DETROIT — Canadian union Unifor and Stellantis have reached a tentative agreement early Monday morning, ending a brief strike that began after a deal wasn't reached by 11:59 p.m. Sunday. Details of the tentative agreement with Stellantis were not immediately available. The Canadian work stoppage comes nearly three weeks after Unifor launched a roughly 12-hour national strike against General Motors after the sides failed to reach a tentative agreement by a union-set deadline. The Canadian union is negotiating with each automaker separately and using a deal first reached last month with Ford as a pattern for GM and Stellantis. However, once the UAW reached a tentative agreement, which must still be ratified by members, Wednesday with Ford Motor , it has used that deal as a template for proposals with Stellantis and GM.

Oct 22 (Reuters) - Workers at St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corp have decided to go on strike on Sunday after failing to reach an agreement on wages, the Canadian labor union Unifor said. "This impasse is extremely unfortunate, but our members remain committed to getting a fair agreement," Unifor National President Lana Payne said in a statement. St. Lawrence Seaway Management did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Unifor gave a 72-hour strike notice to St. Lawrence on Wednesday, demanding higher wages. The strike would affect the St. Lawrence Seaway, which connects the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence river, disrupting cargo movement towards Canadian provinces.

Members of Unifor, the Canadian union that represents 4,300 workers at GM, voted 80% in favor of the new deal, which gives them base-wage increases of nearly 20% during the life of the deal and improves their pensions. Had the GM rank and file of Unifor voted down the tentative deal, the union was prepared to immediately resume the strike. Unifor members in three Ontario cities went on strike at GM just after the deadline at 11:59 p.m. Monday. We did that.”“Nothing worthwhile is ever easy – and labor negotiations are no exception,” Marissa West, president and managing director of GM Canada, said in a statement. The two deals in Canada stand in contrast to the strike against the US operations of GM, Ford and Stellantis.

The walkout by workers came after Canadian union Unifor said GM was "stubbornly refusing" to match the contract the labor union reached with Ford Motor (F.N), which offered wage increases of up to 25% in Canada. The walkout adds to the headache faced by the automaker in the U.S. where it is racking up millions of dollars in losses per week due to the United Auto Workers (UAW) strike that started Sept. 15. DETROIT — General Motors has reached a tentative agreement for nearly 4,300 Canadian autoworkers after the union representing those workers called a national strike early Tuesday. Canadian union Unifor said Tuesday afternoon the "strike actions are on hold to allow the membership to vote on the tentative agreement." Unifor initiated a national strike after the sides failed to reach a deal by an 11:59 p.m. Monday deadline. The Canadian engine plant marked a major concern for the automaker, which also is facing U.S. strikes by the United Auto Workers union. Unifor said the tentative deal with GM follows a ratified agreement reached last month with Ford Motor.

TORONTO (AP) — Auto workers walked off the job at three General Motors facilities in Canada early Tuesday after failing to reach agreement with the automaker. Their union, Unifor, represents more than 4,200 workers at the plants. They had warned they would begin a strike if no agreement was struck with GM by midnight local time. Workers at Ford of Canada ratified a new deal late last month that raises base hourly pay for production workers by almost 20% over three years. Unifor had earlier avoided going on strike against the Detroit automakers, unlike its U.S. counterpart, the United Auto Workers.

GM was disappointed about being unable to reach a deal at this time but will continue to negotiate with Unifor, the automaker said in a statement. Unifor represents about 18,000 workers at the Canadian facilities of the Detroit Three automakers, which also include Ford (F.N) and Chrysler parent Stellantis (STLAM.MI). Unifor last month ratified a new three-year contract with Ford that offered wage increases of up to 25% to more than 5,600 workers at its Canadian facilities. Unifor said last week that GM was "resisting" a number of important elements of its agreement with Ford. The union had chosen the company as its second bargaining target of the Detroit Three automakers after Ford.

DETROIT (AP) — Canadian auto workers say General Motors will be their next target after members ratified a new three-year labor contract with Ford. Unifor, which represents about 4,300 workers at three GM facilities in Canada, said Monday it reached a strong deal with Ford and now will try to negotiate a pattern agreement with GM. Workers at Ford of Canada ratified a new deal on Sunday that raises base hourly pay for production workers by almost 20% over three years, and by more than 25% for trade workers. But, according to the union, that figure doesn’t include compounding of each annual increase or the initial cost-of-living increase, both of which should increase workers’ actual pay. The UAW has been on strike for 11 days with targeted factory and warehouse shutdowns at GM, Ford and Stellantis, maker of Jeep, Chrysler, Ram and other vehicles.

According to an update posted on the union site: “Unifor is extending negotiations with Ford Motor Company for a 24-hour period. By contrast, Unifor announced if it goes on strike, it will strike all the Ford facilities where it represents members. The union had granted them contract extensions while it focused its negotiations on reaching the best possible deal with Ford. It has not had a strike in its Canadian operations since 1990 and has not had a US strike since 1978. Some CEOs are deciding that they need to make drastic, expensive and often unpopular institutional changes to help them keep up.
