John Warnock, a founder of Adobe Systems whose innovations in computer graphics, including the ubiquitous PDF, made possible today’s visually rich digital experiences, died on Aug. 19 at his home in Los Altos, Calif. The cause was pancreatic cancer, Adobe, which Dr. Warnock started in 1982 with Chuck Geschke, said in a statement. Until Dr. Warnock and Adobe came along, desktop printing was an arduous, expensive and unsatisfying endeavor. Dr. Warnock developed protocols that came loaded into desktop printers themselves, and that accurately rendered what a computer sent them. Adobe’s first such protocol, PostScript, went into Apple’s revolutionary LaserWriter, released in 1985, and within a few years it was the industry standard.

Steve Jobs' used Birkenstocks were auctioned for more than $200,000 on Saturday. Since then, the Birkenstocks have circulated through exhibitions across Milan, Berlin, and New York — but the price has definitely risen. While most vintage items are marked down in price for wear and tear, in the case of Jobs' Birkenstocks, the value was in the damage. While the hype around Jobs' Birkenstocks is due in part to his glorified status within Silicon Valley, the sandals might have fetched more money this time around because Birkenstocks themselves have skyrocketed in popularity. Margot Fraser, the German-American entrepreneur who founded the US arm of Birkenstocks, told Julien's that "he was interested in where the form comes from.
Employees' heads are reeling from the sheer scale of the layoffs, Insider reported Thursday. "People really didn't expect layoffs at that scale, even after the news," one employee who was spared from the layoffs told Insider. Those who didn't survive the layoffs are attributing them to Zuckerberg's poor leadership. A former recruiter at the company even said, "It took very poor leadership and mismanagement to get us in this position." One told Insider that the 38-year-old CEO "clearly appeared emotional" while addressing his new, downsized lot.
