Jenna Starr stuck a blue Post-it Note to her monitor a few months after getting her M.B.A. from Yale University last May. “Get yourself the job,” it read. It wasn’t until last week—when she received a long-awaited offer—that she could finally take it down.

Why Is Everyone So Unhappy at Work Right Now?
  + stars: | 2023-11-27 | by ( Vanessa Fuhrmans | Lindsay Ellis | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
Americans, by many measures, are unhappier at work than they have been in years. Despite wage increases, more paid time off and greater control over where they work, the number of U.S. workers who say they are angry, stressed and disengaged is climbing, according to Gallup’s 2023 workplace report. Meanwhile, a BambooHR analysis of data from more than 57,000 workers shows job-satisfaction scores have fallen to their lowest point since early 2020, after a 10% drop this year alone.
Top Business Schools Are Enrolling More Women Than Men

George Washington University encourages female M.B.A. students to talk about their experiences to applicants. Photo: Rosemarie Mosteller/AlamyWomen now make up at least half of full-time M.B.A. students at five top business schools, the most to reach that milestone in a given year, new data show. The rising share of female M.B.A. candidates reflects business schools’ concerted efforts to recruit more women in recent years. Full-time M.B.A. programs at Penn State University and the University of Oxford hit parity for the first time this academic year. They join those at George Washington University, Johns Hopkins University and the University of Pennsylvania, according to the Forté Foundation, a nonprofit focused on advancing women into leadership roles via access to business education.

The reverberations of the Israel-Hamas conflict are playing out loudly everywhere in life—except at work. The muted discussion is a sharp turn from the forceful statements and candid conversations that companies organized after #MeToo, George Floyd’s murder and anti-Asian attacks of recent years. This time, employees on many sides of the issue are criticizing their companies’ responses as tepid or tardy, and saying they feel as though leaders want to avoid the subject.

Govind Gnanakumar was in diapers when Mark Zuckerberg dropped out of Harvard. Like the Meta founder, he won’t wait for a university diploma to start his business. The 19-year-old dropped out of the Georgia Institute of Technology in May to focus full time on his artificial-intelligence startup, Automorphic. He is among a swarm of teenagers and 20-somethings leaving college behind to capitalize on a gold rush in AI.

For a Good Job by 30, Do This in Your 20s
  + stars: | 2023-05-02 | by ( Lindsay Ellis | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
Skepticism about the value of college is growing, but earning a four-year degree by your mid-20s is the surest route to a good job by age 30. That is a key takeaway from a new analysis by Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the Workforce that aims to identify the paths that bring people to good jobs. The findings are important as companies, individuals and families are trying to better understand how college degrees affect career outcomes.
More workers are turning to their employers’ benefits to pay down their student loans. Companies big and small are adopting and expanding debt-repayment benefits for employees, many of whom will be required to restart loan payments later this year after a lengthy pandemic pause.
McKinsey, Bain Delay Some M.B.A. Start Dates to 2024
  + stars: | 2023-04-18 | by ( Lindsay Ellis | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
McKinsey & Co. told students that they will learn their start dates with at least two months’ notice. Consulting giants McKinsey & Co. and Bain & Co. are delaying start dates for new M.B.A. hires, or in some cases paying them thousands of dollars to put off starting their jobs. Consulting firms are among the biggest recruiters of business-school talent. Delaying the start dates for so many fresh grads is causing anxiety on campuses and suggests these businesses may have wider concerns about the economy.
