☆ Red Lobster closings: These are the locations it wants to shut down

New York CNN —Red Lobster wants to close several dozen more restaurants following its bankruptcy, and it has identified which ones are in danger of shutting down if the court approves its plan. The chain, which brought affordable shrimp and lobster to middle-class America and grew to become the largest seafood restaurant chain in the world, filed for bankruptcy last month. Red Lobster said that it had more than $1 billion in debt and less than $30 million in cash on hand. Part of its plan is to close some locations of its nearly 600 restaurants in the meantime. A few weeks prior to its bankruptcy, it abruptly closed around 50 locations across the United States.

DETROIT – General Motors plans to invest roughly $13 billion in U.S. facilities by April 2028, the United Auto Workers union said as part of its recent tentative agreement with the automaker. GM has already announced some of the planned investments such as $4 billion at Orion Assembly in suburban Detroit and $2 billion in Spring Hill, Tennessee, for new electric vehicles. GM was the last Detroit automaker to reach a tentative agreement following Ford Motor and Chrysler-parent Stellantis . GM's U.S. investments through the terms of the 4 ½-tear tentative compared to $8.1 billion announced by the union at Ford and $18.9 billion at Stellantis, including $6.2 billion in previously announced parts plants in Kokomo, Indiana. "The UAW is holding the deal hostage over battery plants," said Ford Chief Executive Jim Farley on Sept. 29. ☆ Ford lays off 700 who were building electric version of F-150

CNN —Ford is laying off about 700 workers who build the F-150 Lightning, the electric version of its best-selling pickup truck, and unlike other recent layoffs this one has nothing to do with the ongoing strike by the United Auto Workers union. The company said overall demand for its electric vehicle lineup remains strong with a 65% increase in the third quarter. It has laid off nearly 2,500 workers so far, not counting those who had been building the Lightning. Workers laid off due to the strike are ineligible for unemployment benefits in most states. But the F-150 Lightning workers who are laid off will be eligible for both unemployment and sub pay, according to Ford spokesperson Jessica Enoch.

Stellantis and SDI said their second joint battery factory in Indiana is scheduled to open in 2027, and could employ 1,400 workers. The two companies would have a combined annual production capacity of 67 gigawatt hours (GWh) at the Indiana production site, Samsung SDI said in a statement. The first joint plant is set to start production in the first quarter of 2025. New York CNN —General Motors and Ford are laying off 500 additional workers between them, blaming the expansion of the strike announced by the United Auto Workers union at those companies on Friday. General Motors said it was laying off 164 workers at stamping plants in Parma, Ohio, and Marion, Indiana. Ford said it laid off 330 workers at its Chicago Stamping Plant and Lima Engine Plant following the union’s decision Friday to strike its Chicago Assembly plant, which made the Ford Explorer and Lincoln Aviator SUVs. It had previously laid off 600 hourly workers at the Michigan Assembly plant in Wayne, Michigan who were not on strike. Those benefits for both strikers and laid-off UAW members will cost the union about $14.3 million a week, but it went into the strike with $825 million in its strike fund.

Talks among the UAW and negotiators for the Detroit Three were described as "very active" by one person briefed on the situation. The union has shut one assembly plant at each of the Detroit Three, and 38 parts distribution centers at GM and Stellantis. However, strikes at these plants would have less impact as the models affected are either money-losers or substantially less profitable than the big pickups. DETROIT, Sept 20 (Reuters) - Talks were ongoing on Wednesday between union representatives and company management in the sixth day of the United Auto Workers strike at the Detroit Three automakers, a day after Ford (F.N) averted a walkout by Canadian workers. The UAW launched a strike against Ford, General Motors (GM.N) and Chrysler parent Stellantis (STLAM.MI) last week, targeting one U.S. assembly plant at each company. The UAW's coordinated U.S. action led to about 12,700 workers going on strike last week. Ford reached a last-minute deal to avoid a walkout at its Canadian operations late on Tuesday. Unifor, which represents about 5,600 Canadian auto workers, had been threatening to go on strike at all three of Ford's plants in that country if a deal was not reached by late on Tuesday.
