Despite an overall slump in startup funding, 2023 saw a scramble among investors to pour money into AI and machine learning startups. And the company's star still appears to be rising, despite a messy leadership struggle that recently spilled into public view. Meanwhile OpenAI's perennial rival Anthropic attracted multi-billion dollar investments from both Google and Amazon to fund a competing AI model known as Claude. At the same time legacy companies from John Deere to accounting firm PwC played up their AI bona fides to capitalize on the hype. The list doesn't include startups who have not publicly released the amount of their funding rounds.

The artificial intelligence behind ChatGPT-like products and autonomous driving is driving enormous demand for Nvidia's chips in China. Chinese companies also dominate the burgeoning electric car market , where Nvidia has had a fast-growing business of selling chips for assisted and fully autonomous driving. When it comes to such chips for cars, Nomura analysts said there's little reason to worry. Auto chip market BYD, Nio , Li Auto and Xpeng are among the China-based electric automakers using the Orin chip. In the automotive chip category, they noted Nvidia's Thor chip and Qualcomm's Snapdragon Ride Flex chip both fall into that more advanced category.

The company said it raised an additional $49 million, bringing its total round of funding to to $97 million. Taiwanese giant Foxconn , the company that assembles Apple's iPhones, and Alltek, a communications tech company, were among the investors in the round. In contrast, Kneron designs a chipset that goes into devices like consumer electronics and cars that allow AI on the "edge." "So that will force people to switch into the more low cost (NPUs)," Liu said. Kneron has no shortage of competitors from giants like Qualcomm and MediaTek — which are aiming for on-device AI with their chips — and startups developing AI semiconductors.
