After growing up on the East Coast and living in New York City for years, I moved to Los Angeles. Other things threw me off, like LA's chill attitude toward alcohol and the slower pace of the city. Go to newsletter preferences Thanks for signing up! Things were growing a bit stagnant in my life, so I packed up and moved to Los Angeles in hopes of finding work in the film industry. As a lifelong East Coaster, here are the things that surprised me the most about moving to California.

“I strongly support clemency for Erik and Lyle Menendez, who are currently serving sentences of life without possibility of parole,” Gascón said in a statement. Erik Menendez and Lyle Menendez at a pretrial hearing in Los Angeles in December 1992. Lyle Menendez was 21 and Erik Menendez was 18 at the time of the killings. Attorneys for the brothers argued in clemency requests that they both were sexually abused by their father beginning at a young age. Those factors and their ages — Lyle Menendez is 56 and Erik Menendez is 53 — make each “an exemplary candidate for clemency,” the attorneys wrote.

NEW YORK — Shohei Ohtani is expected to play in Game 3 of the World Series, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts confirmed Sunday. Ohtani was expected to receive an MRI before Game 3 to determine the severity of the shoulder injury he suffered in Game 2 on Saturday. Roberts said postgame that Ohtani had suffered a subluxation, which is a partial dislocation, of his left shoulder. Through two World Series games, the Dodgers have secured a 2-0 lead largely in spite of Ohtani, who has hit 1-for-8 as the team’s designated hitter. Ohtani became the first player to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases in a single season with 54 and 59, respectively.

For Chinese imports, Trump has proposed an even steeper 60% tariff. Many economists have warned that tariffs planned by Trump will hurt global economic growth and drive up inflation in the US, as well as abroad if other countries introduce higher levies on US imports in response. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) also sees a hit to global gross domestic product from increased tariffs around the world, according to its latest World Economic Outlook. The output from a DNA sequencer is shown in this undated image from the National Human Genome Research Institute. But one reason the project may not have earned a Nobel Prize is the sheer number of people involved in the feat. The Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine will be announced on Monday, followed by the physics prize on Tuesday and the Nobel Prize in chemistry on Wednesday. The Nobel Prize for literature will be announced on Thursday and the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday.

Housing is one of many issues Vance, the Republican nominee, believes are rooted in the arrival of undocumented migrants in America. But many economists caution that connecting rising numbers of immigrants to housing costs is no simple thing. Other economists have noted links between immigrants and increased housing costs. Vance later shared two studies on housing and immigration that showed a link between increased immigration and rising housing costs — though each offered various caveats, including noting that the impact changes over time. Indeed, Zillow data shows a clear upward trend in Springfield rents this year compared with 2023.

The plaintiff’s lawsuit, which was filed in mid-September, prompted his accuser to fire back this week, opposing the celebrity’s efforts to stay anonymous. “Our civil court system is designed to resolve disputes and provide injured parties a means of redress,” Roe’s filing states. Doe said that Roe has attempted to extort him for millions of dollars through “untrue, lewd allegations” and “outrageous conduct.”“Defendant’s allegations are not true,” Doe’s lawsuit states. Doe’s suit asks the court to declare Roe’s sexual misconduct allegations untrue, pay compensatory and punitive damages and be prevented from further publicizing the claims. Here’s the deal: The East Coast port strike is getting a lot of attention for its potential disruption to the economy — which is precisely the point. No dockworkers means no bananas (or whatever), which means no profits for the companies that produce and ship them. While research shows automation has obvious benefits, like lower operating costs and fewer human-related errors, port automation does not, on its own, significantly improve performance, according to a 2018 McKinsey report. But automation anxiety is rapidly spilling over into office work, where managers are adopting AI in the hopes of replacing human work or amplifying production. As Washington Post columnist Heather Long wrote Tuesday, the strike is “an early battle of well-paid workers against advanced automation.
