The Colbert County Sheriff’s Office in Alabama is asking the FBI to investigate a case involving a Black man whose body was found hanging in an abandoned home amid claims from his wife that his death was made to look like a suicide. The sheriff’s office requested the FBI's involvement in the death of 39-year-old Dennoriss Richardson, whose body was found in September, according to The Associated Press. The sheriff's office did not immediately respond Saturday to a request for comment from NBC News. "The FBI is aware of the tragic death of Dennoriss Richardson and takes allegations of federal law violations seriously," the FBI said in a statement. Colbert County Sheriff Eric Balentine said, according to AL.com, that police spoke to other family members of Dennoriss Richardson who said he had been depressed.

Picture Books That See Shadows in a New Light

Which is why it’s so refreshing to find two picture books that present shadows for what they are: the non-nefarious interplay of light and dark. Ultimately, her shadow is joined in a meadow by those of two other children and a dog (the four of them now “friendly” shadows). It is in the presence of harsh light — rather than the depths of darkness — that the story turns somber. It was a thinking shadow, a shadow you could feel but not see. Feng’s soft-lined illustrations visually articulate the essence of Handy’s “stretching shadows,” easing day into night.

(CNN) — There’s a lot of talk about luxury’s rising prices, but it’s at auction that fashion is selling for the most eye-popping of sums. Fashion items from the sets of TV, film and even commercials can also garner high prices. Frank Augstein/APWhile selling prices are widely publicized, auction houses maintain something akin to attorney-client privilege when it comes to the identities of their bidders. In fact, much of the archival fashion seen on stars today has passed through auction. “That dress would now sell for $10 million because of that double whammy connection of a celebrity,” said Nolan.

A new CNN documentary releasing on Thursday sheds light on the strained, complex relationship between former NFL player Michael Oher and the Tuohy family. This narrative is captured in “The Blind Side,” which followed a 2006 book of the same name by Michael Lewis. Oher sits on the beach during an NFL game between the Baltimore Ravens and the Buffalo Bills in 2010. A Tennessee judge terminated the Tuohy’s conservatorship over Oher in September. Tuohy sold his company for $220 million.” Oher declined to be interviewed for the CNN documentary, citing pending litigation, while the Tuohy family also declined an interview.

Oher’s petition says soon after he moved in with the family in 2004, the Tuohys gave him legal papers he thought were necessary for the adoption. Conservatorship was the tool chosen to accomplish this goal.”“There was never an intent to adopt him,” the Tuohy’s response states. The Tuohys say it is “demonstrably false” that Oher only found out in February 2023 that he wasn’t adopted. The Tuohys say all the money received from “The Blind Side” movie has been split equally between Sean and Leigh Anne, their two children and Oher – 20% each. The Tuohys said Oher’s share was paid to them, they paid the taxes for a period of time but wrote Oher a check for his full 20% share.

Lawyers representing the couple also said the Tuohys would enter into a consent order to end the conservatorship. But Oher’s conservatorship was approved “despite the fact that he was over 18 years old and had no diagnosed physical or psychological disabilities,” his petition said. The Tuoys' filing said Oher referred to them as “mom” and dad," and they occasionally referred to Oher as a son. Agents negotiated a small advance for the Tuohys from the production company for “The Blind Side,” based on a book written by Sean Tuohy’s friend Michael Lewis, the couple’s lawyers have said. The attorneys said they estimated each of the Tuohys and Oher received $100,000 apiece, and the couple paid taxes on Oher’s portion for him.

In August 2004, Michael Oher was living with Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy and their two children in Memphis. Oher, who had bounced around several foster homes, was a top prospect to play major college football and seemed headed to the N.F.L. Because the Tuohys were not Oher’s parents, providing support to him could have been seen as breaking N.C.A.A. As significant donors to the University of Mississippi, one of the colleges recruiting Oher, the Tuohys might subject themselves and the school to penalties in case of a violation. Everyone who has seen the 2009 film “The Blind Side” knows what happened next: Oher attended Mississippi, the Tuohys’ alma mater, and went on to the N.F.L.

We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. In the US, prosecutors are given enormous power to apply the law as they see fit, choosing who to charge and what to charge them with. Evidence of their misdeeds can secure convictions and allow for strict sentences that otherwise couldn’t be imposed. Bill Bramhall/Tribune Content AgencyThe 97-page indictment unveiled by Willis last week cites a lot more evidence than could be arrayed against a sandwich served at lunch. “We are the chief law enforcement officers in each jurisdiction, with the weighty power to deprive others of their freedom,” Aronberg observed.

