That’s precisely what Sifan Hassan did in the London Marathon on Sunday, though her stunning, chaotic victory in the women’s race was anything but straightforward. Rather than making a long-term commitment to the marathon, Hassan thought she would test herself over the longer distance and still race on the track this summer. “I was telling myself that I’m stupid that I decided to run the marathon,” said Hassan. Prior to that, she broke the 23-year-old mile world record at the start of 2019 and won 1,500 and 10,000-meter golds at the world championships a few months later.
