The rally provides little relief to CEO Pat Gelsinger, who has had a tough run since taking the helm in 2021. Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger speaks while showing silicon wafers during an event called AI Everywhere in New York, Thursday, Dec. 14, 2023. That prospect would be more palatable to Wall Street if Intel's core business was at the top of its game. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said in February that it would use Intel to produce a chip, but didn't provide details. Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger holds a sample of a wafer during his keynote speech at the Computex conference in Taipei on June 4, 2024. Intel shares jumped 8% in extended trading Monday after the company said it plans to turn its foundry business into an independent unit with its own board and the potential to raise outside capital. Gelsinger said the restructuring would allow the foundry business to "evaluate independent sources of funding," and comes days after Intel's board met to assess the direction and future of the company. The foundry business, which Intel plans to use to manufacture chips for other customers, has been a big drag on its bottom line, with the company spending roughly $25 billion on it in each of the last two years. With a standalone "operating board" and a cleaner corporate structure, the mechanics of a separation become far easier than trying to turn a fully integrated unit into a separate company.

Apple announced on Monday that its AirPods Pro 2 headphones will become an FDA-cleared hearing aid in the coming weeks through a software update. Apple CEO Tim Cook has highlighted health features as the company's "most important contribution to mankind." The new feature is a free software update for some AirPods models and will be included with Apple's $249 AirPods Pro 2. Many over-the-counter hearing aids are much more expensive, according to buyers guides cited by the Hearing Loss Association of America, an advocacy group. Analysts say that adding health features like a hearing aid expands the market for the device, which could help sales.

During Google's Pixel phone launch on Tuesday, a product director named David Citron took the stage to show off the mobile capabilities of the company's new AI assistant, Gemini. Rivals are preparing consumers for a future of AI, but Google's Gemini features are real and are shipping — at least for testing purposes — now. Google's kickoff on Tuesday could put renewed pressure on Apple, as the two smartphone market leaders race to integrate AI into their operating systems. Google's most important presentation on Tuesday was Gemini Live, its next-generation assistant. The company said Apple's approach is less private than Google's, because Gemini "doesn't require hand-off to a third-party AI provider you may not know or trust."

Apple Intelligence, the company's forthcoming artificial intelligence system, could spur a fresh cycle of iPhone upgrades and hardware sales. One question Cook was willing to partially address was about the company's spending on AI servers. "Embedded in our results this quarter is an increase year over year in the amount we're spending for AI and Apple Intelligence," Cook told CNBC's Steve Kovach on Thursday. The rise in Apple's capital expenditure is tiny compared to its mega-cap peers, such as Microsoft, Google , and Meta . Zuckerberg also wants to ensure that Apple won't fully control the next major technology shift, if it turns out to be AI.

Apple CEO Tim Cook attends the annual developer conference event at the company's headquarters in Cupertino, California, U.S., June 10, 2024. Apple's third quarter, which ends in June, is traditionally the company's slowest quarter of the year by sales. Qualcomm reported fiscal third-quarter earnings on Wednesday that beat Wall Street expectations, particularly for sales, and provided strong guidance for the current quarter. Qualcomm said it expected between $9.5 billion and $10.3 billion in sales in the current quarter, compared to Wall Street expectations of $9.71 billion. Handset sales rose 12% on a year-over-year basis to $5.9 billion in revenue, in line with analyst estimates from StreetAccount, which suggests that a deep slump in smartphone sales over the past two years is abating. Those three hardware lines are reported together as QCT, the company's chip business, which in total reported $8.1 billion in sales, up 12% year-over-year. Qualcomm also collects licensing fees from companies that integrate 5G or other cellular technologies into their products, reported as QTL sales.

AMD shares are down about 6% in 2024, even though the company is the second-largest vendor of data center GPUs after Nvidia . Investors want to see AMD take market share away from its longtime rival Nvidia with its MI300X AI chip and signal growth in its data center AI business. Earlier this year, AMD said it expected $4 billion in AI chips sales this year, or about 15% of the company's expected sales. AMD AI chip sales are reported in the company's Data Center segment, which grew 115% year-over-year to $2.8 billion, driven by an increase in AI GPU shipments, AMD said. Sales for PCs are reported in the company's Client segment, which rose 49% year-over-year to $1.5 billion, versus expectations of $1.43 billion from Street Account.

Apple said on Monday that the artificial intelligence models underpinning Apple Intelligence, its AI system, were pretrained on processors designed by Google, a sign that Big Tech companies are looking for alternatives to Nvidia when it comes to the training of cutting-edge AI. Apple's choice of Google's homegrown Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) for training was detailed in a technical paper just published by the company. Separately, Apple released a preview version of Apple Intelligence for some devices on Monday. Apple doesn't name Google or Nvidia in its 47-page paper, but did note its Apple Foundation Model (AFM) and AFM server are trained on "Cloud TPU clusters." "This system allows us to train the AFM models efficiently and scalably, including AFM-on-device, AFM-server, and larger models," Apple said in the paper.

Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg speaks during the Meta Connect event at Meta headquarters in Menlo Park, California, on Sept. 27, 2023. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been assembling a large stockpile of Nvidia chips, spending billions of dollars so his company can develop and train advanced artificial intelligence models. But even he says the AI hype may be driving too much investment. Meta debuted its latest Llama AI model on Tuesday. The model, dubbed Llama 3.1, comes in three different versions, with one variant being the biggest and most capable AI model from Meta to date.

Meta on Tuesday announced the latest version of its Llama artificial intelligence model. Nvidia is a key Meta partner and provides the social networking giant with the computing chips called GPUs to help train its AI models, including the latest version of Llama. For example, Meta said that Llama model announced on Tuesday was trained on 16,000 of Nvidia's H100 graphics processors. But open-source models can cost hundreds of millions or billions of dollars to create. There aren't many companies that are financially able to develop and release open-source models with similar amounts of investment.
