Biden to attend ASEAN summit Trump skipped after 2017

The U.S. embassy in Brunei told Reuters Biden will lead the U.S. delegation for the ASEAN-United States summit, part of a series of ASEAN leaders' meetings this week. The United States has not joined the meetings at the presidential level since Biden's predecessor, Donald Trump, attended an ASEAN-U.S. meeting in Manila in 2017. Analysts say Biden's meeting with the 10-nation bloc reflects his administration's efforts to engage allies and partners in a collective effort to push back against China. U.S. officials, however, have not made specific mention of China in the run-up to the meeting as they work to set up a virtual summit between Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping later this year. They expect Biden to focus on collaboration on Covid-19 vaccine distribution, climate, supply chains and infrastructure.

Kena Betancur/Pool via REUTERS/File PhotoBAMAKO, Oct 21 (Reuters) - The Malian government on Thursday said it had not officially asked any organisation to negotiate with Islamist insurgents on its behalf. This week, a spokesperson for the ministry of religious affairs said it had asked the High Islamic Council (HCI) to open peace talks with leaders of al Qaeda's local affiliate in an effort to end a decade of conflict. read more"The Government informs the national and international public that to date, no national or international organisation has been officially mandated to carry out such an activity," the government said in a statement. Malian authorities have endorsed the idea of talks and have quietly backed local peace initiatives with the militants as security deteriorates and Islamist groups expand beyond their traditional strongholds. French President Emmanuel Macron said in June that his troops would not conduct joint operations with countries that negotiate with Islamist militants.

Kena Betancur/Pool via REUTERSISLAMABAD, Oct 21 (Reuters) - Pakistan's Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi arrived in Kabul on Thursday for his first visit to the Afghan capital since the Taliban victory in August, following weeks of tension over transport links between the two neighbouring countries. Qureshi will focus in his talks with Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi and other Taliban leaders "on ways and means to deepen cooperation in diverse areas", Pakistan's foreign ministry said in a statement. In addition, Pakistan International Airlines, the only international airline that had been operating regularly in Kabul, last week suspended flights, complaining of interference and harassment of its staff by Taliban officials. read more"The Foreign Minister's visit reflects Pakistan's consistent policy of supporting the brotherly Afghan people, deepening bilateral trade and economic relations, and facilitating closer people-to-people contacts," the ministry statement said.

Kena Betancur/Pool via REUTERS/File PhotoRIO DE JANEIRO, Oct 19 (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke with Brazilian counterpart Carlos Franca to discuss "unprecedented" regional migration and ways to collaborate to slow the number of migrants heading north, the State Department said on Tuesday. Mexico is slated to impose visa requirements for Brazilian visitors, according to a document from Mexico's Interior Ministry. Mexico has not required visas for Brazilians since 2004, giving migrants an easier path to enter the country and proceed north. Reuters reported last week that Washington has, since July, asked Mexico to impose visa requirements on Brazilians. Last month, Reuters reported that the International Organization for Migration (IOM) had asked Brazil to receive some Haitian migrants camped along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Kena Betancur/Pool via REUTERS/File PhotoDAKAR, Sept 27 (Reuters) - Mali could push back presidential and legislative elections from late February to avoid their validity being contested, its prime minister handling a post-coup transition said. But in an interview with Radio France International and France24 on Sunday, Mali's interim prime minister, Choguel Maiga, said that date could be postponed by "two weeks, two months, a few months." "The main thing for us is less to stick to Feb. 27 than to hold elections that will not be contested." Last month the bloc said it would impose sanctions, including asset freezes, on anyone holding up preparations for Mali's elections.

U.S., Pakistan face each other again on Afghanistan threats
  + stars: | 2021-09-25 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +5 min
Kena Betancur | AFP | Getty ImagesThe Taliban's takeover of Kabul has deepened the mutual distrust between the U.S. and Pakistan, two putative allies who have tangled over Afghanistan. With the Biden administration looking for new ways to stop terrorist threats in Afghanistan, it will likely look again to Pakistan, which remains critical to U.S. intelligence and national security because of its proximity to Afghanistan and connections to the Taliban leaders now in charge. But the U.S. wants Pakistani cooperation in counterterrorism efforts and could seek permission to fly surveillance flights into Afghanistan or other intelligence cooperation. The previous Afghan government, which was strongly backed by New Delhi, routinely accused Pakistan of harboring the Taliban. And Central Asian countries north of Afghanistan all face varying degrees of Russian influence.

President Biden called for an era of international cooperation in tackling global threats in his first address to the United Nations General Assembly as president. “Our security, our prosperity and our very freedoms are interconnected, in my view as never before,” Mr. Biden said. The event is a major test of credibility for Mr. Biden, who was among the first to address the 193-member General Assembly. Many officials who had welcomed the election of President Biden — and his pledge that “America is back” — are now expressing concerns.

1 Transform 500 ETF (VOTE) begins trading Wednesday. It is attracting outsized attention because it is the intersection between three hot investing themes: ETFs, ESG (environmental, social and governance), and activist investing. It is unlike most ETF funds, which usually seek to buy or exclude companies that meet their investment criteria. Here's what's different: VOTE is not trying to own companies that share its beliefs or exclude companies that do not. The shares that the company owns through the ETF will be used to vote in favor of climate change and other ESG proposals.

The executives discussed the possibility of Apple being the exclusive provider of the offer, giving Apple device users the ability to purchase the Time Warner bundle through the iTunes store. And Apple already offered media content -- movies and TV shows -- from a large number of media companies through the iTunes store. Time Warner wanted Apple to market the bundle globally, but Apple was hesitant to irritate its other media partners. A year later, in late 2016, Bewkes agreed to sell Time Warner to AT&T for more than $105 billion including debt.

US cannabis companies are racing to build up their supply chains, footprints, and branding in order to woo strategic partners who are already looking for deals in the industry, Nicholas Vita, the CEO of New York-based cannabis company Columbia Care told Insider in an interview. So far, alcohol and tobacco companies have focused their attention on Canadian cannabis companies, where cannabis is federally legal. That footprint could make Columbia Care an attractive target for investment and partnership from a major consumer company, Vita said. Florida cannabis company Trulieve is buying MSO Harvest Health & Recreation in a deal that values the target at $2.1 billion. "Ultimately you get capped out in the marketplace because you can only do so much in each individual market," Vita said.

TFI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said that, based on an industry survey, he believes the foldable iPhone will reach 15 to 20 million units in 2023. That means it might work like iPhone that can open up to a tablet with a screen slightly larger than the 7.9-inch display on an iPad mini. The foldable model is now a "must-have" for major smartphone brands, according to Kuo. "After 5G, the foldable smartphone is the next innovative selling point of high-end models," he wrote.

JPMorgan has become the first bank to say it wants US staff to return to the office. Even at the height of Britain's first national lockdown last year, Goldman Sachs had at least 200 of its 6,500 London staff in the office. In a statement, shared with Insider, UK Country Officer James Bardrick emphasized returning to the office remained "voluntary." None of the banks approached by Insider had plans to require their London staff to return to the office. A JPMorgan spokesperson would not comment on any plans for UK staff to return to work.
