Kenneth Mitchell, a Canadian actor known for his roles on the series “Star Trek: Discovery” and the film “Captain Marvel,” died on Saturday. He had lived with the neurological disorder amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or A.L.S., which causes paralysis and death, for more than five years, according to a statement from Mr. Mitchell’s family posted to his social media. Mr. Mitchell played the Klingons Kol, Kol-Sha, and Tenavik, as well as Aurellio, on “Star Trek: Discovery,” and voiced several other characters in an episode of “Star Trek: Lower Decks.”In “Captain Marvel,” he played the father of the superhero, Carol Danvers. He was also known for portraying Eric Green on the series “Jericho,” Joshua Dodd in the series “Nancy Drew,” a hockey player in the film “Miracle,” and appeared in several other film and television series.

CNN —Kenneth Mitchell, an actor who appeared in the series “Star Trek: Discovery” and Marvel’s “Captain Marvel,” has died, his family announced in a statement shared on his verified social media Sunday. “With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Kenneth Alexander Mitchell, beloved father, husband, brother, uncle, son and dear friend,” the family’s statement read. Yeshiva University announced Monday that it would allow the formation of a new LGBTQ student group, the latest twist in a yearslong dispute between the Orthodox Jewish university and its lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer students. The university said the new queer club, Kol Yisrael Areivim, will be an "approved traditional Orthodox alternative" to its current LGBTQ student group, the YU Pride Alliance. School officials have been in a legal battle with the student-run group for over a year after the university refused to formally recognize it. The Pride Alliance slammed the new club as a "sham." Shortly afterward, school officials suspended all student club activity.

Sunday, Sept. 25, marks the beginning of one of the most important periods of the Jewish calendar. Rosh Hashana, the New Year, begins Sunday night, followed 10 days later by Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. Many Jews who do not attend synagogue regularly make sure to be present for the evening prayer service that marks the start of Yom Kippur, when worshipers recite Kol Nidrei, perhaps the most famous passage in Jewish liturgy—and one of the least understood. At first sight Kol Nidrei (also known as Kal Nidrei), which roughly translates to “all vows,” may seem technical and prosaic, entirely out of place for the holiest day of the Jewish year. One common version reads: “All vows, prohibitions, bans, oaths, restrictions, penalties and oaths of dedication, that we will utter and swear, and take upon ourselves, from this Day of Atonement until the next Day of Atonement, to come in goodness; all these [vows] I regret; let all of them be discarded and forgiven, abolished and undone; they are not valid and they are not binding.” As mundane as this may seem, by acknowledging the human temptation to take vows we will later regret, this legal formula offers an important message about the power of regret to foster lasting change in our lives.
