Read previewRegular readers of Business Insider know that we write rather frequently about Elon Musk and Tesla, his electric car maker. That's because he's a fascinating character, Tesla is a fascinating company — and we know you like reading about both. I downloaded the Tesla app on my iPhone and the owner added me to his account, meaning no physical key was needed. The trunk of the Tesla Model 3 could fit quite a lot of luggage. If I had to sum it up in a sentence, it'd be this: the Tesla was just a bit boring.

CNN —Two fast-growing fires are tearing across a southern New Mexico tribal reservation and converging on a village “like a pair of tongs,” prompting thousands of residents to evacuate, officials say. An estimated 5,000 residents were ordered to evacuate the village area due to the approaching South Fork Fire, New Mexico Forestry spokesperson George Ducker told CNN. A second blaze, the Salt Fire, is also burning on tribal land south of Ruidoso and has scorched 2,000 acres. The South Fork Fire has burned more than 5,000 acres and is zero percent contained, according to an overnight update from the New Mexico Forestry Division. Both fires are acting like “a pair of tongs, and Ruidoso is in the middle,” Ducker said.

The world’s largest experiment in driverless cars is underway on the busy streets of Wuhan, a city in central China with 11 million people, 4.5 million cars, eight-lane expressways and towering bridges over the muddy waters of the Yangtze River. A fleet of 500 taxis navigated by computers, often with no safety drivers in them for backup, buzz around. The company that operates them, the tech giant Baidu, said last month that it would add a further 1,000 of the so-called robot taxis in Wuhan. Across China, 16 or more cities have allowed companies to test driverless vehicles on public roads, and at least 19 Chinese automakers and their suppliers are competing to establish global leadership in the field. In addition to cities designating on-road testing areas for robot taxis, censors are limiting online discussion of safety incidents and crashes to restrain public fears about the nascent technology.

Blue Origin's winning bid came as part of contracts awarded under the Pentagon's $5.6 billion National Security Space Launch program. Blue Origin, SpaceX, and ULA did not immediately respond to CNBC requests for comment. Under the program, known as NSSL Phase 3 Lane 1, the trio of companies will be eligible to compete for contracts through mid-2029. Everybody, including Costco, is chasing Amazon, which accounts for 45% of all U.S. e-commerce sales, according to JPMorgan in a research note Monday. While unlikely to compete at the level of Amazon or Walmart online in the near future, Costco could carve out a lucrative e-commerce lane with its loyal, value-orientated customers. Engaged members want to spend more online at Costco "given the value/quality and cash back," the analysts added. Costco has an "incredible opportunity to better target customers and leverage its rich database of perfect data and is still in its early innings" of e-commerce, JPMorgan said. Adding to the e-commerce story, JPMorgan cited the Costco Logistics network, which has amped up "e-commerce fulfillment of bulky items."

Hong Kong CNN —Tesla is one step closer to launching full-self driving (FSD) technology in China after it clinched an agreement with Baidu to upgrade its mapping software. The Chinese tech giant said Saturday that it was providing lane-level navigation services for Tesla cars. China’s answer to Google has been been providing mapping services to Tesla since 2020. It could also accelerate Tesla’s global development of its self-driving technology, as data from China could be used to train Tesla’s algorithms needed for fully autonomous vehicles. “Tesla’s (own) navigation system can finally be used.”Introducing the FSD system could provide a revenue boost to Tesla, which is having a tough time in China.

What Makes Katie Ledecky Swim?

Long before Katie Ledecky was collecting gold medals and setting world records, she seemed nonchalant about making it across the pool. But when she saw her competitors cruising past, something sparked within her. Many of her early swims took place at Palisades Swim & Tennis Club, a wooded, family friendly setting in Cabin John, Md., near Washington. Her final meet at the club was in 2014, two years after she had won her first Olympic gold medal. “Palisades” is the first chapter of her new memoir, “Just Add Water,” which comes out on Tuesday, and the club’s pool remains her most meaningful place to swim.

