Oil edges up following U.S. rate cut move, geopolitical concerns
  + stars: | 2024-09-23 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
Oil prices gained slightly during early trade on Monday, boosted by concerns conflict in the Middle East may impact supply in the key producing region and expectations the U.S. interest rate cut last week will support demand. Both contracts rose in the previous session on support from the U.S. interest rate cut and a dip in U.S. supply in the aftermath of Hurricane Francine. Last Wednesday, the U.S. Federal Reserve cut interest rates by half a percentage point, a larger decrease in borrowing costs than many expected. Interest rate cuts typically boost economic activity and energy demand, but analysts and market participants are concerned the central bank may see a slowing job market. "Sentiment was buoyed by the Fed's rate cut amid hopes it can engineer a soft landing for the economy," said ANZ.

Over the past century, major chemicals companies like BASF, Dow and LyondellBasell have maximized a global manufacturing process that is derived from fossil fuels. Sparked by a chance medical school poker game conversation in 2016, Solugen evolved from prototype to physical asset in five years, and production hit commercial scale shortly thereafter. "Solugen is the first synthetic biology company with a demonstrated ability to scale both their sales and their own manufacturing," an investor told CNBC at the time of the 2021 deal. The Bioforge, as its manufacturing platform is known, is designed to minimize the massive environmental toll of traditional chemical manufacturing, and in a perfect world, result in carbon-neutral if not carbon-negative emissions. Bioforge 1, its Houston-based site, is a zero discharge facility without air or wastewater emissions.

Unlike the reaction to similarly decent results from some of its Big Tech peers this week, shares in the online retail giant Amazon climbed 5% after hours. And both Nasdaq and S&P500 futures were set to bounce into the weekend later after the cash markets closed at their lowest since May. With nominal U.S. growth running at close to 8%, depending on which inflation gauge you use, the heat is impressive. And even the racy headline GDP growth rate was below many assumptions of a 5%-plus print. That bond relief has perhaps flattered the overnight stocks bounce - although on aggregate the earnings season is pretty decent too.

Risky biotech M&A therapy will heal more fractures

NEW YORK, Oct 19 (Reuters Breakingviews) - How can a suitor offering $1 billion see eye-to-eye with a seller asking for $2 billion? Such contingent value rights, or CVRs, are a way to get around the inherent uncertainty of an unproven drug. Its $74 billion takeover of Celgene in 2019 included a $6.4 billion payout dependent on a trio of drug approvals. There have been only 27 biotech market debuts this year, raising $2.2 billion, according to LSEG data. Given the nagging fissures in valuation perspectives, however, more dealmakers are apt to try this risky M&A therapy.

Now is the time to buy the dip in chemical company Dow Inc. , says JPMorgan. "We think the recent downward movement in equity values has given investors an opportunity to purchase Dow shares at a reasonable valuation," analyst Jeffrey Zekauskas wrote in a Monday note. Shares of Dow, which serves as a holding company for Dow Chemical and its subsidiaries, have lost 7.9% this month and 0.3% in 2023. The analyst said Dow has underperformed chemical company LyondellBasell this year and over the past 12 months because of its dividend. Dow's dividend is flat, while Lyondell's dividend has increased by 19% since February 2021, according to the note.

But Mahaffy's research found that it is not necessarily because companies have leaned away from socially conscious strategies. Instead, she pointed a growing use of the term "sustainability," as well as other words like "climate" or "decarbonization" that fall under the ESG umbrella. It comes at a time when ESG has become increasingly fraught in the political sphere. Mahaffry noted that areas like the U.S. where ESG has received the most scrutiny have seen the biggest drops in use of the term on earnings calls. On WestRock's earnings call earlier this month, Sewell told listeners: "This is just one example of many of how WestRock's unique capabilities position us for growth."

[1/2] A smartphone with a displayed Intel logo is placed on a computer motherboard in this illustration taken March 6, 2023. But the dramatic re-acceleration of Big Tech stocks this week - where the NYFANG+TM (.NYFANG) index of the top 10 Big Tech stocks is now up 37% so far this year - is competing with multiple macro narratives that are increasingly hard to read. With the Fed meeting in view, the release of March PCE price inflation data later on Friday tops the diary. Wall St stock futures fell back 0.4% after a wild ride in Amazon.com shares overnight. With much of Europe and Asia closed on Monday for the May Day bank holiday, Asia bourses advanced in Wall St's slipstream but Europe retreated sharply on some jarring corporate updates.

Morning Bid: Runaway Tech arrested
  + stars: | 2023-02-03 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +5 min
The coast may be clearing on interest rates but a spluttering economy still has the power to check runaway stock markets. Friday's release of January's U.S. employment report will provide some clues - but Big Tech gave its own readout on Thursday. Apple earnings fell short of expectations and it forecast revenue would fall for a second quarter in a row. But even though iPhone sales fell for the first time since 2020, it said sales were likely to improve as production had returned to normal in China after COVID-related shutdowns. To what extent layoffs in the tech sector are fanning out across the economy will be monitored in the payrolls report later and the Fed will be watching wage growth like a hawk.
Investors will get another clue when the January jobs report is released on Friday. Economists predict that 185,000 jobs were added last month, a slowdown from the gain of 223,000 jobs in December and 263,000 in November. A further deceleration in the labor market would likely please the Fed, as it would show that last year’s rate hikes are successfully taking some air out of the economy. Along those lines, average hourly earnings, a measure of wages that is also part of the monthly jobs report, are expected to increase 4.3% year-over year. So far, tech earnings season is not off to an inspiring start, with Microsoft (MSFT), Intel (INTC) and IBM (IBM) all reporting weak results.
While only six companies in the Dow Jones Industrial Average are reporting next week, about 20% of the S & P 500 reports, making it the biggest week of earnings this season. The Dow and the S & P 500 gained 2.2% and 2.9% this week, respectively, while the Nasdaq Composite rose 4.7%. The Fed's meeting Tuesday and Wednesday comes amid a flood of corporate earnings reports, with about 20% of the S & P 500 reporting that week. The most important day for earnings is Thursday, when Apple , Alphabet and Amazon report after the bell. The Nasdaq Composite was up 11% for the month as of Friday afternoon, well ahead of the 6.2% gain in the S & P 500. Traders have been watching the S & P 500 edge closer to the key threshold of 4,100 , its high from December. AAPL 1Y line apple Apple is also important because of the signals it can send about the strength of the consumer, supply chains and China's reopening.
