Family offices are increasingly bypassing private equity funds and buying stakes in private companies directly, according to a new survey. Half of family offices plan to do "direct deals" — or invest in a private company without a private equity fund — over the next two years, according to a family office survey from Bastiat Partners and Kharis Capital. As they grow in size and sophistication, family offices are becoming more confident about finding and negotiating their own private equity deals. "Family offices are being gradually recognized as an economic powerhouse in private markets," according to the report. The big challenge for family offices as they do more direct deals is so-called "deal flow," or the volume of possible deals.

French food tech startup Not So Dark just landed $80 million from Kharis Capital and Verlinvest. It was a food delivery company called Resto-in that was later acquired by Dutch company Lieferando, which in turn was gobbled up by Just Eat Takeaway. Now 37, Benoit is back in the food delivery game and just secured an $80 million Series B for Not So Dark. They have been criticized for killing the high street but grew in popularity during the pandemic as demand for food delivery soared. Not So Dark's technology also scans comments on each delivery platform to find ways to make deliveries better.
Lawmakers overwhelmingly approved the bill, which authorises the president to form an oversight body to fine data handlers for breaching rules on distributing or gathering personal data. The legislation stipulates individuals can be jailed for up to six years for falsifying personal data for personal gain or up to five years for gathering personal data illegally. Communications minister, Johnny G. Plate, said the bill's passage "marks a new era in the management of personal data in Indonesia." "One of the obligations for electronic data organisers, whether public or private, is to ensure protection of personal data in their system," he told reporters. Wahyudi Djafar, who researches data protection for the Institute for Policy Research and Advocacy, questioned whether the penalties were strict enough to force government bodies to improve their data handling.
