Iranian journalists in London have experienced death threats, intimidation and online abuse. One broadcaster working for BBC Persian, the Persian language branch of the BBC World Service, which has its headquarters in London, had her car broken into, and her conversations with family members were tapped. And last month, Pouria Zeraati, a newscaster with Iran International, a Persian-language opposition TV channel that operates from Britain, was stabbed in the leg outside his London apartment. The three suspected perpetrators of that attack traveled to Heathrow Airport and left the country within hours, according to the Metropolitan Police Service, which is responsible for policing in London. But experts say these targeted incidents are part of a frightening pattern of physical attacks, threats, and surveillance that have become a reality for many Iranian journalists working abroad.

CNN —A London appellate justice refused former President Donald Trump’s request to appeal the dismissal of his case against retired British spy Christopher Steele’s company over his controversial 2016 dossier. Steyn also ordered Trump to pay £300,000 in legal fees to Steele’s company, Orbis Business Intelligence, which Trump requested to be stayed. In his order Wednesday, Lord Justice Mark Warby said Trump’s “appeal would have no real prospect of success,” finding that some of the presumptive Republican presidential nominee’s arguments were contradictory and his appeal attempted to offer new points that he didn’t present before Steyn. The dossier claimed that Trump conspired with the Kremlin to win the 2016 election and that Russia had compromising information on him. While the dossier was initially seen as credible due to Steele’s reputation, a series of US government investigations and lawsuits over the years discredited many of the claims.

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell says Berlin has shown “a lot of interest” in hosting a game as the league plans to extend its agreement to play in Germany beyond 2025. “Düsseldorf, Berlin — there’s been a lot of interest there — so I think they’re all possibilities, yes,” Goodell said Saturday. The NFL’s current deal calls for one game next season — it’s scheduled for Munich — and another in 2025, likely in Frankfurt. “We have every intention to continue to play here,” Goodell told the mostly German audience at a downtown hotel. An increasing number of women are choosing to undergo IVF and egg freezing treatments abroad. My gynecologist, who is the same age as me, told me it was a good time to consider egg freezing and I decided to give it a go. I thought I could make this into a positive experience — and get that negative connotations about egg freezing out of my head. My friends asked me how it was and they're considering egg freezing more seriously.

Ireland Says Goodbye to Sinéad O’Connor
  + stars: | 2023-08-08 | by ( Ed O Loughlin | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Floral tributes were piled on Tuesday in front of the former home of the Irish singer Sinéad O’Connor in the small coastal town of Bray, as thousands of mourners prepared to pay their last respects on the day of her funeral. Ms. O’Connor, who was found dead in her London apartment last month, had converted to Islam in 2018, and her family planned to give her a private Muslim burial on Tuesday. But, in accordance with an old Irish custom, her coffin will first be carried past her last home in Ireland, on the seaside promenade in Bray, just south of the capital, and the public has been invited to come there for a last farewell. Two days earlier, in the latest of a rolling wave of tributes, a creative agency had temporarily augmented a World War II territorial marker on nearby Bray Head to celebrate the late singer. Where once it said “Eire” — an old name for Ireland — to warn belligerent aircraft that they were approaching neutral Irish territory, the giant sign now says “Eire 🤍 Sinéad.”

I was singing, fired up by the thrilling energy of “Mandinka,” when I became aware of flashing blue lights. On Wednesday, Ms. O’Connor’s body was found in a London apartment. Auden wrote of Yeats, “Mad Ireland hurt you into poetry.” Cruel Ireland hurt Ms. O’Connor into song. She was furious that in a country that had supposedly fought for and won its freedom, women and children were so silenced and disempowered. She understood and had experienced pain, neglect and injustice and sang for those who also knew these things.

U.S. actor Kevin Spacey was found not guilty on Wednesday by a jury at a London court of committing historical sex offences against four men. The 64-year-old Oscar-winner was acquitted of nine charges, including sexual assault, causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent, and causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity. Spacey began to cry in the dock when the not guilty verdicts were returned by the jury. During the four-week trial at Southwark Crown Court, jurors were told by prosecutors that the actor had aggressively groped three of the men in incidents between 2004 and 2013 in Britain, when he was working at London's Old Vic theatre. The fourth said Spacey performed oral sex on him while he was passed out in the Hollywood star's London apartment.

London CNN —Oscar-winning actor Kevin Spacey has been cleared of all charges after a four-week trial in London on claims of sexual assault. Spacey thanked the jury after it cleared him following 12 hours and 26 minutes of deliberation across three days. The complainant said that one time, Spacey acted so forcefully it “took his breath away.” Spacey denied this ever happened. Spacey invited him to his London apartment two weeks later and sexually assaulted him, the man alleged. The complainant alleged that he had been drugged by the actor, and said he woke up to Spacey performing a sexual act on him.

The cofounder of Stability AI dumped his stake for $100 just months before the company hit a $1 billion valuation. The firm has sought a $4 billion valuation more recently, and Hodes' shares would have been worth over $500 million on that basis, he said in a lawsuit. The cofounder of artificial-intelligence startup Stability AI took a massive notional loss — when he dumped his 15% stake for a mere $100 just months before the company hit a $1 billion valuation. The suit is "without merit" and Stability AI will "aggressively defend our position," the company said in emailed comments. The accusers have said the 63-year-old had aggressively groped them or in one case performed oral sex while the complainant was passed out, with the prosecution describing him as a sexual bully. Spacey likewise said he could not remember the second accuser, an aspiring actor, who says he woke in the actor's London apartment to find he was being assaulted. "I'm certain that I did not attempt to perform oral sex on anyone who fell asleep in my apartment," Spacey's statement said, adding he had never performed oral sex on anyone who had not consented. His statement also said the man's lawyers had contacted him seeking a payment of more than 450,000 pounds. Spacey told police he was "baffled and deeply hurt" that the final accuser, a driver who says Spacey groped him about 12 times, had made his claims.

Apple loses London appeal in 4G patent dispute with Optis
  + stars: | 2023-07-04 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
LONDON, July 4 (Reuters) - Apple Inc (AAPL.O) infringed two telecommunications patents used in devices including iPhones and iPads, London's Court of Appeal ruled on Tuesday, dismissing the tech giant's appeal in a long-running dispute with a U.S. patent holder. Texas-based Optis Cellular Technology LLC sued Apple in 2019 over its use of patents which Optis says are essential to certain technological standards, such as 4G. London's High Court ruled last year that two of Optis' 4G patents were so-called standard essential patents and that Apple had infringed them. Apple appealed against that decision in May, arguing that the two patents in issue were not essential to 4G standards and that it had not infringed the patents. Apple and Optis did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

REUTERS/Suzanne PlunkettLONDON, May 10 (Reuters) - ASOS (ASOS.L), Britain's one-time poster child for the shift to online fashion retailing, swung to a first half loss, hurt by a squeeze on household budgets and elevated product returns but said it was confident of a return to profit in the second half. Shares in ASOS have halved over the last year, with some analysts fearing it may need to raise further equity. ASOS ended the half with cash and undrawn facilities of 408.6 million pounds. Assuming no improvement to the external trading environment, it forecast a "low double-digit" decline in second half sales but with core earnings of 40-60 million pounds, reflecting its focus on profitable sales.
