Gavin Newsom said he's raising pay at his Panera Bread locations after it was widely reported that they'd be exempt from a new state law boosting the minimum wage. Greg Flynn, the franchise owner of 24 Panera Breads in the state, announced on Tuesday that he would raise the minimum wage at his locations from $16 to $20. This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers. Newsom and Flynn have known each other for years, and Flynn has been a longtime donor to Newsom's campaign, Business Insider previously reported. That connection brought Newsom under fire last week because the state's new law appeared to have a potential, specific exception for Panera Bread.

He owns 12 Panera locations in California. When asked last year about the bread exemption that baffled many, Newsom said, "That's part of the sausage-making," declining to elaborate further. Flynn, in a conversation with Bloomberg, denied having a hand in the bread exemption. A few smaller brands appear to benefit from the carve-out, including Paris Baguette and Great Harvest Bread Co, Bloomberg reported.

Despite the market's lack of direction this week, investors nonetheless poured into some specific stocks, pushing them into overbought territory. The RSI, which measures the magnitude and speed of price moves, is a popular yardstick used to evaluate whether shares are overbought or oversold. A stock with a 14-day RSI above 70 is considered overbought, signaling a possible selling opportunity. Biogen is another stock on the list that took a sizable drop this week, with shares tumbling more than 7%. But Wall Street anticipates a turnaround, with the consensus price target reflecting the potential for upside of more than 38%, according to FactSet.

It's common to stress over when we should tip and how much to tip, especially in America, where tipping is often expected for certain services. Customers might tip a server more if they smile, maintain eye contact, or stand physically close to the customer. "When they squat down next to the table, they're on the same eye level as the customer," Lynn said. "And the greater the social connection between the server and the customer, the better the tip the server's going to get," Lynn said.
