CNN —Celebrity owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney could not have written a better Hollywood script since taking over Wrexham AFC in February 2021. The Welsh club earned its second consecutive promotion, this time to League One - English football’s third tier – following a 6-0 win over Forest Green Rovers on Saturday at the Racecourse Ground in Wrexham, Wales. With the win, Wrexham trails Stockport by four points for the League Two title, though the league leader has played one game fewer. Wrexham is now two promotions away from the English Premier League, with the Championship – English football’s second tier – the next aim. The Welsh club will look to continue its quest for a League Two championship when it next plays on April 20 against Crewe Alexandra at The Mornflake Stadium in Crewe, England

Reuters —England under-20 international Charlie Hughes gave new meaning to the phrase ‘late winner’ when he scored after 20 minutes of second-half stoppage time to earn Wigan Athletic a 1-0 win over Wycombe Wanderers in England’s third tier on Tuesday. The unusually long period of stoppage time at the end of the League One match came about because of an injury to referee Adam Herczeg after a fall early in the second half. The England under-20 international caught the ball on the volley to score the latest goal recorded in a match in the long history of the English Football League (EFL) to win the game. The victory moved Wigan into the top half of League One standings, sitting 11th with 34 points. Wycombe is 17th on 30 points, four above the relegation zone.

LONDON (AP) — It took Kevin De Bruyne less than five minutes to show why his return from injury could be so crucial for Manchester City in the second half of the Premier League season. De Bruyne had not made a league appearance since the opening round of the season in August, but it looked like he'd never been away. And in stoppage time, he lifted a perfectly weighted ball into the box for substitute Oscar Bobb to score his first Premier League goal and complete the comeback. Only two games were played Saturday with half of the Premier League teams having the weekend off for a short winter break. It was the 21-year-old Palmer’s ninth league goal of the season and fifth from the penalty spot after joining from Man City in the offseason.

While Erik Ten Hag's side set aside a difficult start to the season and cruised comfortably through at Old Trafford, Premier League Wolverhampton Wanderers and Luton Town were knocked out by lower-division opponents. Wolves went 2-0 up and then lost 3-2 at Championship (second tier) high-flyers Ipswich Town while Premier League newcomers Luton were beaten 1-0 at League One (third tier) side Exeter City. Vincent Kompany's Burnley, without a win in the Premier League so far this season, overran League Two (fourth tier) opponents Salford City 4-0 with a second-string team. The match was the night's only fixture pitting two top flight clubs against each other and they will meet again in the league at Old Trafford on Saturday. Sept 14 (Reuters) - English third-tier side Reading have been deducted three points after failing to deposit enough funds to cover the club's monthly wage bill, the English Football League (EFL) said on Wednesday. Reading received a one-point deduction last month with a further three points suspended, to be applied if they breached EFL regulations again. The club had failed to comply with an order to deposit funds equal to 125% of the forecast monthly wage bill in a designated account by Tuesday, the EFL said in a statement on Wednesday. Reading were also docked six points in April while they were competing in the second-tier Championship, a sanction which eventually resulted in their relegation. Footage of English football fans singing a player chant in 2016 is being shared online alongside the false claim that it shows Ukrainians celebrating a July 2023 attack on the bridge linking Russia to Crimea. One version of the clip was uploaded to YouTube on May 20, 2016 (here), where it is titled: “Will Grigg's on Fire - Best Football Chant Ever”. Other videos show Wigan supporters singing the song in numerous locations (here and here), while the striker himself was recorded singing along to it in 2018 (here). The alternative lyrics were reported on locally (here and here), while Twitter users also posted about them in March 2016 (here, here and here). On one of the first voyages, 492 Caribbean islanders onboard the HMT Empire Windrush arrived in the UK on June 22, 1948. That generation of immigrants became the namesake of that ship, and their arrival date is now celebrated as Windrush Day. On the rainy evening of March 31, 2023, he captained what he says is the first ever all trans masculine soccer team in Europe in a match. “I was quite nervous before the match,” Webber told CNN. They now also aim to make soccer a more inclusive sport and connect the trans community. “After the all trans feminine team played their game and once I’d played with the all-gender team, she took me aside and said she’d been thinking about what we could do next and asked if I’d be interested in captaining an all trans masc team,” Webber said. “One day, there’ll be hundreds of trans people playing football all over the country at all levels.”
Racecourse Ground, Wrexham CNN —Wrexham fans are still singing, they will likely be singing into the night, serenading their famous owners in the process, because the wait for promotion is finally over. On a raucous evening at the Racecourse, and with Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney – the actors who have transformed the club since their 2021 takeover – in the stadium, Wrexham secured promotion to the Football League after a 15-year absence. Wrexham will next season compete in League Two, the fourth tier of the English football league. New Wrexham fans, from Ohio, Los Angeles, Washington and Arizona, had come to Wales this week; some had tickets, some just wanted to be in the city to see for themselves what they had watched on TV. When Reynolds and McElhenney took ownership of the club in February 2021 few could have imagined the impact the pair would make.

The 37-year-old is set to take charge of Brentford's home game against Wolverhampton Wanderers, according to a list of officials for weekend fixtures on the Premier League's website.