Of course America loved “The Blind Side,” the 2009 movie about a homeless and hapless Black teenager rescued from a bleak future by a wealthy, white family. It was based on the true story of the Tuohy family, led by Sean and Leigh Anne, who took the future N.F.L. player Michael Oher into their home and raised him proudly as he made it to college and beyond. The film took in over $300 million and Sandra Bullock won an Oscar for her portrayal of Leigh Anne Tuohy, self-possessed belle of the New South. But “The Blind Side,” based on the best-selling book by Michael Lewis, renders a complicated reality in the most digestible format.

In the book’s prologue, he mentions that the Tuohys’ book, “In a Heartbeat: Sharing the Power of Cheerful Giving” (2010), came out while “I Beat the Odds” was underway. Oher alludes to at least one conflict involving the family. “I’ve read some newspaper articles recently where Leigh Anne Tuohy is quoted as saying that I would either be dead from a shooting or the bodyguard to some gang leader if I hadn’t been taken in by their family,” he writes. It never would have worked if it had been one-sided: just me pushing but not knowing what to do with the opportunity; or them trying to guide me but me not being willing to do any of the work. There had to be a give and take.”

There’s a scene in the film “The Blind Side” that intends to be an uplifting moment of triumph. Michael Oher, a talented offensive lineman who is Black, is struggling in a high school football practice, and in steps Leigh Anne Tuohy, a white woman who pulls him aside for a pep talk. Oher takes the advice and the practice turns into a montage of his extraordinary physical capabilities. He earns raucous approval from his teammates and the bewildered happiness of his coach, thanks to Tuohy’s familial advice. And his lawsuit filed this week accused the Tuohys of exaggerating the specifics of their relationship and of misleading him into signing away his life story for their benefit.

Fourteen years after its release, Sen. Tommy Tuberville is still earning royalties from "The Blind Side." In the movie, Tuberville briefly plays the role of himself as he tries to recruit Michael Oher to commit to Auburn University. Oher recently filed court documents alleging that he was misled by the family who brought him. According to a recently-file annual report of his personal finances, Tuberville earned $1,750.55 in royalties in 2022 from "WB Studio Enterprises Inc." in connection to the movie. Oher recently alleged in court documents that he was "exploited" by the Tuohy family, who he said never actually adopted him.

Michael Oher #73 of the Carolina Panthers watches play against the Arizona Cardinals during the NFC Championship Game at Bank Of America Stadium on January 24, 2016 in Charlotte, North Carolina. "The lie of Michael's adoption is one upon which Co-Conservators Leigh Anne Tuohy and Sean Tuohy have enriched themselves at the expense of their Ward, the undersigned Michael Oher," the petition to terminate the conservatorship in Shelby County Court in Tennessee said. The story of Oher and the Tuohy family became the subject of an Oscar-winning film, "The Blind Side," starring actor Sandra Bullock in the role of Leigh Anne Tuohy. According to the petition, Oher does not recall signing the agreement for the rights to his life story. In addition to termination, Oher's petition requests the court issue an injunction barring the Tuohys from using his name and likeness.

The former N.F.L. The petition, filed in Shelby County in Tennessee, claims that when he thought he was being adopted, the Tuohys urged him to sign a conservatorship in which he relinquished his ability to enter into contracts. The lawsuit also claims that Oher, who started living with the Tuohys at age 16, unknowingly signed away the rights to his life story to 20th Century Fox in 2007. Oher’s lawyer, J. Gerard Stranch IV, declined to comment beyond what was stated in the lawsuit. For “The Blind Side,” the hit film that starred Sandra Bullock as Leigh Anne Tuohy, Tim McGraw as Sean Tuohy and Quinton Aaron as Oher, the Tuohys negotiated a contract of $225,000 plus 2.5 percent of future “defined net proceeds” for themselves and their biological children, the lawsuit said.

Farmers in both are fighting a losing battle to save the soil that produces our food. By contrast, there's not enough water in the vast Yangtze basin, which produces a third of China's crops. Soil erosion could lead to a 10% loss in global crop production by 2050, according to the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Similarly, other measures such as digging thousands of new wells and encouraging farmers to switch crops to boost yields have limited impact. Options include not tilling soil to reduce erosion, and planting off-season cover crops to prevent erosion and nutrient loss.

The government could face its first shutdown in years if Congress doesn't pass a short-term funding bill this week. Sen. Joe Manchin's push for a bill to streamline fossil fuel projects is the major holdup. Some details of the CR have circulated, although it hasn't been officially announced yet — but the major roadblock is Manchin's permitting reform proposal. Preventing a shutdown with short-term fundingTraffic is piling up around Manchin's bill, but the rest of the resolution faces less pushback. Some progressives and environmentalists have defended aspects of Manchin's bill.
