Beyoncé fans had spent the day racing from store to store, searching for their first cowboy hat or pair of white cowboy boots. They brought out the denim jackets lined with silver fringe, the brown and white cow print skirts and the silver rhinestones to stud just above their eyelid. Then on Friday night, they headed downtown to the famed strip of honky-tonks and bars on Lower Broadway in Nashville to listen to Beyoncé’s new album, “Cowboy Carter,” a tapestry of not only country music, but also contemporary pop music, funk and other genres. “I’ve never seen so many people that look like me in cowboy hats in my life,” Nia Blair, 24, marveled, dancing in her own pair of new boots. She added, “one album did all this.”

The reputations of these dealers helped cement the neighborhood as the center of the New York art world, though SoHo remained, in some ways, sparse. In 1996, the SoHo Grand Hotel opened on West Broadway (the Mercer would open the following year).

New Yorkers above a certain age remember the old Times Square. Peep shows, adult bookstores and live sex shows stretched on for block after block. When I started my freshman year at a college in Nashville, the city’s Lower Broadway was a miniature version of Times Square. Lower Broadway is so packed with tourists that locals steer clear — not because it is debauched but because it is just so darn crowded. And we can use our successes in Times Square, Lower Broadway and elsewhere as a conceptual legal model for reforming these virtual public spaces.

Claims that country singer Garth Brooks cancelled the opening of his new bar in Nashville, Tennessee, originated as satire, though some social media posts are missing that context. Posts online (here) shared an article by satirical website The Dunning-Kruger Times with the headline, “Garth Brooks Cancels His Bar’s Grand Opening After Investors Bail Out: ‘The Brand is an Embarrasment Now’” (tinyurl.com/3akkms5t). While Brooks has faced criticism since then, there is no evidence that he cancelled the opening of his new bar (tinyurl.com/38ye9uyp). The Dunning-Kruger Times describes itself as a “subsidiary of the ‘America’s Last Line of Defense’ network of parody, satire, and tomfoolery” (dunning-kruger-times.com/29-2/). These include other claims published by The Dunning-Kruger Times involving the backlash against Bud Light (here), (here), (here), (here).

Garth Brooks said his Nashville bar will serve "every brand of beer" in an interview with Billboard. His comments come in the wake of a conservative backlash against Bud Light. Sales of Bud Light dropped by 23% in May, per Circana data, and lost its crown as America's best-selling beer to Modelo Especial. The singer, who also owns a bar in Nashville, filmed himself using a rifle to shoot up multiple cases of Bud Light. Brooks' bar, called Friends in Low Places Bar & Honky Tonk, is set to open soon in a three-level building on Nashville's Lower Broadway.
