“It’s a bit like God’s waiting room.”But Clacton is the front line of Britain’s migration debate. The Reform leader uses divisive language on migration, warning supporters of what he calls an "invasion" of asylum seekers. Despite years of tough rhetoric and policies aimed at deterring the arrival of asylum seekers – devised largely to placate Farage’s supporters – Britain’s asylum system is creaking. Laws prevent most asylum seekers from working, so while taxpayers fund their accommodation, they cannot contribute formally to the economy. That could widen even further the chasm in understanding between his voters and Britain’s asylum seekers, experts fear.

Opinion: European soccer’s latest racism row
  + stars: | 2024-06-16 | by ( Opinion Keith Magee | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +9 min
CNN —On Sunday, England will face Serbia in its first game of the Euro 2024 championship, hosted by Germany. Since then, the FA, the European football association UEFA and FIFA , the sport’s international governing body, have visibly upped their anti-racism game. One might conclude, for instance, that Monday’s court decision in Spain meting out prison sentences to three Valencia fans for hurling racial insults, is evidence of European soccer’s new, tougher line against racism. Saka knows UEFA observers will be on duty at every Euro 2024 match and will be on the lookout for racist incidents. I see it as an attempt by professionals who should know better to make a Black player carry the can for a disappointing performance by the whole team.

The publisher and incoming editor of The Washington Post used fraudulently obtained phone and company records in newspaper articles as journalists in London, according to a former colleague, the published account of a private investigator and an analysis of newspaper archives. Will Lewis, The Post’s publisher, assigned one of the articles in 2004 as business editor of The Sunday Times. Another was written by Robert Winnett, whom Mr. Lewis recently announced as The Post’s next executive editor. The use of deception, hacking and fraud is at the heart of a long-running British newspaper scandal, one that toppled a major tabloid in 2010 and led to years of lawsuits by celebrities who said that reporters improperly obtained their personal documents and voice mail messages. Mr. Lewis has maintained that his only involvement in the controversy was helping to root out problematic behavior after the fact, while working for Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation.

It's a trend that emerged quickly after Taylor Swift began touring with her blockbuster The Eras Tour last spring. AdvertisementIn my case, it was because I happened to find myself in the same city as The Eras Tour and had a free evening. Amanda, 40, who had traveled from the US with her daughter Maddie, 20, were due to attend the second UK concert the following day. Amanda and her daughter Maddie were among Swifties who showed up to "Taylor-gate" as the UK leg of The Eras Tour kicked off on June 7. AdvertisementBut if "Taylor-gating" is your only opportunity to experience The Eras Tour — which Swift has confirmed will not extend past its final date in December — I would recommend it.

Crowds gathered in central London to watch as the princess and her family participated in an event full of military tradition, music and pageantry, dampened only slightly by a light rain. “I am making good progress, but as anyone going through chemotherapy will know, there are good days and bad days,” Catherine, 42, said in a statement released to the media. “On those bad days you feel weak, tired and you have to give in to your body resting,” she added. “But on the good days, when you feel stronger, you want to make the most of feeling well.”

London CNN —Catherine, Princess of Wales is to take part the Trooping the Colour celebration on Saturday - the King’s official birthday parade - in what will be her first public appearance since revealing her cancer diagnoses. The Princess of Wales - also known as Kate - will watch the rest of the parade with her family nearby, and is expected to join fellow royals on the balcony. The event - one of the highlights of the royal calendar - is a tradition marking the official birthday of the British sovereign for more than 260 years. It began, seemingly, with a few innocuous social media posts comparing Mike Faist, co-star of the titillating tennis throuple film “Challengers,” to a dormouse. No, he’s Stuart Little, if Stuart Little was hot. “How ‘hot rodent’ men became Hollywood’s sexiest heartthrobs: Gen Z fans are going wild for actors with unusual features including Barry Keoghan, Kieran Culkin and Jeremy Allen White,” read the headline. How do these men — heartthrobs of the moment, even — feel about being categorized as “hot rodents”? “It was clearly not meant as an insult and even though some people would take it as an insult, I mostly felt it was a way of saying that I was cute.”While by no means exhaustive, these responses suggest men feel mostly fine with the “hot rodent” trend.

