There are plenty of ways to get around without a license, from efficient public transportation systems to walkable neighborhoods and ride-share apps. The anxiety ate away at me until a recent trip to Arizona, where I visited a car-free neighborhood in Tempe called Culdesac. When Sampson Dahl, 28, found a former laundromat in Maspeth, Queens on an online forum back in 2019, he had no idea how much the space would become his life. Early last year, CNBC Make It met Dahl after his former laundromat-turned-apartment went viral on TikTok. At the time, he was paying $1,850 a month — his rent has since increased to $1,900. "I've gotten to focus on the space a lot, so I've been throwing shows, events, and intimate gatherings almost weekly at this point," Dahl tells CNBC Make It. "It's been a great opportunity to kind of dive into the space more."

Washington, DC CNN —Americans are living through the toughest housing market in a generation and, for some young people, the quintessential dream of owning a home is slipping away. Mortgage rates surged in recent years, hitting the highest levels in more than two decades last fall. CNN spoke with some young Americans about their thoughts on the current state of the US housing market and their plans for the future. “The housing market is not a single person’s market.”What typically happens when a regional housing market becomes too unaffordable is that people without the means simply move somewhere cheaper, such as a suburb an hour away, for example. Still, affordability takes into account mortgage rates, family incomes and single-family home prices, which remain a vexing pain point.

TERRACE STORY, by Hilary LeichterPriced out of their first home in an unnamed city, a young couple and their infant daughter, Rose, move into a smaller apartment. Structured as a collection of four linked stories, the book moves from Annie and Edward to another young couple, George and Lydia, who happens to be Rose’s daughter and is pregnant with her own. In the third section — the longest and most revelatory — Annie’s co-worker Stephanie is the focus of a grief-stricken origin story that deepens the novel’s supernatural fancies. The fourth section, set on an interstellar “suburb” as humanity migrates into outer space, brings Rose into contact with an “older woman” who is somehow Rose’s granddaughter. By contrast, Leichter announces her metaphysical conceit with a simple dinner party.

It shows how remote workers, or hybrid workers, crave a third space that isn't work or home. As the Wall Street Journal reports, gyms are the latest venture to break into offering coworking space. Its website touts that the gym's members lounge "offers communal work tables and social lounge spaces available from open until close for all club members," where members can "catch up on some work" or "just relax after your workout." As research on remote workers' time use shows, more are using their breaks to work out or participate in other leisure activities. That could explain why a gym-based coworking space is so appealing: You get the ability to socialize, work out, and still get your work done.

CNN —A 13-year-old kidnapping victim was rescued in Southern California after making a “Help Me!” sign to alert passersby, which then led to the arrest of a Texas man. Steven Robert Sablan, 61, is now facing federal kidnapping charges for the incident in which he is alleged to have pulled a gun on the girl as she walked along a sidewalk in San Antonio, Texas, earlier this month. “If you don’t get in the car with me, I am going to hurt you,” Sablan told the victim, according to court documents. A black handgun, later determined to be a BB gun, a switchblade, and handcuffs, were found in Sablan’s vehicle, according to the federal affidavit. If convicted on both charges, Sablan could face a sentence of up to life in prison.

Elon Musk said Twitter users have to temporarily sign in to view tweets to stop AI data scraping. Musk threatened companies that "stole" Twitter data with legal action and said he's open to ideas. Elon Musk said Twitter had to take "drastic and immediate" action to restrict access to tweets because AI companies were stealing its data. The Twitter CEO said Friday he took action to stop AI firms from "extreme levels" of data scrubbing. Hundreds of companies were "scraping Twitter data extremely aggressively", Musk said, adding that social media companies without an authentication process were at risk of becoming "bot-strewn hellscapes."

Opposition Grows to U.S. Imports of Refined Russian Oil
  + stars: | 2023-06-29 | by ( Ana Swanson | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Ukrainian officials and human rights groups are asking the United States to close what they describe as a loophole that allows Russian crude oil that has been refined in other countries to be shipped to the United States. The Biden administration issued a ban last March on purchasing crude oil and other petroleum products directly from Russia, immediately following the Kremlin’s invasion of Ukraine. The European Union, which was heavily dependent on Russia for supplies of energy, banned Russian crude in December and petroleum products the following February. But both the United States and the European Union continue to purchase Russian oil that has been refined in other countries into gasoline, fuel oil and other products. This activity is legal: Once Russian crude oil has been “substantially transformed” by being refined in another country, it legally ceases to be Russian.

Buhler says the biggest difference he sees in the AI landscape today is the accessibility of the technology. LLMs, he adds, didn't change "everything under the hood, they changed the interface and the way people can interact with AI." With almost any company able to integrate AI into any application, he invests in startups that use AI as real leverage. In the most recent CNBC Technology Executive Council survey, nearly half of the companies (47%) said that AI is their top priority for tech spending over the next year. In fact, AI budgets are more than double those of cloud computing, the second-biggest spending area at 21%.

Four people were killed, including a 71-year-old man, after a fire tore through an e-bike service store on the first floor of a building near Manhattan’s Chinatown neighborhood early Tuesday morning, according to the police. The fire, at a six-story mix-use building at 80 Madison Street, started around 12:15 a.m. and spread through the store, which has residential apartments above it, according to officials. Six adults were taken to three area hospitals, where four of them — two women and two men — died. The fire left soot smeared above the broken-out windows of the building, which also houses a deli, a laundromat and a news stand. A mountain of charred e-bikes and scooters was piled up on the corner.
