GameStop stock is still the fascination of day traders, even after many saw big losses in 2021. The allure of striking it rich on the meme stock is too great to ignore, traders told BI. Business Insider spoke with retail traders, who asked to use only their first name for privacy, about how past losses are impacting their decision to go long GameStop again. Still, he couldn't help himself from scooping up more GameStop shares when the stock rocketed higher this year. Traders work at the post where GameStop is traded on the floor at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York City, U.S., June 12, 2024. GameStop's annual shareholder meeting was disrupted by computer problems Thursday, as servers crashed under overwhelming interest in the stream, a customer service representative for the company hosting the stream told CNBC. According to a YouTube stream from an unaffiliated user purporting to reproduce the feed, the annual meeting was brought to order at 11:48 a.m. The rep said Computer Share's servers appeared to be unable to handle the amount of traffic the meeting had received and weren't accustomed to the volume of accounts. They added that Computer Share's tech team was working to solve the issue and advised interested parties to attempt to log in "every 5 to 10 minutes."

New York CNN —YOLO economy, meet the “yo, no” economy. In what was dubbed the YOLO economy (short for “you only live once”), or revenge spending, consumers shelled out for the experiences and goods they had missed. And that may be bad news for the economy. “We are monitoring the issue and engaging with market participants,” a spokesperson for the Securities and Exchange Commission told CNN. Joe Saluzzi, co-founder of Themis Trading, told CNN that the NYSE’s explanation is hard to square with the bizarre trades that hit the tape.

E-Trade is having internal discussions about whether to ban Keith Gill — the meme stock trader who just disclosed a big position in GameStop — from the trading platform over concerns regarding potential market manipulation, the Wall Street Journal reported Monday. The brokerage, owned by Morgan Stanley , hasn't reached a decision yet, the Journal said, citing people familiar with deliberations inside the firm. GameStop shares shot up early Monday after Gill, who goes by "DeepF------Value" on Reddit, posted a screenshot of what could be his portfolio holding a significant amount of GameStop common shares and call options. The meme stock mania in 2021 led to a series of congressional hearings, including testimony by Gill, around brokers' practices and gamifying retail stock trading. Gill also faced several class action lawsuits, including one alleging that he pretended to be a novice trader despite being a licensed professional.

London CNN —Shares in GameStop shot up almost 73% in pre-market trade Monday as the renewed frenzy around meme stocks shows little sign of abating. The video game retailer’s stock soared hours after a Reddit post by stocks influencer Keith Gill — also known as “Roaring Kitty” — revealed that he had bought nearly $116 million worth of the stock. The post was the first on Gill’s Reddit account in more than three years, when social media-fueled hype around GameStop (GME) shares was in full swing. Meme stocks are shares that swing wildly in value based on their popularity among trader communities on social media rather than the companies’ fundamental characteristics. He also said he did not set out to help stoke the GameStop frenzy and instead believed the stock offered an attractive opportunity for investors.
