ATHENS, July 19 (Reuters) - Wildfires burned for a third day west of the Greek capital Athens on Wednesday, as authorities braced for a new heatwave stoking tinderbox conditions across the country. At first light, air water bombers resumed operations over the towns of Mandra, west of Athens, and Loutraki, close to the Corinth canal which separates mainland Greece from the Peloponnese. Firefighters worked throughout the night to keep flames at bay and away from a complex of coastal refineries. Dozens of homes were gutted and hundreds forced to flee towering flames which seared through hamlets on Tuesday. A year later, 101 people died in the seaside town of Mati, east of Athens, after a wildfire razed the town in a matter of hours.

Fire fighters managed to contain other blazes southeast and west of the Greek capital but the fronts were still active. A mayor told Greek television that more than 7,000 acres of land was reduced to ashes along a coast, where many Athenians have holiday homes. Greece still has memories of a wildfire disaster in 2018, when a blaze killed 101 people in the seaside town of Mati, east of Athens.

Greek television showed several houses and cars gutted by the blaze and thick white smoke billowing from burning vegetation. Nervous horses were moved away from burning stables to trucks in the nearby village of Kalyvia, Reuters footage showed. The Greek meteorological service has warned of a high risk of fire, just as the country is recovering from the first major heatwave of the summer.

Flăcările au distrus o pădure întinsă de pini situată la aproximativ 60 de kilometri vest de capitala Greciei, în apropierea staţiunii Loutraki. Vânturile puternice au îngreunat eforturile de stingere a incendiului, însă un purtător de cuvânt al pompierilor a declarat vineri dimineaţa pentru radioul de stat că "situaţia s-a ameliorat". Echipajele de pompieri au reuşit să stingă o serie de incendii mai mici în încercarea de a lichida incendiul principal, însă departamentul a observat că există încă riscul ca unele dintre acestea să se poată reaprinde.Până în prezent, autorităţile estimează că aproximativ 2.000 de hectare de pădure şi mai multe case din zona rurală au fost distruse.
