Opinion: A turning point in Ukraine
  + stars: | 2024-01-09 | by ( Opinion Michael Bociurkiw | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +9 min
Last year, Ukraine passed legislation shifting its Christmas celebrations in line with many Western dates – a step to further distance itself from traditions commonly observed in Russia. As 2023 drew to a close, Russia launched the biggest air attack on Ukraine since the beginning of its full-scale invasion. The intensity and frequency of the attacks — on the back of reports that the Ukrainian counteroffensive is stalling and that western backers of Ukraine are holding back billions in funding — marks a major turning point in the war. While it’s impossible to put an exact number on Ukrainian war losses, anyone who visits the military portion of the Lychakiv Cemetary in Lviv can see that its expanded to almost maximum capacity. Ukraine scored a big win last week when the EU approved sanctions against Russia’s largest diamond producer, Alrosa, and its CEO.

Russia blamed Ukraine for an attempted "terrorist attack" in Moscow Monday, which did not result in casualties. The Russian Defence Ministry posted on Telegram that two Ukraine drones were "suppressed and crashed" in the early hours of the morning and reported "no victims." The city was hit by a deadly Russian airstrike, which killed at least one person and left another 22 injured. Ukrainian member of Parliament Kira Rudik told Sky News that the night of the attacks was "probably the most vicious" since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The hostilities destroyed a grain depot and large parts of the Spaso-Preobrazhenskyi Cathedral in the port city, according to Ukrainian officials.

A barrage of Russian missiles fired Saturday targeted Ukraine's electrical grid. Ukrainian parliamentary deputy Kira Rudik tweeted that power was knocked out for 1.5 million people. "Total darkness and cold are coming," Rudick said, as the country prepares for winter with limited power. "1.5 million of #Ukrainians without electricity right now," Kira Rudick, a member of the Ukrainian parliament tweeted shortly after the attacks. On Telegram, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the attacks "vile strikes on critical objects," and urged Ukrainians to conserve energy.
