OpenAI CEO Sam Altman (L) speaks with Microsoft Chief Technology Officer and Executive VP of Artificial Intelligence Kevin Scott during the Microsoft Build conference at Microsoft headquarters in Redmond, Washington, on May 21, 2024. The Federal Trade Commission and the Justice Department are set to open antitrust investigations into Microsoft , OpenAI and Nvidia , examining the powerful companies' influence on the artificial intelligence industry, a source familiar confirmed to CNBC. The FTC will take the lead on looking into Microsoft and OpenAI, while the DOJ will focus on Nvidia, and the investigations will focus on the companies' conduct, rather than mergers and acquisitions, according to the source. The news also follows the FTC's January decision to conduct an extensive study on AI industry heavyweights, including Amazon , Alphabet , Microsoft, Anthropic and OpenAI. Microsoft and OpenAI did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Read previewThe firing and rehiring of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has undone months of effort by Microsoft to avoid antitrust regulators probing its massive investment in the startup. It's tough to keep a huge business partnership like this out of what can be intense scrutiny from antitrust regulators. Nadella agreed to give Altman and Brockman their own research arm at Microsoft, if he couldn't negotiate their return to OpenAI. Another interpretation is that Microsoft is keen to show antitrust regulators that OpenAI is an independent company, and not controlled by the software giant. When Microsoft CTO Kevin Scott said the company would hire hundreds of OpenAI employees and match their current compensation, some Microsoft workers were furious. For existing Microsoft workers, 2023 was a year in which they feared for their jobs and their pay. In an open letter, nearly all of OpenAI's workforce said "Microsoft has assured us that there are positions for all OpenAI employees." Scott confirmed the offer in a post on X, writing that all OpenAI employees had "a role at Microsoft" and that the software giant would match their OpenAI compensation. However, the damage to morale among some Microsoft employees has already been done.

The ousted leader of ChatGPT-maker OpenAI is returning to the company that fired him late last week, the latest in a saga that has shocked the artificial intelligence industry. San Francisco-based OpenAI said in a statement late Tuesday: “We have reached an agreement in principle for Sam Altman to return to OpenAI as CEO with a new initial board" made of former Salesforce co-CEO Bret Taylor, former U.S. Treasury Secretary Larry Summers and Quora CEO Adam D’Angelo. That emboldened a threatened exodus of nearly all of the startup's 770 employees who signed a letter calling for the board's resignation and Altman's return. “We are encouraged by the changes to the OpenAI board,” Nadella posted on X late Tuesday. Microsoft CTO Kevin Scott on Tuesday offered to match compensation for the hundreds of employees at OpenAI who are threatening to resign following Sam Altman's sudden ouster as CEO. "Know that if needed, you have a role at Microsoft that matches your compensation and advances our collective mission." But, the comment gives some clarity to what Microsoft is willing to pay employees and how many it would hire. Early Monday morning, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said that Altman, Greg Brockman, who resigned as OpenAI's president, and their colleagues would join Microsoft as part of a new AI research group. More than 600 OpenAI employees then signed a letter to the company's board and threatened to join their former boss at Microsoft unless the members resigned.

Both projects were considered part of Microsoft's "industrial metaverse." Microsoft kept Project Airsim around because it believed there were large prospective customers for the product, the person said. Shares of AMD rose almost 5% Thursday, a day after Microsoft's technology chief said the chipmaker is bolstering its position in artificial intelligence, where Nvidia dominates. For years, Microsoft has offered some AMD GPUs to its Azure cloud customers, in addition to powering some of its computers and its Xbox consoles with AMD chips. In May, AMD said Microsoft had started offering a cloud networking service to clients, drawing on the chipmaker's Pensando products. Bloomberg reported in May that AMD was working with Microsoft on a custom AI chip, but Scott declined to say if that's actually happening. "Demand was far exceeding the supply of GPU capacity that the whole ecosystem could produce," Scott told the Verge's Nilay Patel. Microsoft, like Google and other tech companies, has been quickly adding generative AI to its own products and selling the technology's capabilities to clients. Training and deploying the underlying AI models has mainly relied on Nvidia's GPUs, creating scarcity of supply. Nvidia expects to increase supply each quarter through next year, finance chief Colette Kress told analysts on last month's earnings call. CNN —Bill Gates sounds less worried than some other executives in Silicon Valley about the risks of artificial intelligence. In a blog post on Tuesday, the Microsoft co-founder outlined some of the biggest areas of concern with artificial intelligence, including the potential for spreading misinformation and displacing jobs. But he stressed that these risks are “manageable.”“This is not the first time a major innovation has introduced new threats that had to be controlled,” Gates wrote. In a blog post earlier this year, Gates wrote: “Could a machine decide that humans are a threat, conclude that its interests are different from ours, or simply stop caring about us? “It reminds me of the time when electronic calculators became widespread in the 1970s and 1980s,” Gates wrote.
