterly profit on Tuesday as the U.S. jeweler benefited from an over 70% rise in sales in China and a recovery in demand at home. The results bode well for the upcoming holiday season for the jeweler and other luxury retailers in general, which have been hit hard by the pandemic. Tiffany said sales in the Asia-Pacific region rose 30%, while sales in the Americas region declined 16% - much smaller than the 46% drop seen in the preceding quarter. Tiffany forecast a mid-single-digit percentage decline in holiday quarter sales, while analysts had predicted a 3% drop. Excluding certain items, Tiffany earned $1.11 per share, surging past the average expectation of 66 cents.

(CNN) Zlatan Ibrahimovic continued his prolific form by scoring twice in AC Milan's 3-1 victory against Napoli on Sunday. The 39-year-old netted a trademark bullet header and a close-range volley either side of halftime to bring his impressive tally up to 10 goals in six league games this season. However, there was a sour end to AC Milan's night as Ibrahimovic left the pitch early after suffering a leg injury. "I don't have much information, he had ice on his thigh and we'll see in the next few days what the tests say," AC Milan's assistant coach Daniele Bonera told Sky Sports after the game. "He isn't someone who usually comes off the pitch."

Rome aims to clinch a merger with a healthier peer in 2021, the sources said, to secure a long-term solution for the bank, which is dogged by legal risks and poor quality assets. Monte dei Paschi (MPS) has said its capital buffers are set to fall below minimum requirements early next year, hit by the cost of a bad loan clean-up it is about to complete as well as provisions against legal risks following the conviction of former top executives. Italy’s Treasury and Orrick were not immediately available for comment, while Bank of America declined to comment.

French, Italian economies hurt most under second lockdowns
  + stars: | 2020-11-20 | by ( Leigh Thomas | ) + 0.00   time to read: +4 min
PARIS (Reuters) - Lockdowns in France and Italy are weighing down public mobility more than in other European countries, according to high- frequency data compiled by Reuters that suggest the two economies will take a correspondingly bigger hit. For comparison, mobility is around the same levels as seen in May. However, the drop is not as dire as in March and April with the new French lockdown allowing considerably more flexibility for companies and schools left open. Meanwhile, governments have largely spared their industrial sectors under the new restrictions, as the service sector bears the brunt of the fallout. While overall economic activity has cooled once again heading into the year end, some traditional indicators of economic health such as unemployment and bankruptcy filings are still not flashing red.

Breakingviews - Italian sovereign fund is a force to reckon with

MILAN (Reuters Breakingviews) - When Cassa Depositi e Prestiti (CDP) was founded 170 years ago this week, Italy did not yet exist as a nation. In just the past few months, the sovereign wealth fund has clinched deals to build large stakes in pan-European exchange Euronext, rising payments star Nexi and domestic developer Webuild. Excluding state-backed groups, most listed Italian companies are dwarves compared to European or American rivals. The Italian fund paid market prices when agreeing to inject 700 million euros into the Paris-listed exchange operator, along with Milan bank Intesa Sanpaolo. Board renewals at state-backed companies including Telecom Italia and Eni, and agencies like CDP, spark intense political horse-trading.

REUTERS/Rebecca Cook/File PhotoMILAN (Reuters) - Fiat Chrysler's FCHA.MI merger with Peugeot maker PSA PEUP.PA will include a loyalty scheme for long-term investors in the new group and help prevent future takeover attempts, the prospectus for the planned tie-up shows. In December, Italian-American carmaker Fiat Chrysler (FCA) and France’s PSA agreed to combine in a $38 billion all-share deal, uniting brands such as Fiat, Jeep, Dodge, Ram and Maserati with the likes of Peugeot, Opel, Citroen and DS. Such a move could concentrate Stellantis’ voting power in a small number of shareholders, making management changes and takeover attempts more difficult, they added. PSA and FCA have filed the merger plan with antitrust authorities in 21 countries and the European Union.

ET Mnuchin Defends Decision to End Emergency Fed Funds: Live Updates RIGHT NOW Steven Mnuchin denies politics played a part in his decision to end the Fed’s relief programs. “Congress trusted us with this money and we’re going to follow the law,” Mr. Mnuchin said on CNBC. “Whether it’s myself or somebody else, these can be reactivated,” Mr. Mnuchin said, referring to the Fed facilities. Mr. Mnuchin had little to say about any tension between the two men. By asking the Fed to return unused funds, Mr. Mnuchin could prevent Mr. Biden’s incoming Treasury secretary from quickly restarting the efforts at scale in 2021.

NEXU Science Communication/via REUTERSThe Italian researchers’ findings showed that 11.6% of 959 healthy volunteers enrolled in a lung cancer screening trial between September 2019 and March 2020 had developed coronavirus antibodies well before February. If those findings are correct, scientists said it could change the history of the origin of pandemic, raising questions about when and where the virus first emerged. Italy’s first COVID-19 patient was detected on Feb. 21 in a small town near Milan, in the northern region of Lombardy. The Chinese government said on Tuesday it believed the study showed that tracing the origin of the virus was an ongoing process that may involve many countries. “Our study does not suggest at all that 11% of Italians had COVID antibodies in September-October,” said Gabriella Sozzi, Director of Genomics Cancer at INT.
