This summer, after 13 years, the police finally made an arrest in the Gilgo Beach murders. When I was reporting “Lost Girls,” my 2013 book about the case and victims, the police were largely silent. Since July, I’ve conducted interviews with people close to the Gilgo case during every chapter of its bizarre 13-year timeline. (Several sources asked for anonymity, concerned that public statements by insiders might undercut the case against Heuermann before the trial.) From the moment those women were found at Gilgo Beach, the law-enforcement culture of Suffolk County seemed so preternaturally ill suited to handle this case that a killer was allowed to roam free.

Six years later, Barb was 20 and in college when someone else in the family needed help. Her sister Christy was the second-born, 24 years older than Barb and the star of the family in many ways. Watch The Whole Story with Anderson Cooper: The Gilgo Beach Killer Sunday at 8 p.m. The bodies of four women were among nearly a dozen sets of human remains found near Gilgo Beach and Ocean Parkway on Long Island. Suffolk County Police DepartmentHeuermann has pleaded not guilty to the murders of Megan Waterman, Melissa Barthelemy and Amber Lynn Costello. A major corruption scandal within Suffolk County law enforcement did not help the matter. Notably, a day after he was arrested, the Suffolk County police deputy commissioner announced that the FBI would join the investigation into the Gilgo Beach murders.

As the police scoured the beach for more bodies in the spring of 2010 (and found several), Ms. Cann and the family members of the other women were caught in a peculiar bind. Now that they were part of a serial-killer case, the world was beating a path to their doors; perhaps there might even be a break in the case. Then came the horrible hangover of seeing their daughters and sisters in the news, constantly being referred to as prostitutes. In 2012, Maslov and Shiplyuk presented the results of an experiment on hypersonic missile design at a seminar in Tours, France. In 2016, all three were among the authors of a book chapter entitled "Hypersonic Short-Duration Facilities for Aerodynamic Research at ITAM, Russia". Three Russian scientists involved in missile development have been arrested, according to reports. The scientists are accused of treason, a charge that carries up to 20 years in prison. The missiles they helped create are among the most prized weapons in the Russian military's arsenal. The arrest of Shiplyuk, director of the institute's Siberian branch, was reported by Russian state media last August, and Maslov, its chief researcher, last July. If this reads as a quite on-the-nose critique of contemporary conversations about race and appropriation, that’s because it is. It is in fact so obvious that it makes one wonder why Kuang uses the device of an unreliable narrator at all. Instead, June’s methodology is consistently to tell the reader her trespasses and offer flimsy justifications for them. These moments suggest the kinds of layers and intrigue the book could have maintained if it weren’t so committed to showing its hand. “Yellowface” is a kind of Art Monster story, but one that can’t allow room for ambiguity or revelation without rushing in to fill that space.

Even though the police had, Ms. Hart acknowledged, found it many years earlier, it was new to the public. Alongside that clue, Ms. Hart announced a new website meant to aggregate public police information about the case and encourage tips from the community. “They had attempted to report her missing, but they weren’t able to,” Ms. Hart said. Some have tried to connect the Long Island serial killer case to a string of unsolved escort killings in Atlantic City. Ms. Hart has her own theory — unproven of course, though she sounds energized as she shares it.
