Read previewMattel CEO Ynon Kreiz is trying to transform the toy maker into an entertainment company — but don't look for it to be a funder or distributor in its own right. After 2023's smash success of Greta Gerwig's "Barbie," Kreiz has become one of the most intriguing figures in Hollywood. Kreiz spoke with Business Insider on Wednesday about lessons from Barbie and how he's turning Mattel into an IP company. At a time of massive disruption in entertainment, Kreiz thinks Mattel is well-positioned. But "Barbie" established a blueprint for Mattel's future projects in working with top creatives, providing promotion power, and staying true to its brands, Kreiz said.

In a Tuesday interview with CNBC's Jim Cramer, Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz didn't address a reported takeover offer, and instead said he's positive about the Barbie maker's success as its own company. "What I can say is that we're very confident in Mattel's strategy and our ability to create long-term shareholder value as a standalone company." Despite the monster success of the Barbie movie last summer, Mattel's share price has declined over the past several months. But Kreiz said he was confident in the Barbie brand, saying Mattel's share price doesn't "reflect the success we've had to date" or "future potential." "So we are well-positioned to build on this multi-year trajectory, and continue to execute our strategy, and expect the share price to reflect this over time."

This is especially important for the company's Fisher-Price and American Girl brands, which have been in the midst of their own transformations for several years. In just the last year, net global sales for American Girl were down 9%. When it comes to to the American Girl brand, Kreiz admits that the challenges "were not product driven," but rather an issue with its commercial strategy. Mattel executives remained tightlipped about what to expect from an upcoming American Girl movie, which currently does not have a release date.

Driven largely by benefits associated with the “Barbie” movie, Mattel finished last year strong with 24% fourth-quarter growth. Before the “Barbie” movie was released, the Barbie brand already had a 99% rate of global brand awareness, selling more than 100 dolls every single minute, according to Mattel. What’s next for Mattel Films? Mattel Films, which is headed by Oscar-nominated producer Robbie Brenner, faces a lot of pressure to live up to “Barbie” with its second go-around. When asked about the possibility of an R-rated film at Mattel, Kreiz says, “I wouldn’t rule out different scenarios.

In a Wednesday interview with CNBC's Jim Cramer, Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz detailed the company's growth strategy, saying its aim is to engage consumers through culture. "We're very much about embracing culture, creating cultural moments, cultural touch points and make sure that we take brands that are timeless and make them timely," Kreiz said. "We look to continue to create these moments, these special connections with people who buy our product." Mattel has seen a lot of attention after the huge box office success of "Barbie," its collaboration with Warner Bros. Kreiz said another example of the company's effort to keep its brands relevant is through products like Super Bowl-themed toys, which include Barbie dolls.

Activist investor Barington Capital is pushing Mattel to consider selling off its American Girl and Fisher-Price brands, citing underperformance within the divisions. Mattel shares were up around 3% in premarket trading Friday following a letter sent to Mattel Thursday, which was first reported by the Wall Street Journal. American Girl and Fisher-Price, two iconic brands, are among the most popular in their respective markets. Mitarotonda said that if Mattel cannot stymie continued erosion in both Fisher-Price and American Girl, which has suffered similar declines, the company "may not be the right owner of these brands." "We believe that these brands are now detracting from the success at Mattel's other segments and hurting shareholder value," Mitarotonda said in a release.

Mattel hopes a new hire will help it expand its content slate, following the blowout box office success of "Barbie." The toy maker, home to Hot Wheels and American Girl, announced Thursday that it has hired former Fox and Sony exec Michelle Mendelovitz as head of Mattel Television Studios. "I look forward to the impact Michelle and Mattel Television Studios will have on expanding the content slate to the delight of our fans around the globe." Mendelovitz previously held senior roles at Disney 20th Television Studios, Apple TV+, Sony Pictures Television and CBS Television Network. "Hot Wheels Let's Race" and "Masters of the Universe: Revolution" are a few of the new releases planned for the upcoming year.

Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" movie pushed up sales for the iconic doll, Mattel execs say. Global gross billings in the quarter were up 14%, but this wasn't enough to offset poor performance in the first half of 2023. AdvertisementAdvertisementGreta Gerwig's "Barbie" blockbuster helped boost sales for the plastic doll following a poor performance in the first half of the year. North America made up around 58% of Barbie's total gross billings, and saw a much bigger rise — gross billings were up 26% to $349.9 million in the quarter. Global gross billings were down 6% in the year to September compared to the same period in 2022.

