There are many origin stories for the Frito pie, but at least one thing is true: This dish is extremely popular in Texas, where it is a staple at high school football games. Credit... Christopher Testani for The New York Times. Food Stylist: Simon Andrews.

On the possession that followed the Lions’ touchdown, the Chiefs stalled, punting with 5:07 left. And then drama turned to farce, as Mahomes’s receivers let him down and penalties pushed the Chiefs backward. Mahomes took the snap, rolled left and launched a throw that arced across the line to gain, reaching the fingertips of the receiver Skyy Moore, who couldn’t clasp it. On the air, Tirico said: “The Detroit Lions are right there.” In the truck, Hyland’s pronouncement was less circumspect. One measure of the success of “Sunday Night Football” is how “Sunday Night Football”-ish the competing broadcasts are looking.

The National Football League has long been a broadcast juggernaut, with its games accounting for 83 of the nation’s 100 most-viewed telecasts last year, according to the ratings firm Nielsen. But as the reach of traditional television wanes, and major live events like the Academy Awards and the World Series face historically low ratings, the N.F.L. is embarking on an ambitious strategy to try to maintain its dominance. “Quarterback,” an eight-episode documentary that followed Patrick Mahomes and others during his second M.V.P. season, was the most-watched series on Netflix for more than a week in July.

If completed, the Mountain Valley Pipeline will be a very large and long-lived methane delivery device. At the end of the line, the methane will be burned in power plants and furnaces, producing carbon dioxide. But now that wind, solar and battery storage are indeed quite ready and, in many places, cheaper than gas, the jig is up. Though the assertions that the pipeline is necessary and good for the climate defy logic, the political calculus is clear enough. Mr. Manchin was also a supporter of another large gas pipeline that would have originated in his state: the Atlantic Coast Pipeline, which I have been reporting on since 2019.

The bill includes some other small steps aimed at getting energy projects of all types approved more quickly by modifying federal permitting policies under the National Environmental Policy Act. But opponents of the pipeline argue that completion was far from certain as several court cases are pending. A provision in the debt deal could deem those challenges moot, and would block any future lawsuits. The agreement would order federal agencies to approve any outstanding permits for the pipeline within 21 days and exempt those permits from judicial review. “This is an unprecedented end run around the courts, which have repeatedly rejected permits over M.V.P.’s failure to comply with basic environmental laws,” said Ben Jealous, executive director of the Sierra Club, which has challenged several permits related to the pipeline.

Jim Brown Should Be Seen Fully, Flaws and All

That is what Jim Brown embodied. Brown, who died Thursday at 87, lived a life that became an ode to self-determination in the face of stinging racism. But we start here with Brown’s life in sports, for his career as an athlete was truly unique. In college at Syracuse, Brown dominated on the football field as few ever have. The second Black player in the history of Syracuse football, he became an all-American in football and lacrosse.
His rushing records — most notably his 12,312 yards on the ground — were eventually broken by Payton, Barry Sanders, Emmitt Smith and others. His 104.3 rushing yards per game average still stands as a league record. awards, and owning the N.F.L.’s career rushing record. “There isn’t a man who played running back in the NFL who didn’t see Jim Brown as an iconic legend on and off the field,” Tony Dorsett, one of 10 running backs to surpass Brown’s total rushing yards, wrote on Twitter. As exceptional as he was on the field, Brown was far from a perfect human being.
LOS ANGELES — Mookie Betts was returning from paternity leave, his car was stuck in Chicago freeway gridlock for what seemed like an eternity and he arrived at Wrigley Field late for that night’s game. The Los Angeles Dodgers knew in advance that Betts would miss the first pitch against the Cubs. And Manager Dave Roberts had put Betts on notice that once he arrived he was going to be playing shortstop for the first time in his major league career — and for the first time at any level in 10 years. So which was more harrowing for Betts, an All-Star outfielder and Most Valuable Player Award winner: the anxiety of being caught in traffic while the game was starting, or playing shortstop in the majors for the first time? Roberts, in his ninth season as the Dodgers’ manager, is known for his superhuman-like communication with his players.
What to Know About the 2023 W.N.B.A. Season

Griner played no basketball during her imprisonment and is still working to get back into game shape. The off-season was dominated by free-agent signings and trades that established what could be two superteams: the Liberty and the Las Vegas Aces. The Liberty made three key moves: First, they traded with the Connecticut Sun for Jonquel Jones, the league’s most valuable player in 2021. Then they landed one of the top free agents: Breanna Stewart, the 2018 M.V.P., who had won two championships in Seattle. Those three join the returnees Betnijah Laney and Sabrina Ionescu, who have each made an All-Star team.
The 2018 comedy “Book Club” had a simple, sturdy spine of a plot: Four longtime friends (Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen) power up their sexual prowess while panting over — and mocking — the best seller “Fifty Shades of Grey.” At some point during the brainstorming of “Book Club‌: The Next Chapter,” the returning director Bill Holderman and his co-screenwriter Erin Simms must have decided they could ditch the book gimmick. With a cast this beloved, who cares what they’re reading? This sequel opens with a formal quote from “The Alchemist” and, when pressed, mutters about how its author Paulo Coelho embraces fate. But that’s just a spaghetti-thin excuse to send the pals on a frenetic adventure through Italy with no time to crack open a paperback. Our close familiarity with the cast is the sole thing giving this fluff a sheen of emotional weight.
Tom Brady Retires: The Revised Edition

Tom Brady of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is retiring from football. His seven Super Bowl titles are more than any single organization has won. He was twice foiled in the Super Bowl by the New York Giants. Brady racked up yardage but Tampa Bay fired its offensive coordinator, Byron Leftwich. Look again, though, at the piercing final play from that game: A 30-yard Rams field goal, the ball snapped from the Tampa Bay 12-yard line.
