In “Becoming Karl Lagerfeld” he is brooding, combative and ambitious, sure — but we are equally encouraged to root for him. Despite Dietrich’s protestations, the creators of “Becoming Karl Lagerfeld” seem to side with their muse. Parisian fashion in the 1970s was, “Becoming Karl Lagerfeld” suggests, a scene broadly gatekept by a handful of squabbling men. "Becoming Karl Lagerfeld" intends to plunge the viewer into the heart of 1970s Paris, Monaco and Rome, to "follow the formidable blossoming of this complex and iconic personality," say the show notes. “Becoming Karl Lagerfeld” is, stylistically, a luxurious tribute to ‘70s flair: gorgeous to look at and offering an aggressively humanized look at some of fashion’s biggest names.

CNN —“Fragile Beauty” is an exhibition of extremes. The new show of “Photographs from the Sir Elton John and David Furnish Collection” at London’s Victoria & Albert museum (V&A) is at turns glitzy and gritty; joyfully pop and heart-wrenchingly poignant. “‘Fragile Beauty’ was chosen by Elton. Photography as a visual journalOne section, too, is titled “Fragile Beauty”, featuring work by Mapplethorpe, Hujar and McGinley. Elton even features in some of his own collection, as shown in David LaChapelle's "Elton John, Egg On His Face," 1999.

Even for someone who loves getting lost in museums — especially “everything museums” like the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York — London’s Victoria and Albert Museum might have been my Waterloo. The V&A typically draws around 3 million annual visitors, but even on the busiest days, the museum has the space and setup to largely avoid the sense of competing with the crowds. Since visiting the permanent collection is free (some exhibitions cost up to 20 pounds, or about $25), once you’re in the door you can just start wandering. Step right for medieval mosaics and Renaissance tapestries or go deep for 1940s Paris fashion, Baroque sculpture and, beyond that, Buddhist art. It’s easy to spend an entire day in the V&A.

(CNN) — There’s a lot of talk about luxury’s rising prices, but it’s at auction that fashion is selling for the most eye-popping of sums. Fashion items from the sets of TV, film and even commercials can also garner high prices. Frank Augstein/APWhile selling prices are widely publicized, auction houses maintain something akin to attorney-client privilege when it comes to the identities of their bidders. In fact, much of the archival fashion seen on stars today has passed through auction. “That dress would now sell for $10 million because of that double whammy connection of a celebrity,” said Nolan.

London CNN —The British Museum is facing renewed calls to return a huge moai statue to Easter Island, sparked by a social media campaign by Chilean activists. “Comments were only deactivated on one social media post,” a museum spokesperson told CNN in a statement Monday. The social media campaign is the latest stage in efforts to get it back to Easter Island. A museum spokesperson told CNN that other initiatives involving representatives from Easter Island had taken place at the British Museum in 2022 and 2023. The British Museum, like other cultural institutions across the Western world, is facing calls to return many artifacts to their place of origin.

‘Owning a piece of happiness’The first moon jars were created in the royal kilns in Gwangju (a city just outside Seoul, not the larger southern city of the same name) from 1650 to 1750. A modern-day moon jar made by South Korean potter Kwon Dae Sup, who said: "To appreciate a moon jar properly, you should look beyond its simple shape. CNN —Princess Diana left behind a vast style legacy, and soon enthusiasts will be able to bid for one of her most famous looks. The celebrated “black sheep” sweater first worn by Lady Diana Spencer at a polo match in 1981 when she was engaged to the now King Charles III will headline Sotheby’s Fashion Icons auction in New York and online between August 31 and September 14. The sweater will be on display at Sotheby's in New York at the start of Fashion Week on September 7. Artists Sally Muir and Joanna Osborne and their knitwear label Warm & Wonderful created the knitted, bold-red, wool crew neck, which is adorned with rows of white sheep and one black sheep on the front, in 1979. In the photograph, the lone black sheep appears to be on a higher row of white sheep on the new sweater than on the original.