New York CNN —Red Lobster wants to close several dozen more restaurants following its bankruptcy, and it has identified which ones are in danger of shutting down if the court approves its plan. The chain, which brought affordable shrimp and lobster to middle-class America and grew to become the largest seafood restaurant chain in the world, filed for bankruptcy last month. Red Lobster said that it had more than $1 billion in debt and less than $30 million in cash on hand. Part of its plan is to close some locations of its nearly 600 restaurants in the meantime. A few weeks prior to its bankruptcy, it abruptly closed around 50 locations across the United States.

Senator Robert Menendez of New Jersey, a lifelong Democrat who is in his fourth week of a federal bribery trial, filed paperwork Monday to run for re-election as an independent in November. The specter of Mr. Menendez, 70, trying to mount a comeback campaign raises the possibility of a splintered Democratic vote in November’s election, creating a wider lane for the Republican nominee at a time when Democrats are struggling to retain their narrow majority in the Senate. Mr. Menendez has been abandoned by most of the state’s leading Democrats, who quickly called on him to resign after he was indicted on corruption charges last year. He has defiantly refused to step down, but he opted not to run in Tuesday’s Democratic primary. He never, however, shut the door to running as an independent — enabling him to continue to raise and spend campaign contributions on lawyers hired to defend him and his wife, Nadine Menendez, who is also charged in the bribery conspiracy.

Before the water tanker rolled into one of New Delhi’s largest slums, Arvind Kumar was pacing between the gate of a public school and a tea seller’s stall hundreds of yards from his home, where he lives with nine members of his family. “There, it is coming,” Mr. Kumar shouted to a woman waiting on the slum’s edge. With their last stored drops now spent, and a heat wave searing the city, the two neighbors had decided to make sure the truck reached its destination. The woman boarded the 5,000-gallon tanker and guided its driver through a tight lane, past houses lined with thousands of jerrycans, many chained in place, and onto a stony plateau.

CNN —Canadian serial killer Robert Pickton - who was convicted of killing six women and confessed to killing dozens more - died after being attacked earlier this month by another inmate, prison authorities said. Pickton is one of the most notorious serial killers in Canadian history, bringing his victims to his pig farm and feeding their remains to his animals. Pickton had been operating a pig farm in the nearby city of Port Coquitlam, where police found the remains of 33 women. However, Pickton confessed to murdering 49 women when talking to an undercover police officer in a jail cell. The case became the largest serial killer investigation in Canada’s history and Pickton’s pig farm became the largest crime scene in Canadian history, with investigators taking 200,000 DNA samples.

“Today’s verdict does not change the fact that the American people face a simple reality,” said campaign communications director Michael Tyler. Convicted felon or not, Trump will be the Republican nominee for president,” Tyler said. Supporters hold placards and flags following the announcement of the verdict in Trump's criminal trial. Or, the guilty verdict could play into Biden’s campaign theme that his predecessor is too corrupt and extreme to serve as president again. The judge before adjourning Thursday afternoon set Trump's sentencing date for July 11 at 10 a.m. Trump's sentence could include fines and restitution, probation or other conditions — but a sentence of imprisonment is not off the table. Merchan has broad discretion to determine Trump's sentence, and he can factor all sorts of things into his final decision. The judge also previously accused Trump of trying to "intimidate" the court, prompting an expansion of the gag order that Trump would later violate 10 times. Gershman told CNBC that a jail sentence is "certainly plausible," and that it "would not be out of bounds" for Merchan to sentence Trump to some time behind bars.

European markets set to open mixed as UK's FTSE reopens

The U.K.'s FTSE 100 was seen opening lower after markets were closed for the late May bank holiday, while other major European bourses were seen moving higher. European markets are poised to open mixed on Tuesday after a quiet start to the trading week in which several key global markets were closed. Tuesday's session is light on the corporate earnings front, while wholesale price data is due out of Germany. Investors are continuing to weigh the prospects of a June rate cut by the European Central Bank after two key policymakers threw their weight behind the prospect on Monday. Meanwhile, the ECB's Chief Economist Philip Lane said in an interview with the Financial Times, "Barring major surprises, at this point in time there is enough in what we see to remove the top level of restriction."