Hasbro's third-quarter revenue performance missed Wall Street's expectations and the company cut its full-year revenue outlook again as signs of a possible industry slowdown in toy sales heading into the holiday season weighs on jittery investors. Holiday shopping is traditionally a critical selling season for toy companies and can comprise a large portion of their annual toy sales. Rival Mattel Inc. had a better third quarter, reporting on Wednesday that its sales rose 9% in the period. Still, experts are pointing to toy industry sales being down for the year to date and the third quarter as a concern. Mattel Chairman and CEO Ynon Kreiz said during a conference call on Wednesday that the company anticipates the global toy industry will experience a mid single-digits decline in toy sales for the full year.

Mattel on Wednesday said Barbie sales jumped 16% in the third quarter, riding the wave of the blockbuster movie. The "Barbie" film, released in July, is largely responsible for the bump, Mattel said. Mattel said Hot Wheels sales jumped 22% when compared to the same three-month period last year. Earlier this year, car makeover competition series "Hot Wheels: Ultimate Challenge" premiered on NBC. Mattel also announced last year that a Hot Wheels film is in the works with Warner Bros. , the studio behind "Barbie."

Worldwide gross billings, or the amount invoiced to customers, for dolls rose 27%, bringing in $885 million to Mattel in the third quarter. Meanwhile, vehicles — mainly driven by Hot Wheels — rose 18% to $519 million compared to the same quarter a year ago. The company reported $146.3 million in net income during the quarter, down 50% from the $289.9 million it reported in the same quarter a year ago. Mattel said it sold $350 million worth of Barbie products in the quarter.

In an interview with CNBC's Jim Cramer, Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz said his company's goals are growing beyond the toy aisle and into capturing the value of its brands' intellectual property for ventures like film franchises. "We are here to build film franchises," Kreiz said. Kreiz said the Barbie was a showcase for what Mattel can bring to the table in the future. "This is about how do you take successful brands and execute an IP strategy across multiple verticals, highly-accredited business verticals that in some cases are bigger than the toy industry, all driven by big franchises," Kreiz said. Mattel also saw 19% growth in its sales of Hot Wheels toys this quarter, and Kreiz said the company sees "tremendous opportunity ahead" with the brand, mentioning the upcoming live-action Hot Wheels film produced by JJ Abrams.

New York CNN —The ‘Barbie’ movie, which turned into a global box office phenomenon in a matter of weeks, appears to be energizing sales of Barbie toys after its summer release. “That’s a significant increase,” said Jaime Katz, an analyst with Morningstar who covers Barbie toy maker, Mattel. Demand for Barbie products from the movie’s record-making success isn’t surprising. Although the Circana data didn’t breakout sales data for Barbie dolls, Katz said Barbie doll sales were growing well even before the movie release. “This could pose a problem in 2024, when Mattel is lapping elevated movie-related Barbie sales,” she said.

A fake campaign by environmental activists said Barbie-maker Mattel would go plastic-free by 2030. Outlets like People, The Washington Times , and Dow Jones Newswires reported that Mattel, the maker of Barbie and other toys like American Girl dolls and Hot Wheels, would go plastic-free by 2030. "With our plastic-free commitment, we denounce the empty promises of plastic recycling and take a bold step towards real ecological sustainability. July 30 (Reuters) - Warner Bros' (WBD.O) "Barbie" showed no signs of slowing down in its second weekend at the box office, and was set to haul in $93 million in ticket sales Friday through Sunday, according to estimates from media analytics firm Comscore. 1 movie, and the highest-grossing opening weekend for a film directed by a woman - has made more than $351 million in the U.S. and Canada since opening on July 21, and nearly $775 million globally, Comscore reported. The two films together have been dubbed "Barbenheimer," a nod to the relative rarity of two blockbusters opening the same weekend. Their combined sales are "absolutely mind blowing," Dergarabedian said, with second-weekend numbers that "would have been hailed as opening weekend wins." Universal's Oppenheimer has made $174 million in the U.S. and Canada so far, and $400 million worldwide.

Sales of Barbie dolls and related merchandise fell in the first half of 2023, Mattel execs say. This is despite the doll being catapulted back into the spotlight in Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" movie. But execs say July sales so far are higher than last year and the impact of the movie will last for years. Gross billings represent amounts invoiced to customers and don't include the impact of sales adjustments, such as trade discounts. Mattel said that despite gross billings for Barbie falling, sales for its Disney Princess, Disney Frozen, and Monster High franchises helped boost its dolls category overall.