Jordan Bardella, President of the National Rally (Rassemblement National), a French nationalist and right-wing populist party, speaks to over 5,000 supporters on June 9th, at Le Dôme de Paris. French stocks plunged on Friday, with the country's blue-chip index heading for its worst week in more than two years, as investors weigh a potential far-right victory in the upcoming parliamentary elections. A volatile week kicked off in French politics, as President Emmanuel Macron called a snap election last Sunday. The president's decision came after the far-right National Rally party won a historic 31.37% of the French vote for the European Parliament, more than double the 14.6% won by Macron's own Renaissance party. The French leader has since said that he will not step down as president if National Rally makes significant gains in the French legislature, handing them control over economic policy and other domestic issues.

With picture-postcard villages, country pubs and an unmistakable air of affluence, there are few greater strongholds for Britain’s Conservative Party than Surrey, where voters have chosen Jeremy Hunt, the current chancellor of the Exchequer, as a lawmaker in five consecutive elections. But even he admits that he may be out of Parliament after July 4. “I’m very well known locally, I’m knocking on doors, I’m talking to people and I’ve got a certain following from my 19 years as a member of Parliament,” Mr. Hunt told The New York Times last week as he prepared to appeal for votes in Chiddingfold, 50 miles southwest of London. “But this is definitely the toughest it’s ever been.”The fact that the second most powerful man in the government now sees himself as the underdog is testament to the scale of the threat facing the Conservatives at next month’s general election. Angry at economic stagnation, the impact of Brexit and a crisis in public services after years of government austerity, traditional Tory voters are deserting the party in the prosperous English districts that have long provided its most reliable support.

Taylor Swift performs on stage during during "Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour" at Anfield on June 13, 2024 in Liverpool, England. LONDON — Taylor Swift's record-shattering Eras Tour is continuing to supercharge consumer spending as it enters it U.K. leg, suggesting that the Bank of England may not be out of the woods yet in its fight against inflation. The Bank of England is expected to soon begin lowering its Bank Rate from a 16-year high of 5.25%, with all but two of 65 economists polled by Reuters anticipating a cut in August, while financial markets are pricing in September. However, a possible clash between one of Swift's August tour dates and a key inflation index day could skew the data enough to make the bank rethink its path, the analysts said. "A surge in hotel prices then could be material, temporarily adding as much as 30bps to services inflation (+15bps on headline)," Krishnan and Rossiter wrote.

Emma D’Arcy, Master of ‘Dragon’
  + stars: | 2024-06-14 | by ( Simran Hans | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
On a recent morning in London, the British actor Emma D’Arcy was dealing with “an emergency.”D’Arcy was in a studio, rerecording voice-over as Rhaenyra Targaryen for the second season of HBO’s hit “Game of Thrones” prequel, “House of the Dragon.” It was the fourth time the actor, who uses they and them pronouns, had recorded this particular bit of dialogue, and each time they were confronted by an enormous screen showing their face, surrounded by unfinished special effects. It was like a rather brutal “Groundhog Day,” they said, adding wryly that “the process of repression happens very quickly when you’ve got a job to do.”As the breakout star of “House of the Dragon,” which returns for its second season on Sunday, D’Arcy, 31, has had to adjust to seeing their image blown up. “Emma is literally the face on the poster,” Ryan Condal, a “Dragon” creator and showrunner, said in a phone interview, adding that he couldn’t imagine what it must be like “taking that on but also still being an artist, and a serious student of the craft.”D’Arcy has been grappling with this tension since “Dragon” first aired in 2022, when it became the most-watched premiere in HBO’s history. Set approximately 200 years before “Game of Thrones,” the show centers on the Targaryen dynasty before its dramatic fall. D’Arcy’s headstrong dragon rider, Rhaenyra, who must defend her claim to the Iron Throne, quickly emerged as a fan favorite.
